Im Blind.
My experience: 1 year as Network Administrator for health clinic (current position). 1 year sales/support computers and networks. 3 years of experience in Help Desk support, ranging from PC/Printer/small network issues, 700+ users. I am getting my Bachelors in Business: Info. Systems in November this year. Also, I have my A+, Net+, Sec+, and CCENT. I plan to complete my CCNA in the next few months and move onto working on the MCSE, even though it is discontinued.. the information is still very relevant.

What I'm looking for: I am looking to get into Network Engineering. So, any position that will grant a gateway into this position would be preferable. Systems Analyst, Junior Network Engineer, or Network Administration.

What I'm NOT looking for: Help Desk. What bothers me the most is positions called 'Network Technician' and all they become are positions with Netgear retail switches in a small office of 25 people.

Where I live: San Antonio, TX

Where I'm looking: San Antonio or Austin <-- I have noticed quite a few Austin jobs and I would be willing to relocate very quickly.

When I can start: 2-3 weeks. I am the sole person responsible for the IT system here at my 100 user base clinic. It is pretty important I find a replacement, also I do not like to just leave places.

Requirements: Benefits: health, vision, dental. I currently work and go to school so until this coming November, the place I work at is fine but if I was offered something today that would be a direct movement towards becoming a Network Engineer I would be very interested. Pay is not a concern if I can get experience being a Junior Network Engineer or Systems Analyst or working with a very large network as a Network Administrator.

Responsibilities: Phone and E-mail tech support, some HTML editing for Wi-Fi portal pages, some testing and QA.

This is a small company, so you will have a few different responsibilities, but phone support is the highest priority. You will be taking over my position, and I'm on the phone maybe about an hour a day. The rest of the time I'm doing e-mail support, reproducing bugs and repairing some RMA equipment. My experience: Several college classes spanning VB programming, Linux/UNIX, foundations of information security, and a CCNA class. Several years of being "the computer guy" in my family, and to some friends. Did some volunteer "computer janiteering" in high school, cleaning other students' PCs of crap. I also like teaching people how to operate their computer safely.

What I'm looking for: I'm looking to get into the IT field and out of the Food and Beverage Delivering industry. Entry level, of course, with part time hours to allow me to finish my degree and maybe a cert or 2. something like internal help-desk/support.

A (freelance-type) job opening

A bit of background: I have worked on the business end of monetizing games and applications on the various social networks out there. Recently I have purchased a few applications that are on the MySpace platform and now I need someone that can help out with the technical side of things because, to be honest, I know absolutely nothing. Well, I know enough to know that I can't do anything without help. I am bootstrapping this with a few dollars I managed to save while I was working those 80 hour weeks, which is why I need to work on a per-job basis at the moment.

What I am looking for: The apps are in PHP, MySQL, and Javascript, and are integrated into MySpace with OpenSocial. At this time I really need a freelancer type who knows a little about everything, as I will have to move everything to new servers asap as well as take care of a few simple CSS issues that have popped up. After we do that, I would like to add on to the admin section that is already set up and add some additional scripts and get some things set up that will integrate with the Myspace API. After that, there will be more to come as I will have a more concrete product roadmap ready to go.

Apparently the Myspace side of things is easy enough, so previous experience with that is not necessary. I'm sure you can pick that up.

Where: I'm located in Vancouver, but you can be anywhere.

I actually think that I fit the UI Developer description pretty spot on. If you're still around, can you tell me how working for the company is like? Can you give me the kind of culture? Is it extremely corporate or is it like facebook/google or somewhere in between? I'm not to worried about the prospects of newspapers, especially since I've been in startups for my whole career, but I am wondering if downsizing in the technology teams have happened recently.

Thanks for your help.

Sorry for the late reply, I was actually on the road a lot this month (two week honeymoon/roadtrip and then business travel). To answer your questions:

1) culture -- far more dynamic than you might guess for a company the size of the nyt operating group. of course a lot of your day to day depends on your team and direct manager; client tech (the front end people) seem to be on the ball generally but honestly I don't deal with them super-often. digital (the overall nytimes.com group) is like a company-within-a-company and feels a lot more like a tech company or startup than a "big company"

2) layoffs -- we did have some layoffs during the depths of the downturn but I think they were 90% in the business/journalism side of the house. The closest we came to tech layoffs were a few PMs and a couple of QA people, no developers have lost their jobs as far as I know.

Butcher of Song
Got a new job opening.

