Starting this today. I've heard enough about it and I know the recommendation thread is all abuzz so I thought I'd post a question. I just finished the first episode, and I was wondering if all the people we're introduced to (names appearing on the screen) become focuses of episodes at some point or does the show have a tendancy to highlight names of people we never really see that much of?

I wouldn't say they get episodes, but anybody with a name is pointed out for many reasons. You'll get familiar with the major players after a while, but even the ones with bit roles are usually involved in something big and get referenced later on.

The show isn't really structured to be like Lost or something where there is a character centric episode, but everyone from the pilot gets thoroughly fleshed out, with the exception of some no name officers on both sides command staff.

Don't forget to watch the pilot movie (this is why I think we need a new thread, to serve at least as a primer for this).

I've gotten ahold of (I think) everything LoGH, but assumed I should just start with the series. And yeah, I would really like a new thread-- I tried reading from the start of this one, but since it was began when 40 or so episodes were subbed, I quickly bailed. Normally I don't mind spoilers, but for something so big and with such a great reputation, I'd like to go in unsullied.

The pilot movie (the actual very first LOGH story to ever be animated; that is, it predates the main series) is called "My Conquest is the Sea of Stars." Most people here watched it after the main series because that's when it was fansubbed, but it probably should be watched first. Zorak and I are at work putting together a new OP for this thread, at least. Hopefully people will be able to read that and get started a bit more easily.

Thank you very much. I heard it Sea of Stars described as a prequal on the site I got it from, which made me think I should watch it after the series. If you're putting together a new op, a link to a post on this page or some later point with "from this point on the thread is spoiler-proofed for newbs" would be great for those who'd like to get in on some discussion but would like to skip the earlier, spoiler-fraught talk. I'm capable of keeping my mouse away from the black boxes, but I'm under the impression that there's stuff earlier in this thread that isn't blacked out that really I don't want to see. It's funny, I'm normally totally indifferent to whether I'm spoiled or not, even on long series, but LoGH sounds so perfectly up my alley and I so rarely have a chance to go into a show completely virgin that I'm finding myself being really paranoid. Ooh, the new OP is nice, good job Nate and Zorak. Incidentally, does anyone know if the original LoGH novels have a decent translation? I've heard the anime is a pretty close adaptation, but still I'd enjoy reading through the original. e: Somewhat unrelated, but apparently LoGH has a wiki now. I guess it was started by some 4chan people or something, but it probably be a good idea to contribute all the same. Miles Vorkosigan fucked around with this message at 05:45 on Jun 15, 2010 |

Incidentally, the Haikasoru publishing, who specialize in English translations of Japanese sci-fi for a youth market have already worked with Yoshiki Tanaka, the author of LoGH and apparently blogged about all the requests they were recieving by email. Here's the thread. And next 4 episodes of the Gaiden, entitled Retriever, are scheduled for a Thursday release!

Hey Zorak I uploaded every single LOGH episode to megaupload a while back for people who couldn't get LOGH because they were at Uni or couldn't use torrents for whatever reason. Should I post them here?

Sweet, only two eps of content left before we have everything LoGH. Also for the new OP, the first four prequels are titled, unless you were really trying to match CA's naming. 1 Valley of White Silver #1-4 (1-4) 2 Morning's Dream, Night's Song #1-4 (5-8) 3 Disgrace #1-4 (9-12) 4 A Hundred Billion Stars, A Hundred Billion Lights #1-12 (13-24) And you aren't listing the episodes of the 9th prequel, The Third Tiamat Battle, unless you're only listing things that are available from CA right now. And yes all my video files must be named just so or else

Seeing as how it's summer and I have plenty of free time, I started LoGH yesterday and finished the second movie a few minutes ago. It's a great show so far and I deeply admire the premise and tone. The music really goes a long way to giving the space battles a feeling of grandeur, and I can appreciate the slow pace of the show (though there were times when I would skip 3 or 4 seconds ahead just to get to the next line of dialogue). If there's any complaint I could have, it's that the space ships seem to explode a little too easily from laser fire and simple hull piercings...But how could I complain about that? Explosions make any battle better! So I have no complaints. I'll be starting with Episode 3 now. I'm excited! Thank you for convincing me to watch this show ADTRW.

I figure this is a good place for this post. Last month a group called Bluefixer subbed Nana Toshi Monogatari (Seven Cities Story) an OVA based on Tanaka Yoshiki's novel series of the same name. The set up goes; in the future the earth's axis tilts killing everyone. The colonialists on the moon repopulate the planet and organize a government around seven cities. Everyone on the moon dies from a virus but not before implementing the Olympos-System and set it on auto, a system of laser satellites that will shoot down anything that goes too high in the air. It's apparently good for the next 150 years or so. You follow, and stop me if you've heard this one before, two genus strategists on opposing sides of a war between two of the cities who win by using daring tactics and are not well liked among their superiors. Directed by Mamoru Kanbe(Elfen Lied). If you've got an hour to kill and you like naval warfare and sci-fi go for it it's good. The only problem is there are five novels and the OVA only covers the first. Nana Toshi Monogatari at BakaBT Guyver fucked around with this message at 17:19 on Jul 2, 2010 |

I guess there is no way to know if or when The Third Tiamat Battle two episodes are subbed or not, then, with scarywater down... I've been searching the internet for a while trying to find them. Either my googlefu is quite weak, or they weren't subbed/no one else has them to download

You can still search tokyotosho.info I think. Like many other groups, you can find the recent stuff on nyaatorrents now. Some DVD episodes by CA recently got posted there so it looks like they've migrated over officially. Anyway since it doesn't appear there, it likely hasn't been subbed yet.

I've always wanted to check this out, but I don't want to get halfway through and run out of episodes to watch because I can't understand them anymore. Is it still being translated? And pretty much every link in the OP runs into a 404 error.

All of the main arc is translated. Unfortunately the old torrent tracker died so you'll have to find the episodes elsewhere.

Hope it's alright to bump threads like this in here. I followed a link to this thread from (I think) the youtube thread over in GBS, and boy did you guys ever sell me on this poo poo. I've been through the two movies and the first 13 episodes and man am I hooked. You just don't get this combination of intrigue and strategy in any other show, it's pretty much the epitome of Space Opera. poo poo, the characters themselves even watch opera in one episode. I just love the empire/alliance dynamics and all the political bullshit. The space battles themselves are pretty abstract, really, but all the strategizing before and during battles make them work on a level other sci fi shows are sorely lacking, even though the actual numbers get a bit silly sometimes (ep13: 30 million men in one attack what the gently caress. God I love Lohengram's counter though.). So thanks, I guess!

It's more than welcome to bump the thread, and the thread has survived well longer than one would normally expect thanks to random folks stumbling upon it every now then. Glad you seem to be liking it. It also made me notice that, predictably, the direct download link are down. We could put up a link to the main page but, eh, gently caress that site anyway. I haven't checked in a while but have there been any DVD versions past episode 38?
