Sorry for side tracking, but isn't "upcoming engagement" almost an oxymoron? Engagement is a promise of marriage, so as soon as two people have agreed to get married they are engaged, so it can't be upcoming any longer.

But yeah, anyone that would use that word is probably implying "I'll be engaged just as soon as the low-life can afford the $10,000 ring I demand." poo poo if I were a woman and someone gave me a useless rock that cost 10 Gs I would cut them with it.

...or it means he was telling his dad he was planning to ask and just hadn't popped the question yet. Or that he and the future spouse agreed to wait until graduation/employment/loans paid off/whatever like countless other couples do. Let's keep the misogyny in check, drat. My dad's been sending me a lot of subtle "well the oil spill is Obama's fault because if Bush were in office you'd be blaming it on him " bullshit. And this afternoon at my mom's birthday lunch he made a big deal about the Arizona immigration bill and how I was wrong about it stating that officers are now legally obligated to stop and identify anyone who they have reasonable suspicion of being illegal (he said it's like curfew law for kids under 18 and you have to get stopped doing something illegal first). I'm more sad about it than anything else. I don't want my parents to be right-wing batshit Fox drones.

Lordy, I don't even know where to begin with this. Here at first you think it's about gasoline and then well... Ship 'em to Afghanistan!! It feels like someone watched Starship Troopers and found out later that evening that their daughter started dating a mexican boy.

I wouldn't argue with a tour of military service in exchange for citizenship. If anything, it would train and educate many people looking to come into this country. We're not talking about just infantry either. Doctors, engineers, radio operators, etc. However, that last bit about "SEND 'EM THERE ANYWAY WITH NO AMMO! HURR" just shows the real malice and hatred within the e-mail.

It would be interesting also to see the reactions of conservatives. What happens when you take an illegal immigrant, arguably one of the most hated and despised person in a conservative's mind, and change them into a U.S. Soldier, the most beloved and revered person in a conservative's mind? How do they reconcile that?

Those sorts of soldiers don't exist as far as they're concerned. Blue-eyed blond Aryans tend to be all they will acknowledge as real soldiers fighting for Mom, apple pie, and baconators. The ability to ignore completely inconvenient facts in preference to fantasy is a highly desired and greatly valued skill among modern conservatives.

I can't see where or why this should happen, but as the saying says, "poo poo HAPPENS" I surely hope I don't see this in my lifetime and just hopefully not in anyones lifetime that follows me..... Let's say I break into your house. . . A lady wrote the best letter in the Editorials in ages!!! It explains things better than all the baloney you hear on TV. Her point: Recently, large demonstrations have taken place across the country, protesting the fact that Congress is finally addressing the issue of illegal immigration. Certain people are angry that the U.S. might protect its own borders, might make it harder to sneak into this country and, once here, to stay indefinitely. Let me see if I correctly understand the thinking behind these protests. Let's say I break into your house. Let's say that when you discover me in your house, you insist that I leave. But I say, "I've made all the beds and washed the dishes and did the laundry and swept the floors. I've done all the things you don't like to do. I'm hard-working and honest (except for when I broke into your house). According to the protesters: You are Required to let me stay in your house. You are Required to add me to your family's insurance plan. You are Required to Educate my kids. You are Required to Provide other benefits to me & to my family (my husband will do all of your yard work because he is also hard-working and honest, except for that breaking in part). If you try to call the police or force me out, I will call my friends who will picket your house carrying signs that proclaim my RIGHT to be there. It's only fair, after all, because you have a nicer house than I do, and I'm just trying to better myself. I'm a hard-working and honest, person, except for well, you know, I did break into your house. And oh yeah, I get a free education, where you have to pay your own way through college.(TEEHEE) And what a deal it is for me!!! I live in your house, contributing only a fraction of the cost of my keep, and there is nothing you can do about it without being accused of cold, uncaring, selfish, prejudiced, and bigoted behavior. Oh yeah, I DEMAND that you learn MY LANGUAGE!!! So you can communicate with me. And don't forget to make sure your forms are in MY language - I need to understand them... Why can't people see how ridiculous this is?! Only in America ! If you agree, pass it on ( in English ). Share it if you see the value of it. If not blow it off......... Along with your future Social Security funds, and a lot of other things! ---- It came with a whole bunch of pictures of the frito bandito and speedy gonzalez.

RagnarokAngel posted:I love how conservatives don't get theres a huge difference between "don't kick out illegal immigrants" and "it's racist to make every vaguely tannish person show ID" This is a core component of a conservative mind, I think. You see it everywhere. Say something sympathetic to Palestinians? You're "defending terrorism." Because some Palestinians are terrorists, I guess, that means saying anything the least bit nice about them means that you love everything that every one of them does! Think that America should realize it's just one country in a large world and that yes, we actually should consider the opinions of other nations sometimes? Why do you want America to SURRENDER ITS SOVEREIGNTY? My personal favorite: How can you favor reducing our CO2 emissions and usage of fossil fuels while being pro-choice? They don't seem to understand anything except pure black and white.