Hiring In: Brooklyn (DUMBO/Brooklyn Heights Area) NYC

Who we are: Freeverse INC, now a part of ngmoco:)

What we do: We make iPhone games.

Freeverse, developers and publishers of awesome titles such as Skee-Ball, Flick Fishing & Top Gun for iPhone & iPad, Marathon: Durandal for Xbox Live Arcade and Wingnuts 2 & Burning Monkey Solitaire for Mac, and winners of multiple Apple Design Awards, are looking for a certain someone to fill a unique position.

Looking For: a 70/30 Game Tester and IT. It is primarily a Game Testing position. The majority of the time it will be 70/30 - but depending on what's happening on a given day, this can swing to 30/70, 80/10, 100/0, 0/100, etc. The position will kick off on a 2-month contract, and for the right candidate it will become a full-time position.

You, the applicant, should be:

- Able to communicate well, both written and in-person.

- Able to commit to a Mon-Fri, 10am-6pm schedule, with occasional late days when needed.

- Able to handle a bit of grueling repetition.

Game Testing duties and requisites include:

- Testing games, of course! You'll be helping test out a slew of new mobile games - seeing where things go out of sync, making sure rules and order-of-operations are adhered to, looking for graphic glitches, etc.

- Writing brief reports on bugs that you encounter.

- You should be able to accurately describe a bug, either technically or in plain English. That is, you should have spotted at least three or four bugs in retail games you've purchased, and can complain about them in enough detail for someone else to understand.

Where it gets interesting is the IT side. Ready?

Requisites include, but are in no way limited to, the following:

- You have experience with OS X Server, and the major services included.

- You have experience with SVN.

- You've managed a small business network, including routing, switching, WAN troubleshooting, LAN troubleshooting, printers, firewalls, etc.

- You know your way drat well around Mac OS X, Windows Vista and 7. You can also get a good bit done using command line interfaces, especially under OS X.

- You know how to setup, search and change a MySQL database either via command line or GUI tools.

- You know the difference between a "MAC" and a "Mac".

- You know the difference between "dig" and "Digg".

Still with me? OK!

- You know what IMAP, Apache, CalDAV, FTP, SSL, SSH, XML and VPN are, and can explain each, ideally with an example or two from your personal or professional experiences.

- You know the difference between CAT-5 and CAT-6 Ethernet cable. In fact, maybe you've rolled your own cable.

- You're not afraid of getting underneath desks to run power, network and other cables.

- You can troubleshoot a Mac. Deeply. You should know what "Repair Permissions" does and does not do, what "GUID Partition Table" means, what a plist is, how to chmod, etc.

- Manuals? You don't need no stinkin' manuals. But you read them anyway.

- You can follow direction to the letter.

- You're graceful under pressure.

- You're not afraid to ask for help.

Something to note before applying, to save you some time: I have an itchy Delete key finger, so your materials (intro letter, résumé, whatever) *should represent your ability to handle the IT side.* I'm not looking for professional experience at a Fortune 500 company with a giant Cisco network - at the same time, being able to hook your Xbox 360 to your router doesn't impress. You don't have to know how to code. Experience with Tomcat or .NET is irrelevant.

What I'm getting at is, amount of professional experience is negligible - you should know if you can handle the above. If you can't, this isn't right for you.

If you're up for it though, drop me a line: newjob@freeverse.com.

--------------------------------------------------------------

Benefits: (if you are hired on full time)
• It's a game company. So no shoes or pants required. No horrible IT policies.
• 401K
• Health & Dental (We just changed over, not sure about Optical)
• Commuter Stuff (Comes out before taxes, but you pay for your metro card)
• Flexible work environment. What this means is, as your boss, I can approve vacation time/whatever as you need it. Technically on paper we have an allotment of days, but the real mantra is "get your poo poo done, and you can take the time you need"
• Office Pinball, Videogames & cat and dog.
• Unhealthy and Healthy drink and snack options stocked every week.
• Some other stuff about purchasing company hardware and what not.

Also, what's the pay? I actually don't know. But it will be competitive for both the industry and living and working in NYC (which can be a bitch).

Our address for those wanting to google map the area:
45 Main Street STE 506
Brooklyn, NY 11201

We are very close to the F, A/C and 2/3 trains. For what it's worth, I live in Jersey City and it takes me maybe 20 mins to get to work.

Ok I (Hippieman) didn't write any of that above. Don't yell at me. This is an ideal job for an entry level just out of college person. THe idea is if we get the right person they will move out of the QA stuff and into IT/Operations. If we get the wrong person, they might become a QA person.

