Very cool; thanks for this. I hadn't realized that so many of the movies I crossed off were unassigned. I thought it was just a few of them. At least I'm pretty sure I win at watching movies on my list independently. :colbert:

I thought Barry Lyndon was one of the top recommended movies. I thought briefly about compiling a list of most commonly listed movies, but I do not have your patience or your apparent resistance to headaches, FFD!

EDIT: Three of the assignments I gave out are incomplete. Dammit, people!

Ok, this sounds neat, I'm in.
Peaceful Anarchy, I pick Ong-bak because it's the only one on your list I've seen.

The Great Escape - I have wanted to see this forever but have been to lazy. Steve Mcqueen is the man.

The Maltese Falcon - I saw The Big Sleep a while ago and I want to see something else with Bogart in it.

Hard Boiled - I have seen small parts and would like to see the whole thing.

Solaris - Stalker is one of my favourite movies, I want to see more Tarkovsky.

A Fistful of Dollars - Playing Red Dead Redemption has made me want to see a good western.

Vertigo - I figure this is a move everyone should see based on what I have heard about it.

2001: A Space Odyssey - Tired of internet nerds raving about how good this is, I want to know if I should agree or scoff.

Cool Hand Luke - Have had this one recommended to me but haven't bothered seeing it yet.

The Shining - I've seen to many parodies of this without actually seeing it.

The Godfather: Part III - It feels bad to have seen the first two and not this one.

Jedrick: 2001: A Space Odyssey. Tempted to recommend Fistful because I also played Red Dead and you're pretty spot on here, but I'd say 2001 should be higher on the priorities. Try not to think of the hype and just let the movie do its thing.

I watched Elizabeth, rounding out the 1998 Best Picture nominees, and can't say it was my cup of tea. 'Style over substance' popped into my mind...'period piece porn' seems a little too harsh...ultimately it just didn't stick. Ah well. It was pretty trippy - after just watching Shakespeare in Love - seeing both Joseph Fiennes and Geoffrey Rush in completely different roles in movies set in 16th Century England.

Updated List:

It's a Wonderful Life - Tier 10, Mr. Smith Goes to Washington - Tier 10
The Adventures of Robin Hood (1938) - Going to veer off the Capra/Stewart track for a Claude Rains movie I haven't seen.

Singing in the Rain - Tier 9
Dancer in the Dark - I have seen one von Trier movie, which I thoroughly hated. However, I believe this film will be a bit more accessible, so I'll give him another try I suppose. I've also wanted to see this movie for a while, but never had occasion to watch it.

On the Waterfront - Tier 9, A Streetcar Named Desire - Tier 10
East of Eden - I have seen Rebel Without a Cause and fell asleep halfway through Giant with little interest in returning (oh it's "sprawling" alright), but the one film of Mr. Dean's that I haven't seen is East of Eden. Also directed by Elia Kazan. I am eager to see this one.

Aguirre: The Wrath of God - Tier 8, The Elephant Man - Tier 5
I, Claudius - 1970s miniseries - featuring Mr. John Hurt - about the Roman empire. I've heard of the book, but didn't know this was a miniseries. With a 9.3 on IMDB, color me interested.

The Graduate - Tier 9, Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf? - Tier 7
A Man for All Seasons - Also based on a play, this beat Virginia Woolf in nearly every category in the Oscars en route to a near-sweep of its categories. Surely must be good (I think?). This wasn't ever on my RADAR, and I have no clue what it's about outside of characters, but now I'm looking forward to it.

Stand by Me - Tier 7
Hannah and her Sisters - I've seen pretty much all of Woody Allen's early work and all of his recent work, but nothing in between. Seems like a good enough place to start.

8 1/2 - Tier 9, Amarcord - Tier 7
Nights of Cabiria - Would like to continue with the Fellini filmography (feel free to recommend an alternate Fellini work!).

Ed Wood - Tier 9, Fear & Loathing in Las Vegas - Tier 7, Shakespeare in Love - Tier 9, Elizabeth - Tier 5
La Haine - Thought I painted myself into a bit of a corner with this string, but wait...La Haine with Vincent Cassell is a movie I've never heard of but has amazingly good reviews. Voila.

Bowling for Columbine - Last Waltz got no love, so I'm subbing in a documentary that I'd probably never see under normal circumstances. I don't usually like documentaries that push hard on one agenda, though.

City Lights - Never had any interest in watching this movie, but I gather it's rather brilliant for the times (or any time).

Especially after seeing the list of top recommends, I'm in the mood to mix things up. The problems with Bowling, including Moore's truth-enhancement, are widely known and easy to dig up for reference. It's still an enjoyable movie.

Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind was good, a little better than I expected but not a top movie. I thought there was a little too much in the way of obvious independent/filmschool acting and setups, especially regarding side plots, even though the central bits were extremely interesting.

