I'm having trouble hunting down a artist like Enya but darker, Enya is all well and good but most of her stuff is too upbeat for my tastes, I've tried Gregorian, Enigman, Era and alike but their habit of underlaying a godawful drummachine beat is a massive turn off.

Where will I turn for my dark Gregorian ambient mix?

Eva Cassidy had a beautiful voice.

Or do you mean stuff more like Regina Spektor and Norah Jones? If so I'm not sure it's "bluesy" that is the most apt adjective.

You could try some jazz vocalists as well and see if that's more what you mean. Lena Horne and Billy Holiday are pretty universal starting places.

As said above, those 3 are fantastic (particularly Regina Spektor:swoon:). Katie Melua is great as well. If you want to go more towards Jazz, you can check out Madeleine Peyroux or the like.

Some of these suggestions are good voice wise, but the music doesn't seem as aggressive as Fiona, something I like, you feel like in all her songs she could break out into full rock and roll at any time. Less nice girls and more bad girls :)

Eleni Mandell has a great voice and she often writes in character as a "bad girl":
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y6wSVWkfv8w

I'd strongly recommend her first two albums "Wishbone" and "Thrill." After that point, she experimented with country and other styles, but those early records are filled with throaty torch-song bluesiness and seductive/unstable femme-fatale protagonists.

Have you tried much PJ Harvey? Pretty bluesy at times, definitely very aggressive. "To Bring You My Love" is a good starting point, here a few tracks from it:

That was fantastic.

She's really, really good live. She played at my college a few years ago, just her and a guitar and it was incredible. Only about 40 people in the theater, too.

I've been searching for a band that sounds similar to Finntroll's Visor Om Slutet album. I have tried various neofolk bands and the like since that's what seems would be similar (yes Finntroll is a black/folk metal band, but the album is a bit of a departure from that), but I haven't really found anything that amazing. Here are some links to some tracks from the album in question.

What's some music similar to Swell and Modest Mouse?

Lately I've been listening to a lot of Swell - 41 and Modest Mouse - The Lonesome Crowded West, but usually stick to hip hop/electronic so I'm not sure where to explore this genre (I know they aren't the same genre, but the albums above have a similar to style imo)

For Modest Mouse, try mewithoutyou (ignore the lovely emo name, they are fantastic). Any album by them is a pretty good bet, but Brother Sister is my favourite.

Surely you're thinking of someone else, these guys are from Pittsburgh, safe to say they didn't do giallo soundtracks in the 70's.

Also as for another thing to check out, try out Umberto, they have a tape out on Sonic Meditations at the moment.

I guess the obvious answers would be Fripp & Eno or Sonic Youth, but what you may be looking for is jazz-influenced guitar work in general. Sonny Sharrock's Ask the Ages is an all around great guitar album if you're looking for something different.

If you want something that's both aggressive and melodic, try noise pop.

Since you mentioned NIN, A Place to Bury Strangers used to open for them and they also have a new album out. There's also one of their biggest influences, The Jesus and Mary Chain, whose first album Psychocandy is generally regarded as their best. There's also the closely related, sometimes overlapping genre of shoegaze. My Bloody Valentine's Loveless is more or less the definitive shoegaze album, so it's the best place to start if you haven't heard it already.

For more "noisy" shoegaze, Loveless is held as the pinnacle, but I'll throw in that Slowdive's "Souvlaki" is THE shoegazer album to measure all others against, so if he hasn't heard that, get on it :)

Compositionally Zombi's more like classic kraut/space/prog like Hawkwind, Ash Ra Tempel, Amon Duul II, Eloy, and Captain Beyond but for more synthy stuff you might try Morgan Geist, Quiet Village, and Lindstrom & Prins Thomas. That '70s horror' sound, if I'm thinking of the same stuff you are like Italian movies, has a characteristic 'disco-ish' element to it, which is experiencing a big revival lately even if there aren't many bands besides Zombi who combine disco and prog directly. These are a little more off the wall but maybe also give Here We Go Magic, Yeasayer, and Maserati a try...

My dad likes people like Charles Aznavour, Andrea Bocelli, and Janita, and I'm trying to find a DVD of a concert that he'd like. Not from those guys, though, he already has those. It should be something lively, and something you could drink wine with. He likes upbeat and easy listening music, and not something heavy or chaotic. I haven't had the best luck trying to match his musical tastes in the past, but hopefully you guys can recommend something.

I'm a long time (10 year+) fan of heavy metal. My latest favorites are:

Gorod, Augury, Obscura, The Faceless, Cobalt, Agalloch, Alcest

Recently I discovered Protest the Hero's Fortress album and really enjoyed it.

I tend to read teethofthedivine.com for reviews. I find new bands by looking at what other people have bought on amazon and on itunes or looking for other things on similar labels.

I generally prefer European style vocals over the American style, although this is changing as I get more exposure to the recent up and coming American metal bands. There was a period where I didn't listen to much American metal because it didn't excite me.

Given the bands above, can anyone recommend a couple other bands that I might enjoy?

I've been in a complete musical dead end for like 7 loving years. I just don't have any connection to anything that seems to be remotely popular or easy to find these days, and I'm sick to death of all the old poo poo. The last group that had more than a song or two I really enjoyed was The Black Keys. Oh, and The White Stripes.

The Phantom Band released Checkmate Savage a while back and they had two songs I enjoyed. The Howling and The Island. I like most all of Johnny Cash's poo poo he recorded from 1995 and up, not just Hurt. I found a song by the Drive By Truckers "Goddamn Lonely Love" but when I looked up the rest of their stuff I was left cold. A lot of the opinions they expressed ( or at least seemed to)just really clashed with my views. Especially "Puttin People on the Moon." Jesus, I wanted to vomit listening to that.

Now I'll just list random poo poo I've enjoyed.

Everclears first Album, a smattering of individual songs past that.

The Mother Hips, most of Kiss the Crystal Flake. Except "Time Sick Son of a Grizzly Bear".

I have Van Morrisons entire discography but usually only put on Moondance.

The track "New Moon Rising" of the new Wolfmother cd.

I guess I might need to come to terms with the fact that, maybe, nothing is being made anymore that I would like.

Well, it's hard when we don't know exactly what you like about the songs that you listed and I can't readily identify one thing that those songs all have in common.

R.E.M. is a crowd-pleaser, as well as the Arcade Fire, but again, you may despise these, because I don't know what you're looking for.