If you apply, drop me an email bruce@freeverse.com so I can make sure it won't get nuked without getting in the pile. (I'm not doing the hiring on this letting someone else handle that).

I'M HUGE!
My experience:
Eight years in the IT software industry, mainly as a QA engineer. I also have two years of freelance PHP development experience, though my primary goal is to stay on the QA side. My primary focus has been automated testing and test documentation, though I have experience with virtually every aspect of the software QA process.

I'm currently managing a small team of testers at a startup development company. I'm ISTQB certified and am intimately familiar with the HP/Mercury test suites (Quality Center/TestDirector and QuickTest Professional), as well as industry standards and best practices for QA methodology and project lifecycles.

What I'm looking for:
A lead or management role with a QA department. I would prefer to keep closely involved with the technical side of things.

What I'm NOT looking for:
Entry-level testing positions. I've been doing this for a long time and have led successful projects from the QA side, so I'm quite comfortable with the responsibility of leading a team. I'm also not looking for a middle-management position where I'd be completely isolated from the actual testing process; I have a passion for technology and never want to lose the opportunity to "get my hands dirty".

Where I live:
Birmingham, AL

Where I'm looking:
Alabama, especially Birmingham or Huntsville. I'd be willing to consider relocation throughout the southeast for the right company.

When can I start:
I'd need a few weeks' notice for local jobs, slightly longer if it's out-of-state.

Requirements:
Full-time, permanent. A fair salary, decent benefits, and a good team to work with.

Can be reached via:
PM's here are ideal. I can give you further contact information via PM if necessary.

My experience:
4 years as a software developer in C++ and core Java with some occasional shell scripting. Significant experience with storage systems and protocols.

I also have a MS in Computer Science.

What I'm looking for:
A software development position where solving interesting problems is central to the position. I would prefer to work on a backend systems level/core product rather than something user-facing.

What I'm NOT looking for:
Junior level development work or any kind of sysadmin/helpdesk. Also not interested in making generic CRUD webapps.

Where I live:
Northwest Indiana

Where I'm looking:
Chicago, IL

When can I start:
Just need to be able to give notice to my current employer, so about 3 weeks after a signed offer letter is in hand.

Requirements:
Beat my current salary and provide a decent health plan. A 401k with matching would be swell too.

Can be reached via:
I would prefer PM on this forum if at all possible, or use the "click to e-mail" function in my profile. I can provide further details from there.

4 years of helpdesk work, 3 years working with Windows 2003 servers, 1 year supporting Windows 2000/2003/2008 servers in a web development company that designs and hosts websites.

I currently am first response for any server/website problems that come up. We currently have over 600 servers so I keep busy. If a site or server is down, I diagnose why it is down and what needs to be done to get it up, and then fix it. If I can't fix it, I call someone who can assist. I am also responsible for supporting over 200 workstations in an office environment in a help desk role, and responsible for supporting the 8 network printers we have. I am also familiar with VMWare.

I also have a BS in Computer Information Systems.

What I'm looking for:
A junior network administrator or junior server administrator. I don't feel comfortable managing an entire network of servers, workstations, and printers, but that's the path I want to take going forward. I just need to get some more experience. I would look at help desk, as long as it's not Level 1.

What I'm NOT looking for:
I don't want to deal with clients outside the company. I know how to program and can troubleshoot/debug some basic programs, but programming is not one of my strengths. I don't want to do Level 1 Help Desk support.

Where I live:
Chicago, IL

Where I'm looking:
Chicago area or Central IL (Champaign/Urbana, Springfield, Peoria)preferred, but I would move to Indiana, Wisconsin, Ohio, or Missouri.

When can I start:
My lease is up in my apartment in October, but I can start any time after I have a signed offer letter in hand and I have given my employer enough notice. I would say 3 weeks after getting the letter, possibly 4 if I have to move.

Requirements:
Beat my current salary and provide decent insurance. 401k is a HUGE plus.

Can be reached via:
You can PM me on the forum, or I can be reached by email at prkirwan AT gmail DOT com

I tried to be as clear as possible, but if anyone reading this has any questions or wants me to go into detail further, just let me know.

EDIT: If anyone else is interested, feel free to PM me, I'd post the job spec, but what ended up on the web is so wildly unrealistic as to be worthless.