Now with 100% more ratings! (If these disagree with previous ratings, meh)

-One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest 6/10
-The Great Dictator- I don't think I've ever seen a Chaplain film all the way through.
-Once Upon a Time in the West- Love Good/Bad/Ugly and so forth, didn't catch this one.
-Vertigo- Don't generally like Hitchcock, I've always thought of giving this a chance.
-Lawrence of Arabia- 9/10
-The Curious Case of Benjamin Button- Not usually a tear-jerker sort of person.
-Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind- 8/10
-Serenity- Same reasons as the new Star Trek, despite as many recommendations.
-Raging Bull- I usually don't jive with deNiro, I didn't even like Taxi Driver.
-Inglourious Basterds- Missed it at box office, haven't caught it since.
-Brazil- I saw 12 Monkeys, so don't give me that look!
-Star Trek(2009)- No matter how many people recommend it, I can't get past the iPod visuals.
-Ikiru- 10/10
-M- Metropolis is my #1 movie, all-time, haven't seen any other Lang

TannhauserGate, watch Vertigo.

Ong-bak was kind of ridiculous but pretty entertaining. The two big chase scenes were the best part in my mind, but a lot of the fights were pretty good and very stylized. Martial Arts movies will probably never be my thing but they are enjoyable.

Updated list:

America, America There's a Cahiers du cinéma top 100 films list out there and I have only this one left, which I would have a hard time making myself watch otherwise. A Kazan film about the American dream that's 3 hours long, that really doesn't sound very interesting but who knows.

Nostalghia Tarkovsky's cool, guess I need to see this.

Beau Travail I've never seen anything from Claire Denis, this sounds like a good place to start.

Europa '51 Another highly regarded Italian director I'm kind of meh on, but it does have Ingrid Bergman.

The Devils I've heard good stuff about this and the only Ken Russell film was a very pleasant surprise so I'd like to check out more.

Lilja 4-ever I'm under the impression this is very depressing but very good.

Taegukgi hwinalrimyeo A Korean war film that's really highly rated on Imdb, hadn't watched it beacuase I thought it was long but two and a half hours doesn't seem that long now.

Koyaanisqatsi I've had the DVD for a while and I've come this close to putting it on a couple of times yet something seems to come up to distract me. Give me that extra push.

The Testament of Dr. Mabuse Let's what trouble he gets into with sound.

Killer's Kiss I've seen everything Kubrick made after this, guess I should watch this too.

And while I loved it, I can sorta see why some people are gettin tired of Guy Ritchie. He really can't work with any environment except the criminal world of london. He really needs to try something new, because he's really good at what he does.

My list:
1 Dead Man (1995) One of my friends (who's an even bigger filmnerd than me) told me to see this. And it sounds awesome!

2 Deer Hunter I'm madly in love with vietnam movies already so why haven't I seen this? Garh, I'm so lazy.

3 Anything by Lars Von Trier except for Antichrist and The boss of it all Again, I'm lazy.

4 Eraserhead David Lynch flew over my head. Wanna fix that.

5 Jin-Roh - The Wolf BrigadeFirst anime movie on this list. I know almost nothing about this, so I've been hesitant to check it out. You never really know with anime, but I wanna see this.

6 Cinderella Man I Love boxing movies, but this one got away. Dunno why really.

7 Yatterman I wanne see more of Miike, and this one sounds well... completly bonkers.

8 Nightmare Before Christmas A movie that has haunted me since I was a little kid. I wanna get closure!

9 Heat My dad bought this one when we were in Thailand when I was very young, so I considered it a "grown-up" movie until I was like 16. Then the cassette was broken. :(

Hellbunny, I give you Memento. While it didn't warp my mind the way I was told it would it's still great and worthwhile and it's executed brilliantly.

My list:

1) Eraserhead - I've never seen a David Lynch film before. I've had this one on my hard drive for awhile now and I've always been curious about it.

2) Apocalypse Now - I started watching it about a year ago. I got about thirty minutes in and got too tired to stay up. Never finished it.

3) The Warriors - Always interested me, never sat down with it.

4) The Maltese Falcon - I like noir and my grandpa told me it was great.

5) There Will Be Blood - I've heard a lot about it.

6) Dr. Strangelove - I like Kubrick, haven't gotten around to this one.

7) Goldfinger - I've never seen a Connery Bond movie and for this I feel terrible. In fact, any of them will do but this is the one I hear the most about.

8) Pan's Labyrinth - Looks great, heard a lot about it.

9) American History X - Same reason as everything else here.

10) High Fidelity - This is the movie everybody tells me I'll love and are kind of shocked I haven't seen it.

TrixiRabbi, have fun with Pan's Labyrinth, it was messed up.

2001: A Space Odyssey was drat good, the A.I. core scene in particular was amazing. All the little details in the movie were great, the long, quiet takes made me notice a lot of things. The ending was fairly mind warping but i think that the "trippy colour scene" went on a bit long. Over all a fantastic movie 9/10

You can't stop what's coming
Jedrick: It was tough choosing, as you've got so many great ones on your list, but every time I watch The Shining I'm blown away. Enjoy it.

Bridge on the River Kwai: Fantastic. The beautiful location shooting was great, the finale was pitch-perfect and Guiness' performance is justifiably iconic. If I have any complaint, it's that William Holden's character and story come off a bit broad at times - but it's a relatively small issue.

