A box full of expensive math notes!

Intake manifold for the 323.

Why it counts.

By comparison, this is what the non-GTR turbo intake looks like;

I'm no intake expert, but I'm assuming the GTR manifold helps route air more efficiently thus creating more POWAAAA?

From Mazda;

quote:

Manifold System

With the "Big Turbo", it has become critical that boosted air is distributed to the individual cylinders in equal volume and pressure. Likewise, the energy of exhaust gas must be fully exploited to quickly "spin-up" the big turbine in order to obtain high power and minimum turbo lag.

The Mazda engine design team has perfected a unique manifold system, combining the air volume and pressure equalizing intake and exhaust extractor manifolds.

It was Mazda's finding that with more a more commonly used equal-length intake manifold, the tract nearest to the air entry received the least volume/pressure, and the farthest tract the most. By trial, measurement and testing, the engine team perfected a cast aluminium manifold that has intricately curved and sized "walls" between the individual tracts leading to the intake ports to equalize air volume and pressure. A bonus is that the manifold's swirl generating effect contribute to efficient combustion. The equalizer intake manifolds have shown its effectiveness in improving torque from idling to the Group-A 300-bhp-plus output level and all the way up to maximum revs.

The exhaust manifold has individual tracts collecting at the turbocharger entry. These tracts are in two groups; the tracts from cylinders 1 and 4 are routed to the center, and those from cylinders 2 and 3 to the outside. This routing allows nearly equal tract length. The complex manifold is made of cast ferrite steel, for which the lost-foam casting method is employed. Not only is this about 20 percent lighter, much stronger and its passages much smoother than a conventional cast iron one, but also its surface finish is much smoother.

The exhaust manifold's extracting ability precludes an unwanted rise in exhaust back-pressure, which would cause the dilution of the combustion chambers with exhaust gas. This would, in turn, raise cylinder temperatures. Enriching the fuel/air mixture to lower combustion temperatures would obviously deteriorate fuel economy.

Both apply since I now will have the GTR intake and exhaust manifolds. OEM performance.

So are you going to port and/or polish the GTR intake?

I'd be a litle worried about loving it up myself, but you seem to have the skill down pretty decent.

Probably not. Clean the exterior, repaint a factory silver. Just got to clean the ever living poo poo out of the caked on oil residue in the chamber section.

I froze my rear end off last winter turning wrenches - doubt this year will be much different. If I can somehow manage to finish the ceiling sometime soon, then a garage heater will be in the cards.

If not, then it'd be pissing away money. I'll probably use my oxygen stealing propane heater this year.

What about a cheap used wood stove off craigslist or something?.....When I was in NY working on my Cherokees it was cold as poo poo but the stove kept it warm enough to where I didn't have to wear gloves or bulky poo poo. It just takes awhile to get going depending on the size of the stove. If you get a big stove you'll be sweating your rear end off.

They're infrared heaters. They work absolutely beautifully and come in pretty much unlimited sizes/shapes.

Very little electricity, mostly natural gas. There is an electric exhaust fan but its not very large. I only have estimates on its efficiency based on the bills from the previous owner. He used the garage as his home carpentry business and had it heated all winter. The gas bills were pretty reasonable.

I've only used it a few times since I moved in. The way it delivers heat is kind of neat. You turn it on and it roars away for about 30 seconds, and you're staring at it wondering when its going to work when suddenly you're hot all over.

That's what she said :rimshot:

As awesome as that'd be, my property is COMPLETELY paved between the house and garage. Running natural gas out there would be a bitch.

Although, we do have a natural gas BBQ outside with a connection there...

There is also this one at Canadian Tire for $300 that is electric:
http://www.canadiantire.ca/AST/brow...2Bsq.%2Bft..jsp

Someone in the Q&A section worked out the power consumption at around $0.75 / Hour to run it. The gas is probably cheaper and quicker than that one but hey, no running a gas line.

I wondered about that too but I think its a mistake. The power requirements are 240V / 5000W on a 20A breaker. It would be some kind of hosed up dual type heater to use that much electricity and require natural gas as well.

Also for a cheaper option my father-in-law has this POWERFIST heater in his garage:
http://www.princessauto.com/farm/heating/electric-heaters/8277675-4800-watt-construction-heater-with-enclosed-motor?keyword=heater

Its not bad but you do need to turn it on about 20 minutes before you want to use the garage in the coldest winter months.

Oh poo poo, I have one of these in the basement somewhere. But I'll have to get a 240v circuit set up in the garage :(

I always use carby cleaner some gloves and a rag to flush out a dirty intake manifold. Seems to do the trick.

Also I'm pretty sure we used to have POWER FIST! in Australia but I'm not sure who would carry them anymore - our local everything store SupaCheap mostly sells their own branded stuff these days. Possibly AutoPro or something. That engine crane is noice tho. Want.

I'm sure its true, but how often does this happen? Tell me Sockington! Have you done this? CONFESS! Although you are in canada, so you only sweat at work, and what, 4 weeks out of the year at home in the garage?

What is the cheapest place to get POR products these days. I've seen it for "less" but after shipping it comes out to about the same as por15.com.

I'm going to be prepping the jeep this winter...

I was working under them yesterday in a big hangar and I had to turn them off.

When it rains, it pours.

On the way to work today, I had to leave the end of the street which was just getting some finishing gravel before getting paved. I had to hop up from the gravel onto the asphalt (about 2.5") to get on my way. That small amount of extra pressure was enough to kill the passenger side motor mount. It drives/runs great, but the second you put in reverse at idle with your foot on the brake, it thumps like a fucker.

Anywho, priced out three new motor mounts - because the other two are probably half shagged anyways - with the total ringing in at $169.37 for brand new Ford mounts (the aftermarket ones have mixed success).

Oh well, I'll just keep putting off the 323 for another bit longer. :smith:

Haaaaaaaaay Sock. It's come to my attention that the '01 Escort ZX2 is apparently compatible with a lot of the stuff you're doing to your 323. My sister's ZX2 has recently been megafucked by a Tennessee shade tree mechanic. She's joining the AF next week, and won't be needing her car for a while. I was thinking of trailering it up here, unfucking 100,000 miles of no-maintenance, and replacing the broken bits with PERFORMANCE! bits.

Any thoughts on where I should definitely hit? Apparently tokiko made special shocks and springs for the S/R version, and all the BG sway bars fit. Other than that, I don't know.
