I have a long string of crazy forwarded political e-mails from my father. Recently, I have been exploring ways to counter troll him, and then I stumbled upon this thread. So I sent him this e-mail. I got the link from earlier on in the thread. xanthig posted:subject: Happy fourth of july I got this in response. xanthig's dad posted:Nice music... interesting point. Hot drat! That felt good. This kinda poo poo does happen and I've witnessed it first hand. There are lots of ways to cheat the system, which is terribly fractured now, and get more than you're entitled to. We literally saw someone do this two weeks ago (and reported them edit: the cashier...didn't have a clue who the person is). I mean you have to be in collusion with the cashier to do it, but it's do-able.

The truck looks like this Click here for the full 610x777 image. It appears to be relatively new, not on Snopes yet. I found a few people saying this is an old picture with an incorrect explanation but can't find proof yet. Any help?

This could also be referring to the estate tax. I'm not 100% on this, but I think it is repealed for 2010 due to a quirk in the law, but comes in back into effect starting in 2011. It's just easier to track now though since it's all electronic so they can look up which stores have been taking in the charges and compare them to other stores in the area. Link to a story about it: http://www.cnn.com/2010/CRIME/03/18/florida.fraud.arrests/index.html The crazy thing is that the shop in the story did $34k in EBT sales in December while other stores of the same size in the area only did about $1k. So, yeah. It still happens.

Strudel Man posted:It's referring to the natural expiration of Bush's tax cuts. In 1999, the top marginal tax rate was 39.6% on everything over $283,150; for 2009, it's 35% on everything over $372,950. If the cuts are not extended, we will return to a 39.6% top marginal rate in 2011, though I'm not entirely sure at what point that rate will then kick in. I'm trying to convince someone that income tax rates actually didn't "skyrocket withing six months of Obama's taking office". Is there a government site or something that lists marginal tax rates/brackets for the last ten years or so?

From all the information I could find, when the food stamp program moved to the card there was a fairly decent drop in food assistance fraud. Depending on the source it was anywhere from 30 - 60%. Either way it's a bullshit talking point because the occurrence isn't as common as some try to claim, and the amount of money being discussed is a drop in the bucket when compared to the many other orifices taxpayers bleed money.

Ruckby posted:Content: Wow, this one is ooold. http://www.snopes.com/politics/religion/islam.asp Snopes quotes sections of the original article that were left out of the email: quote:The faulty textbook, Across the Centuries, has more than its share of deceit. It is stated that Islam, Judaism and Christianity share in common the belief in one god. This is a half-truth, which is the worst kind of lie. Christianity and Judaism worship one God, the God of Abraham. Islam worships one god named Allah. This hook [sic] is misleading on the part of Houghton-Mifflin. The publisher apparently is attempting to legitimize Islam. The first part is based on a misunderstanding of the distinctions between Islam, Christianity and Judaism. First, Muslims do, in fact, worship the God of Abraham - they see their faith as a continuation of Judaism and Christianity, just as Christians see their own faith as a continuation of Judaism. Second, Allah is just the Arabic word meaning "god" - Arabic-speaking Christians call God "Allah" just like Muslims do. Third, even if we accept the claim that the Muslim God is distinct from the Christian God or the Jewish God, Across the Centuries is still correct in stating that the three faiths are monotheistic! Also, crazy OWG conspiracy theories are crazy.