Lawrence of Arabia - I don't typically like period epics, and this is the one most people think of when you say "period epic."

The Searchers - I kind of lumped this in with classic westerns, which I tend to dislike for the most part. That's also why I haven't seen High Noon. I do like a lot of revisionist Westerns, so I should probably watch more of the all-time greats.

To Kill A Mockingbird - Have caught most of it on TV at various points, so it's low on the priority list

The Bridge on the River Kwai - Same as To Kill
The Rules of the Game - May as well start at the top of the TSPDT 1000.

Bonnie and Clyde - No reason, really. I've heard its reputation is greater its actual quality, so it didn't seem pressing.

Mean Streets - I'm pretty much working through Scorsese in reverse chronological order, and this is his last "great" movie I've yet to watch

Bicycle Thieves - For whatever reason, I've never seen any Italian neo-realist movies. I guess Fellini just filled my Italian movie quota.

Breakfast at Tiffany's - Heard conflicting things about it.

From Russia With Love was well made and all, but I was bored through almost all of it (the Bond vs. Quint fight was good). toro913, you stole my chance to recommend Lawrence of Arabia again :argh: so you get your very own epic, The Leopard. It's pretty great too.

Yet another film set in medieval Europe involving politics and the church. Well, except for the nun orgies and torture. The Devils sure was a unique experience. I knew I was in for something strange and daring, but I still wasn't quite prepared for this. The main thought I had while watching it was that this is the film Salo wanted to be, only The Devils came first. I enjoyed the satire and strangeness, even if sometimes it undermined itself and I wish I could watch a better version but that doesn't seem likely in the near future.

The Shining was a good watch. Jack Nicholson's descent into madness was very entertaining and was hands down the best part of the movie. Danny Lloyd was surprisingly good for a child actor. Only gripes are that Shelly Duvall was a little lackluster and the ending was a tad lame. 8/10

Jedrick, you get Dr. Strangelove because it's loving great don't ask questions. You should be building more Minecraft hotels, but I will excuse you.

I watched Sunset Blvd and it was pretty great. Gloria Swanson is loving perfect in this movie. One of the most flawless performances I've ever seen. The whole movie is absolute gold, really. All right, Mr. DeMille, I'm ready for my close-up. Creeepy and brilliant. This film further cemented my love for Billy Wilder and noir in general.

~New List~

1. Shane
Oh boy I do love westerns, I just haven't gotten around to this classic.
Raiders of the Lost Ark
Casablanca
Se7en

2. Blue Velvet
The only Lynch I've seen is Dune, which I really enjoyed. It's shameful I haven't seen this (hey that's what this thread is for!).

3. Chinatown
I've only seen two Polanski films (The Ninth Gate and The Pianist), so I guess you could count Rosemary's Baby here, too. Just haven't gotten around to them yet.

4. The Deer Hunter
I can't believe I haven't seen this. I don't even know much about it aside from Walken and Di Nero.
Amelie
The 400 Blows

5. Once Upon a Time in the West/America
I'll count these under the same number because I have the same reason for both: I love Leone, but I haven't gotten around to 'em yet.

6. The Killing
I'm running out of Kubrick films to see honestly, and this seems like the next logical step!
Spartacus

7. Rear Window
I haven't seen a lot of Hitchcock, but this is the highest on IMDB's list and I haven't seen it, so why not start there?

8. Vacancy
Sort of a weird addition to my list, but I really like Luke Wilson and I recently watched Kontroll so I kinda love Nimrod Antal now. I'll eventually see Armored and Predators (i've heard mixed things about both, I reeeally liked Kontroll).
It's a Wonderful Life

9. Lawrence of Arabia
I've just never had the urge to watch it. Pretty sure it'll be the next recommendation anyway...
Sunset Blvd.
American History X

10. Seven Samurai
What can I say? I love the Kurosawa films I've already seen. I suppose the 200+ minute length has kept me from sitting down to it, though.

HIT ME.

Finished watching Jackie Brown last night and found it very enjoyable. I wouldn't consider it one of Tarantino's best and it didn't feel like it had much rewatchability but it was nevertheless a good film. I really liked the differing perspectives during the money exchange and the way Tarantino manages to empower women in his movies.

The Machine you get to watch The Deer Hunter. Prepare to be enthralled.

Updated List:

Casablanca
Cool Hand Luke
It's a Wonderful Life - Need to get some James Stewart down me.

2001: A Space Odyssey
North by Northwest - I loved Rear Window and thought I'd add another Hitchcock.

Amadeus
Rear Window
Psycho - Might as well replace Rear Window with another Hitchcock film, seeing as I enjoyed it so much. Hope the parodies don't ruin this one, although I think I've already seen the infamous shower scene.

Seven Samurai
The Magnificent Seven - Seems fitting to replace Seven Samurai with this. Westerns are a genre that's almost completely missing from my repertoire, having only really watched Sergio Leone's and some of the more modern, post 90's ones. I put this down to my Dad's ceaseless watching of them when I was growing up and him being able to actually quote the next lines in pretty much any Western that was on.

Once Upon A Time In America
Zatoichi - Can't remember when or who recommended this to me but it's been sat in my DVD collection for about 4 years and I haven't watched it.