I'm just so god damn happy.
My experience: Just graduated with my diploma in Computer Systems Technology from BCIT. I did a co-op term working in a small development shop, primarily using C#. I also worked the last couple of semesters, and the summer before that, as a lab proctor for the IT department, imaging labs and doing minor troubleshooting. Most of the coursework we did over the last couple of semesters was in C or C++.

What I'm looking for: Entry level software development.

What I'm NOT looking for: Help desk, data entry, design heavy web stuff.

Where I live: Vancouver, BC

Where I'm looking: Greater Vancouver

When can I start: Immediately.

Requirements: Full time with decent pay.

Can be reached via: Preferably PM, I can give you more information then.

My experience: Home user support for years. Troubleshooted tons of machines, all mostly standard issues, etc. Nothing formal, other than an A+ cert, but I'm a quick learner and while I try to avoid making mistakes, I never make the same mistake twice. Have some experience in an office environment as well as experience working on film sets, as that sometimes helps around here.

What I'm looking for: Help desk, entry level, etc.

What I'm NOT looking for: Nothing, I'll do just about any job I'm qualified or overqualified for. If you need a janitor, sure, just teach me about Citrix or Cisco firewalls or something.

Where I live: Los Angeles, CA

Where I'm looking: Los Angeles, CA

When I can start: Today.

Requirements: Paid + FT. Pretty lofty, huh?

Can be reached via: Here, PM, or c.huson@gmail.com

Basically, if you need a guy who will work his rear end off, is competent, and can follow directions easily, I'm your man. I'm getting Network+ certified hopefully before August, but depending on how the studying goes it may not be until early August.

Filled!

Too bad no goons applied :(

I did ask a guy if he had stairs in his house though; always wanted to do that.

JARED NUMBERS: BACK IN ACTION
My experience: Extensive home user support and currently over 4 years at a large-scale electronic and direct-mail company. I've run CAT5, made cables, configured machines, Ghosted machines, troubleshooted hardware/software/network issues, and just plain made things work even when the machine in question wanted desperately for me to let it go. I'm the guy who gets annoyed at repetitive work and finds a way to make it faster and easier while improving the quality of the work itself. I like to think of myself as the grease that keeps my company running smoothly through tough spots, and my performance evaluations reflect this. I'm efficient and accurate in my communication and my actions, and I pick up new skills fast.

What I'm looking for: Entry level network ops, college help desk/net ops. I don't mind getting messy (actually kind of like it) to run cabling or install jacks. I've got a little experience in electrical wiring and installing receptacles as well.

What I'm NOT looking for: Help Desk or Phone Support (unless you're a university)

Where I live: Philadelphia Suburbs

Where I'm looking: Philadelphia area unless you want me to telecommute

When I can start: 2 weeks

Requirements: negotiable, but health benefits please

Hiring In: Salt Lake City, UT

Who we are: Hosted ACD / SaaS Call Center Solution. Overall the company is pretty solid. We're growing fairly rapidly and have been stable for years. The atmosphere is pretty laid back for anyone not in management.

What we need: While the company has a pretty big R&D presence, I only know we work with C#/.Net stuff in that regard. I work in our NOC and we currently need some people with Telecom/VoIP experience or a strong data network background open to learning Telecom. We also have open positions for supporting our applications as well as programming. The specific list changes regularly, but you can check here for a current list.

Updates: We have been given additional openings in our Network Operations Center and have a couple openings in our Software Support Team. If you know how to troubleshoot software or have any kind of telephony background, there are currently positions open. Day to day tasks are generally troubleshooting issues with our platform and network and for the NOC would also involve maintaining the platform/network as well as responding to things that come up. If you have experience with supporting/maintaining VoIP, that's a definite need right now. Also, having call center experience is huge as that's the industry which makes up our customer base, but it's not a call center job. (We talk to customers, but it's not a call center experience here.) In addition, if you can troubleshoot and know data networking at a decent level (CCNA would be great but not required) and can troubleshoot, then you're probably a good candidate. The hiring process looks a lot into VoIP/SIP knowledge and TDM, but if you hit the baseline you're of interest.

My department needs people! Description here.

Salary: The range is pretty wide depending on position, but it's pretty good. Technical positions seem to start at 35-40K or above depending on the specific position, but that's the lower end for tech support, our NOC generally starts much higher but I don't know the specific salary range. If you have specific questions, PM me or e-mail me via gmail (gozoku).

Edit: Updated with current openings as of 9/21/12.

Any idea if it's worth applying from out of town. I'm just north of Dallas, but I'd be willing to consider relocating for the right job (and I've heard Austin is pretty awesome).
