I'm looking for bands similar to this sound, preferably the original inspirations.

And bands like Camera Obscura and The Pipettes. I guess this would be 50s era bubble-gum pop stuff? These sorts of bands, from the genre's heyday.

This would be easier if you posted the other bands you liked as well to avoid the obvious ones :) the genre that you're looking for is post-hardcore by the way.

The obvious ones: Rites of Spring, Dinosaur Jr, The Jesus Lizard, Big Black, Nation of Ulysses, Flipper, Royal Trux, maybe some riot grrl stuff like Bratmobile, Bikini Kill, etc etc etc

Three things.

1. What is some good modern funk, or funk like music? I've been listening to Prince's Lotus Flowers (which is really, really loving great, I'd place it behind some of his classic albums its so good) and Jamiroquai a lot lately. I ask for modern, because I have plenty classic funk.

2. I want some metal that is extremely fast and heavy, but not death metal and with usually clean vocals. Something like Strapping Young Lad.

3. I've also been listening to Butterfingers, and I like them and want some more Australian or UK hip hop (thats not grime)

1. Is 'classic funk' 60s-70s or also including 80s? If not, check out Herbie Hancock, Zapp, The SOS Band, Talking Heads is pretty funky too. Not a lot of pure funk around these days (Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings are good) but some fusion artists i like with funk influences are Liquid Soul, Medeski Martin & Wood, Victor Wooten, Antibalas Afrobeat Orchestra and Los Amigos Invisibles. I don't know how low your pop tolerance is but some of Amy Winehouse's backing music is pretty drat funky and fun too. Good hip hop artists that sample funk music include De La Soul, Snoop Dogg and Dr. Dre.

I am trying to find some Francophone music that is nice and kind of mellow. An example would be Carla Bruni maybe mixed with the Amelie soundtrack. Thats a bad description, but essentially something light, maybe some accordion, and a nice smooth voice or voices singing in French. I tried using lastFM to find similar artists but the results returned were all anglophone.

My purpose is two fold: Firstly, I want some nice background music that I can write papers to without distracting me because I can't understand the language. Second, I will be taking up French soon and it would be nice to have something that, when I am ready, I can start to pick out words from in a language I will be learning. Anyone have some artists I should be on the look out for?

Maybe Michel Legrand. Anyhting he did in the 60's.

Hell, go ahead and watch the musical Les parapluies de Cherbourg. Then buy the soundtrack.

Nobody outrules the Marquise de Cat!
I'm looking for recommendations for very popular music that doesn't suck too hard. I like TV on the Radio, Radiohead, Gorillaz... and on the other side of the spectrum, I like some Kylie Minogue, Lily Allen, and lots of pleasant pop music with some electronic influence that has some kind of statement at least some of the time.

Basically, I want to be able to chit chat about popular music without having to listen to a lot of total crud. I have no interest in Lady Gaga or the new Eminem album. I have a hard time figuring out what anyone other than me listens to, as I tend to listen to a lot of IDM and chiptunes and Commodore 64 music and other nerdy bullshit.

There's another, more specific request I'd like to make, and that's "hard pop". It's hard for me to describe, but it's a sort of aggressive electronic pop music that seems to be a British sort of thing. I'll make some examples of the kind of sound I'm thinking of (Youtubes included because the videos are often awesome and it's also a good way of getting the idea):

George Michael - Freek http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UrOe1Eq1N6U
Scissor Sisters - Filthy/Gorgeous http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0hzI7JHivm0&feature=fvst
Sugababes - Freak Like Me - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kGSajAGg9h4&feature=fvst (This is perhaps the purest example of the kind of sound/aesthetic I'm trying to convey)

More gritty, aggressive pop music would be nice.

Can anybody recommend me some instrumental bands? I'm a complete newbie when it comes to music without vocals. I'm looking for classical, rock, metal, orchestral, etc types of instrumental music. I've been listening to artists like The Glitch Mob, Deepset, Beast Please Be Still, Chris Joss, and a few others..for my example of variety. Some more classical with guitar/bass or drum n' bass stuff might be a nice.

I'm not necessarily looking for post-rock type stuff, but I don't mind it incorporated into instrumental tracks as long as it's not repetitive to the point of it getting annoying.

I need some music to help get my creative juices flowing and keep me concentrated. Unfortunately with bands that have vocals I end up getting distracted by them and end up humming/singing along and not focusing. Any help is greatly appreciated, sorry for such a vague request :smith:

This was a good rec for Fugazi because of the personnel overlap. You'd probably also like Ian McKaye's short lived band Embrace. You may want to look into DC hardcore, other Dischord Records bands, and early emo.

quote:

-Dinosaur Jr- sounds like generic college alt rock, but maybe i just chose a bad album (Farm)

You're Living All Over Me is their most popular album and my personal favorite, but it still doesn't have that much in common with Fugazi. Although Dino jr is "post-hardcore" in the literal sense, I don't think they really fit in with the other bands kingcobweb mentioned. They have more in common with stuff like Sonic Youth, Husker Du, Pixies, grunge, and shoegaze.

Don't forget to look into the bands that influenced Fugazi, particularly Minutemen, Mission of Burma, Gang of Four, and Television. These bands are usually classified as post-punk, but Television is in that odd space between post-punk and proto-punk, and Minutemen are pretty eclectic, mixing punk and post-punk with various other styles like funk and country. Marquee Moon and Double Nickles on the Dime are generally regarding as the best albums of their respective bands.