Bande á part - I bought this on DVD knowing it shared the name with Tarantino's production company. Never got round to watching it, though.

Jackie Brown
Citizen Kane - Just never got chance.

Children of Men
The Deer Hunter
Sunset Boulevard
Hard Boiled - Never seen this and I've no idea why. It looks like the sort of movie I'd like and I've heard great things about John Woo.

Badlands
The Graduate - I really don't know much about this film and I've not seen any of Hoffman's work before Rainman, really. Never had the opportunity to watch this.

Downfall
Serpico - Big fan of Pacino but never sat down and watched this.

I'm sick so not really in the mood to write a review at the moment...
Yojimbo - What I enjoyed most besides Mifune, was the variety of characters. You have the calm old man, the goofy old man, the greedy guy, the slick guy with the dodgy gaze, the MONSTER. Without doubt as enjoyable as Seven Samurai.

mikewozere - Watch Citizen Kane next.

1. 400 Blows
I bought this together with Diary of a Country Priest on Criterion but since I had not wanted to see The 400 Blows for as long as Country Priest, I never got around to it. Also, I have never seen French New Wave before.

2. Lolita
On my shelf I have every Kubrick movie which I was going to through chronologically (I have seen Full Metal Jacket, Clockwork Orange and 2001 before), but when I got up to Lolita I just stopped. I have seen bits on TV but it looks so bland... I love Kubrick so I will give it a shot.

3. Hamnstad (Port of Call)
When I heard about Criterion's Eclipse series I was really excited about this since Ingmar Bergman is a person and director I hold in high respect, but I just stopped watching when I got to this. Also after I finish this box I will watch...

4. Jungfrukällan (The Virgin Spring)
No real excuse here.

5. M
We were going to watch it in film class but I was sick that day so I never got around to it.

6. Metropolis
Had it for the longest time, never watched it.

7. Rashômon
Yojimbo
A Fistful of Dollars
Never seen any of the "Dollar" movies.

8. Psycho
I really do not have a good excuse here, though I have not seen too many Hitchcock's either except from Vertigo, Rear Window and The Man Who Knew Too Much.

9. Three Colours
Never seen a Kieselowski before but I know I should.

10. Lĺt Den Rätte Komma In (Let The Right One In)
The Royal Tenenbaums
Bought this on Criterion for cheap on an auction site and it has been sitting left unseen on my shelf ever since. Also, never seen a Wes Andersson.

von Braun you should watch Metropolis if you already own it.

I watched Barry Lyndon and thought it was great, Ryan O'Neil's questionable Irish accent aside. I love that Kubrick's use of natural light (And realistic-looking light) as much as possible stops it looking like it was filmed in any particular period as opposed to just playing out in front of you, unlike most period films which are produced in ways that will eventually date them.

The slow pace suits the film considering that it features mostly upper class Western European characters who aren't even allowed to express anger except when channeled into the rigidly-ordered form of a duel, and the one real display of anger leads to the character basically being ostracised from polite society. And again I don't really get the accusation of Kubrick being a cold director when there's a number of these emotional scenes that are actually amplified to some extent by the characters's attempts not to indulge them.

Great film but I'm thinking of adding shorter films from this point on because people seem to love giving me 150+ minute films and I don't have so much free time at the moment and I've already got a further three of this length waiting to be watched...

The 400 Blows - I think I'll probably get on with Truffaut better than Godard and yet haven't seen anything of his besides his American movie.

Solaris - Even though I love Stalker I find it hard to motivate myself to sit down and watch this since it's even longer. I also hate the Soderbergh version.

Sullivan's Travels - Another film about Hollywood since I enjoyed Sunset Boulevard so much, and I've heard it's pretty funny.

Persona - I liked The Silence a lot so I should get around to this at some point.

The Rules of the Game - I don't really know anything about this but I see it so exalted so often that I feel I'm going to have to watch it sometime.

- I have a strong disinclination toward self-indulgence.

The Magnificent Ambersons - Knowing how badly butchered it was on release from Welles's cut I've never really bothered to seek it out even though I hear it's still a great film regardless of that.

The Draughtsman's Contract - The only Greenaway film I've seen is The Cook, the Thief, His Wife & Her Lover which was pretty excellent so I'm looking to watch more at some point.

Bicycle Theives - Same as Rules of the Game, really.

Treasure of the Sierra Madre - Seems like it'd be right up my street and it's had an influence on films and directors that I love. And a great Simpsons episode. Like Casablanca it's another case of me not feeling a need to seek out American films from a popular period.

Give it a whirl. You may find it's less about personal self-indulgence and more about indulgence into the profession of filmmaking or even art in general.

Finally watched To Kill A Mockingbird after it sat on my desk for a month. I expected to love it and indeed I did. I wasn't expecting the themes to focus more on the world through a child's eyes rather than themes specific to race. I enjoyed the ending much more that way instead of another "and then we learned black people weren't animals after all!" ending. 4.5 out of 5 stars.

A Nightmare on Elm Street – I’ve seen most horror classic by now but have never had any interest in this movie.

