I do not, as a rule, appear in photographs. It's one of the advantages of being the family photographer. However, I have taken one self-snapshot.

I don't usually take portraits, including self-portraits... but I do have one that I like. It was taken handheld into a hotel bathroom mirror because I liked the lighting, and I just had my haircut so it didn't look horrible like it usually does. My shoulders are so uneven because I'm holding the camera, but other than that, I like it.

And since the OP says we're not focusing on the glamor of self portraits... here's a shot I took testing out a photo booth I set up for Halloween this year.

My costume is 'tacky tourist'

I heard one photographer on a podcast say that you have to be comfortable in front of the camera yourself and that any apprehension you have to being photographed projects that same feeling onto your subjects. Once I became comfortable with being photographed, taking pictures of other people got a lot easier.