Amadeus – I was underwhelmed by the play and so I haven’t been especially inspired to see the film.

Das Boot – Nabbed this one from the imdb top 250. I don’t watch a lot of war movies even though on the rare occasion I do watch I often times love them, including Letters From Iwo Jima, Apocalypse Now, Downfall and Joyeux Noël.

The Godfather Part II – I didn’t have any desire to watch a sequel after the first one. Call me crazy.

The Karate Kid – Recently a friend of mine informed me this is actually a worthwhile film. I was under the impression it was not.

The Maltese Falcon – I love film noir detective stories to death but haven’t seen this. I know not why.

The Man Who Knew Too Much (1956) – Watched the original and I keep putting off seeing the remake even though I love Hitchcock.

Pi – I once lied and said I saw this. I did not.

Saving Private Ryan – I like Spielberg’s serious work but have avoided this since my grandfather (who was at Normandy the day after D-Day) said it was horrifying.

To Kill a Mockingbird
King Kong (1933) – I know this is supposed to be a classic but I already know everything that happens and terrible stop motion animation just takes me out of a film unless I'm watching it for camp value.

Mr. George Kaplan, you get to watch The Godfather Part II, because if you have seen the first you need to see this one.

Dr. Strangelove was well, strange. It was entertaining and fairly funny at parts but some of the jokes were a little too hokey. The bombing run and Dr. Strangelove's speeches were definitely the highlights.8/10

Dr. No - I love Bond movies but I have never seen the first.

Cool Hand Luke - Have had this one recommended to me but haven't bothered seeing it yet.

Raging Bull - Always heard good things, plus it's Scorsese.

The Godfather: Part III - It feels bad to have seen the first two and not this one.

Jedrick, I'll go ahead and recommend you A Fistful of Dollars now, but I will add the caveat that it's the weakest of the Man with No Name trilogy (which isn't to say that it's bad - it's not at all - only that it gets much better).

I watched Bowling for Columbine. I liked the beginning, and some of the movie was very entertaining/insightful, so I didn't completely hate it, but all too often he presents one side, and sometimes completely misrepresents what he is portraying. And the whole 'white people hate brown people' 20-30 minute long tirade in the middle of the movie muddies the thesis (in addition to the fact that it's completely idiotic). It was a noble effort trying to pursue the answer to the question of 'what is it about America that lends itself to such a high murder rate?' but I just don't think he did a very good job of it.

Updated List:

It's a Wonderful Life - Tier 10, Mr. Smith Goes to Washington - Tier 10
The Adventures of Robin Hood (1938) - Going to veer off the Capra/Stewart track for a Claude Rains movie I haven't seen.

Singing in the Rain - Tier 9
Dancer in the Dark - I have seen one von Trier movie (Dogville), which I hated.

Voila.

Bowling for Columbine - Tier 5
Capturing the Friedmans - I don't know much about this movie, but it frequently ranks amongst top recent documentaries, and has good reviews.

City Lights - Never had any interest in watching this movie, but I gather it's rather brilliant for the times (or any time).

Arkane, Hannah and her Sisters is one of my favourite Woody Allen films, so you get that.

Nostalghia is good and really well shot and I enjoyed what I got out of it. Unfortunately, as has happened with other Tarkovsky films I have to be in the right frame of mind for his films and, while I thought I was, I wasn't quite there. At some point I'll make myself a Tarkovsky weekend and rewatch this, Stalker and The Mirror.

America, America There's a Cahiers du cinéma top 100 films list out there and I have only this one left, which I would have a hard time making myself watch otherwise. A Kazan film about the American dream that's 3 hours long, that really doesn't sound very interesting but who knows.

All right, I'm terrible at this, I just watched the movie today and really enjoyed it, definitely appealed to my generally left-wing sentiments, though the overall philosophy just seemed to be "stop being dicks to your fellow man". The acting by the Joads was good, especially Ma. I did think they probably tried to compress too much from the book into just 2 hours, especially in the first half of the movie.

Marioinblack, I've seen all of your movies but I'm going to recommend my favorite one of those, Saving Private Ryan.

1. City Lights Blazing Saddles - never really loved Mel Brooks but this one seems popular
2. Cinema paradiso - don't know anything about it other than it's rated quite high on IMDB
3. All About Eve - It's on every best-of list.
4. Rebecca - one of the major Hitch films I haven't seen
5. Sunrise: A Song of Two Humans - I have no idea what this is about, but it sounds intriguingly abstract.
6. It Happened One Night - i would like to see some early Capra.
7. The Best Years of Our Lives - this seems like an unusually dark film for its time period, so that interests me
8. The Grapes of Wrath Stalker - never seen a Tarkovsky film.
9. Viridiana - I have not really enjoyed any Bunuel film i've seen but i'll keep trying him, as a fan of surrealism in general.
10. Le Samourai - has supposedly influenced a lot of movies i enjoy.

Hellybunny, go watch Dancer In The Dark.

Bicycle Thieves was good. It's my first Italian Neorealist film, I think, and I can see why it was so influential and generally hailed as greatness, but it didn't really light any fires in me. There are some magnificent sequences, though, my favorite being the church scene, which played out almost like something from a Hitchcock film. The actors are all very good, and I particularly liked the kid (he looked familiar, though the internet tells me he went on to be a math teacher), who managed to balance precociousness, actual street-smarts, and a sense of innocence into an interesting little bundle.

1) Das Boot - Having just recently had to clean out my old family home, it became really obvious how much my dad loving loved this movie because I came across like four different recorded-from-TV VHS tapes. It's been on my "should see" list for a while but I've just never gotten around to it and I don't know why.

2) The Conformist - I've been interested in this ever since I saw a neat cover someone made for it in a "fake Criterion art" thread somewhere, and it sounds interesting too. I'd like to expand my knowledge of Bernardo Bertolucci as well; I thought The Last Emperor was interesting if kind of flawed, but apparently he's a pretty big name.

3) Moon - This came through our town pretty much momentarily and it's been hanging around on my Netflix queue for a while. It just never really gets up there for some reason or another.

4) Les Enfants Du Paradis - Hello, TSPDT #29! This is long and old and French. I'll probably love it!

5) Yojimbo/Sanjuro - It's my eventual goal to watch (and generally keep up with) the Criterion Blu-Ray line, and I liked Ikiru, so let's follow up with another Kurosawa (double-feature). I'm not really sure how I feel about samurai films, but these are pretty highly-regarded.

6) Vivre sa vie - Replacing a new-wave with a new-wave, this is another meant-to-never-saw. Great that it's on Blu now. I think I skipped this one for A Woman Is A Woman when they were doing a Godard retrospective at SIFF.

7) Baraka - Put it on Netflix queue after seeing Koyaanisqatsi, never got it up to the top three because half of my dogged devotion to Koyetc is the Philip Glass score and the theme about industrialization. But apparently it's like mindblowingly cool or something I dunno.

8) Ordet - I'll play your games, TSPDT. This actually looks kind of interesting, like a Bergman film almost (and it probably is, I still haven't worked my way through a good deal of his work). I've only seen one other Dreyer, Vampyr, which in fact I own and desperately need to see again.

9) The Leopard - Well, I've heard this is good. I like films like this, films about society during an upset (I suppose that's one reason why I found Gone With The Wind so captivating), and it'd be interesting to see a film about Sicily, where my Grandfather was born.

10) Through A Glass Darkly - Bergman catch-up time. The first of a "trilogy" (not really). Apparently it's about some people on an island, but isn't that what every Bergman film is about? I guess this spot is reserved for more Bergmans.

Hellbunny posted:

TrixRabbi, how the gently caress did Memento not warp your mind? I really can't think of any movie that has so much mind fuckery (whille not being an arthouse film).

I thought it was a great film, and I loved the way it played with your impressions of each character, but like Inception - my mind wasn't blown.

As for Pan's Labyrinth, especially after a day of watching terrible movies (Darkness Falls, Cop Out), it was excellent. I kind of expected the fantasy element to be the main focal point but still, it was magnificent.

Here is my updated list:

8) American History X - Same reason as everything else here.

9) High Fidelity - This is the movie everybody tells me I'll love and are kind of shocked I haven't seen it.

10) The Wild Bunch - I have my uncle's copy lying around (He'd probably like it back). I started watching it but it really kind of subverted what I was expecting it to be and I really didn't like it. I turned it off about half an hour in, but I figure I should probably finish it.

Finally, Peaceful Anarchy, I'm gonna give you Koyaanisqati.

I choose this one for you. You have a lot of great movies that you need to see, but sit down and watch the Warriors already. Make sure you have time to kill because you'll watch it over again.

Movies:
Iron Monkey-I literally have no idea why I haven't watched this one yet. I love me some martial arts.
In The Name of the Father-Daniel Day-Lewis is amazing, and I'm pretty sure he's amazing in this one.
The Big Sleep (original and remake)-Don't ask me why I haven't seen either.
The Quiet Man-I am not a fan of John Wayne, but I feel as though I'm doing a disservice to myself by not watching Wayne/Ford movies. The Searchers was incredible.
Killer Klowns from Outer Space-I've known about this forever, but have never seen it.
Lawrence of Arabia-Until last night, this was paired with The Seventh Seal at the top of the list of movies I've never seen.
The Maltese Falcon-I am a fan of Dashiell Hammett, so, why haven't I seen this?
Rebel Without a Cause-Again, I've known about this forever, but have never seen it.

Note: those are all on my DVR or scheduled to record in the near future. I'll watch them all eventually. :shobon:

The A-Team Van: watch Lawrence of Arabia

Ok, so I finally watched Apocalypse Now, and it was really good. The redux version, since that's what I got assigned. I liked the French plantation scene. It really added some context to what was happening in the movie, plus it tied into the colonialist themes in Heart of Darkness. It did seem to gently caress with the pacing, though, and there were a few other places where the movie seemed to kind of stall. There was a lot of stuff I thought the movie did better than the book. It might have just been Conrad's style, but the movie seemed much more evocative. Of course the movie had a much greater scope, too, but the book was quite dull.

Updated list:
The Idiots - I'm a big Von Trier fan, but I still haven't seen this one (or any of his early ones other than The Element of Crime)

The Piano Teacher
Apocalypse Now
Vivre sa vie - gonna throw another Godard on here. This one in particular, because the blu-ray for it is sitting in my apartment.

Z
Bad Education - I like the Almodovars I've seen and I've been meaning to see this one for a while, but I just never got around to it.

Fitzcarraldo
Spartacus
The Elephant Man
Three Colors Trilogy
Stalker
Belle de jour
The Thin Blue Line - There's kind of a lack of American movies on this list, and I also need some more Errol Morris under my belt. The only Morris film I've seen is Gates of Heaven. I picked this one in particular because it's on Netflix Instant.

Downfall
The Birth of a Nation - The length on this one is a tad discouraging. I haven't watched any other silents that are quite this long. I'm also worried the movie will piss me off, so that makes the length even more discouraging. It's pretty much the most "canon" film period, though, so I do still want to see it.

Welcome to the Dollhouse
Man with a Movie Camera - I had actually never heard of this until I came upon it on the Internet Archive a few years ago. It looks intriguing, but I do kind of worry that I won't really "get" it.

Babel - I've seen Amores perros and this one's gotten some really good (and some less good) reactions

Scenes from a Marriage
El Topo
Shoot the Piano Player - I love Truffaut and have seen several of his films, and love the French New Wave in general, so I'll throw this one in here.

Breathless
Pink Flamingos
Do the Right Thing
La dolce vita - I've seen quite a few Fellinis, but not this one yet.

Audition
Ali: Fear Eats the Soul
Berlin Alexanderplatz - Since people seem to be taking the jump on this, I guess I'll throw my hat into it. I'm expecting the length will make me want to kill myself at least once or twice during it.

I am the math man.

dotCommunism you can watch Berlin Alexanderplatz, I really enjoyed it.

I can see why Arkane said this should be seen in Hi Def, but the DVD is pretty good. It looks stunning at times and the Philip Glass fits the film like a glove. Definitely something worth experiencing.

Updated list:

America, America There's a Cahiers du cinéma top 100 films list out there and I have only this one left, which I would have a hard time making myself watch otherwise. A Kazan film about the American dream that's 3 hours long, that really doesn't sound very interesting but who knows.

Beau Travail I've never seen anything from Claire Denis, this sounds like a good place to start.

Europa '51 Another highly regarded Italian director I'm kind of meh on, but it does have Ingrid Bergman.

Lilja 4-ever I'm under the impression this is very depressing but very good.

Taegukgi hwinalrimyeo A Korean war film that's really highly rated on Imdb, hadn't watched it beacuase I thought it was long but two and a half hours doesn't seem that long now.

The Testament of Dr. Mabuse Let's what trouble he gets into with sound.

Sanxia haoren Apparently this is one of the best films of the last 10 years.

Pelle the Conqueror It's Swedish and won an Oscar, I think it's a sad film.

Fear and Desire I have a fear that this will be as terrible as I've heard, but also a desire to complete Kubrick's features.

The Cove Let's give docs another try.

For the hell of it, here's what I've seen so far:

One can hardly ignore the Taoist implications of "Fuck it, Dude. Let's go bowling."

PeacefulAnarchy, I'm gonna tell you that Fear and Desire really is pretty awful. Kubrick was right to try to hide it. I'm not saying don't watch it, but I am saying that the lower you set expectations, the less you'll find yourself giggling at how shockingly bad it is. Here's what I said about it when I saw it:

quote:

Thanks to the Belcourt, I got a chance to see Stanley Kubrick's extremely rare first film projected on a big screen, and, well...let's just say that Kubrick was right to suppress it. The vast majority of problems come from the script, which is alternately hilariously redundant and insanely pretentious, most notably in the long voiceovers which go far beyond any normal definition of incomprehensible. As for the direction...Kubrick likened the movie to a kid playing with crayons, and I think that's a good way to look at it - it's a director experimenting with different things, and seeing what works. Unfortunately, the vast majority of them don't work, in any way...but there are glimpses here and there of a vision beginning to emerge. I can't recommend it in any way, but as a Kubrick fan and a film buff, I don't regret watching it at all, just for the experience.

Aiiiii
Just finished watching Citizen Kane. Such a brilliant film in almost every way. Brilliant story, direction, acting, lighting, sound. Surprised to learn it flopped on release and yet is now widely regarded as one of the best films ever. Makes you wonder which one of the modern flops will be venerated in 60 years time.

Although I already knew who Rosebud was I really don't think it spoilt the film at all. In fact, I wouldn't necessarily regard the answer as a spoiler, really. It doesn't take anything away from the experience.

I always seem to come back to this just in time to recommend a film I've never heard of to Peaceful Anarchy so you get Taegukgi hwinalrimyeo because it looks like you chased a spider off your keyboard.

Citizen Kane
The Wild Bunch - I like the sound of movies about groups of flawed characters. Expect this to be replaced with Kelly's Heroes or The Dirty Dozen after I've watched it.

Lemon Curry?
Mikewozere, you shall watch The Wild Bunch.

OK, I'll give this a shot.

1. Lawrence of Arabia is on everyone' list but I have to put it on mine because it's the one movie that I can think of that I've been meaning to watch for over 10 years and just haven't done it for one reason or another.

2. All Quiet on the Western Front: When I was in high school I went through classic war movie phase but never got around to this one.

3. Jacob's Ladder: I already know how it ends so I've never bothered. I think I've also heard mixed things about it.

4. A Few Good Men: Always thought it seemed ridiculous and forgettable because people kept quoting that one line but I keep hearing people saying that it's great.

5. Solaris: Saw the Clooney remake and thought it was terrible so I never saw the original, even though it's apparently great.

6. Dr. Zhivago: I'm ashamed to say that I don't even know what it's about. I just know it's one of those movies you're supposed to watch.

7. The Elephant Man: David Lynch is kind of hit or miss with me (loved Blue Velvet, hated Lost Highway for example) but I've heard this is good and always mean to see more of his movies. Edit: Looks like this isn't available on Netflix for some reason? Oh well, I'll replace it with something else.

7. Eraserhead: See Above.

8. One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest: Just never grabbed my interest despite having seen it referenced approximately 1 billion times.

9. Oldboy: I've seen this recommended a lot on these forums and it seems like the sort of dark psychological movie that I'd find interesting.

10. 8 1/2: I've been kind of interested ever since it was referred to in Ghost World, but never enough to actually pick it up. Also never seen any Fellini and apparently you are supposed to.

So, where to start?

watched:
#80 Some Like It Hot - I didn't feel this was as flawless as some of the other Billy Wilder movies I've seen. About 3/4 through the movie when Lemmon really starts getting into the Daphne role was when it got funny. Maracas etc.
And the final line is one of the funniest I can recall maybe second only to "They live."

New List:

#15 Seven Samurai - I saw the Magnificent Seven many years ago on VHS and have avoided repetition (even though this is the original, seminal work.)

#53 The Pianist - When this came out I didn't feel like seeing yet another WWII movie (I must've seen at least ten that year.) Since then I have forgotten about watching it.

#55 To Kill a Mockingbird - I've read the book and I've sat through multiple tiresome discussions on it in the classroom. I may have actually seen all of this but definitely not in one session.

#67 The Treasure of the Sierra Madre - I know it has the famous "badges" quote. That alone hasn't been persuading enough to make me watch it.

#68 City Lights - Almost rented this once and then I went back later to get it and the copy inexplicably disappeared never to return.

#72 The Prestige - I heard about this being good but I've developed a jaded skepticism over the years about most highly rated new movies because frankly they usually don't deliver. Maybe if it's reached this high it's worth a look.

#78 Inglourious Basterds - The trailer seemed like a giant farcical mess. And Pitt's accent during that "killing nazis" scene has been enough to hold me off on this for a year so far.

#79 Singin' in the Rain - I rarely seek out musicals. That song is like kryptonite to me.

#84 Cinema Paradiso - Seen it cutdown a lot in this thread. I've been saving this for a rainy day.

#85 Up - Seems like another cutesy kids movie that I won't like. After enjoying movies like Toy Story and A Bug's Life I developed a healthy aversion to CGI at some point. Looking back I think Shrek was the turning point that made me ill towards CGI in general. I like the more traditional animated movies.

I've only really seen this and Basterds, and it's really a hit or miss movie depending on the style of comedy you like. So instead of putting a potential dud on you, I'll put this since it's a very solid movie. One of the better WWII movies I've watched (although about half of what I've watched came from this thread).

Saving Private Ryan is yet another riveting WWII story (I guess it's the theme of this post now). While not on par with Schindler's List it's also not really comparable since it's a different perspective and genre really. The action scenes are about as well done as they possibly could be. Plus the use of sound might be the best I can remember in a movie. I felt a little disconnect with some of the side characters though, but overall it's an incredible movie probably 9/10 on my scale.

marioinblack posted:

1. Casablanca
Aliens
The Great Escape - I guess I'll use this to throw movies in more of an action type mold together. Although this movie may be loosely using the term, still don't know why I've never seen it.

2. Citizen Kane
To Kill a Mockingbird - I've seen a few bits but never the entire thing.

3. Rear Window - I haven't seen a Hitchcock movie in a long long time.

4. A Clockwork Orange
Dr. Strangelove - Might as well throw another Kubrick out there.

5. Goodfellas
Raging Bull - I'll have to put another Scorsese film on here since I enjoyed Goodfellas so much.

6. Godfather Part I
Godfather Part II
On the Waterfront - I guess I've thrown a Brando one out there already, might as well do another.

7. Wall-E
Ratatouille - To continue the Pixar spree.

8. Chinatown
One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest
The Shawshank Redemption
Schindler's List
The Green Mile - Keeping with a 90s trend here.

9. 12 Angry Men
Mr. Smith Goes to Washington - The only James Stewart movie I've seen is It's a Wonderful Life, which I regard highly.

10. Gone With the Wind
Do the Right Thing
Back to the Future
Saving Private Ryan
Apocalypse Now - Keeping with a war theme.
