Yeah, I've seen plenty of drawbridges, but nothing that lifts a gate through those sliding bricks. It's always just something that holds the gate in place, like this.

Probably, but it's not very castle-y, and again there's no real obvious mechanism for how the door lifts. I want something the minifigs can lift without praying for help from the Creator (me).

I tried using a winch and hook, but the gate doesn't really balance right inside the sliding bricks, and a single point of contact makes the gate list to one side and get stuck. I could try two winches in tandem, but I'm not sure how to synchronize them without blocking the entryway in the first place.

Are there any Castle sets with these sliding groove pieces that actually use a mechanism for raising/lowering the gate? I want to put one in my current project, but I want it to work on a principle other than "the giant hand of God reaches down and opens the gate for us."

The new King's Castle uses the same pieces for its gate raising mechanism. This gate slides into those grooved bricks on either side, and is raised using a fairly clever use of this thing where its bars actually key into the holes in the gate like a gear. They also built in a little stop to keep the gate up, but there's actually enough tension built in to hold it as-is.

Also, look what came in at the Lego Store today:

If I get around to building it today, I'll post some highlights, but here's one definite highlight for now:

I plan on being a medical entomologist for a living, just need to finish undergrad, and I've got things far, far worse than the hottentotta (androctonus and tityus)

I started putting LEGO sets in my spider cages because it is adorable to watch a large spider walk over the toy story jeep and sit in the back. The Spartans might go into a scorpion tank I have in my bedroom, or maybe some knights.

It is funny that I've had several conversations online and off about using LEGO pieces to make dioramas in tanks.

I had three big sets as a kid, all of them from my Aunt. The Sonar Transmitting Cruiser, one of the first electrified brick systems. My favorite set as a kid.
Then I got the 1990 Space Shuttle, which was pretty cool. Finally, and what I remember as the last set she ever got me, was Ice Station Odyssey. I entered my dark ages not long after.
My best friend had the Mega Core Magnetizer, but he moved. It was the second old set I purchased after I left my dark ages, after the SP1 Mission Commander I bought on a whim at BrickCon last year. I always did want one of the space monorails, but I'm not a big enough fan to pay the premiums on them now.

I'm still very much learning about bugs, but if you have any questions, go to the megathread in PI.

Because of the talk, I sat down to build a sand miner for a desert scorpion cage.

I may have overshot the size I can fit in a cage. I dub it "Carnegie's Wonder Miner"

The topmost level has a survey droid, the main crane, the ship owner and his....friend, most of the crew and guards, and some dredging gear in the back. In the middle are the two drivers, and the rest/storage room in the back. On the bottom are the main worker droids, as being that close to the sand can be far to dangerous for a human worker.

(crappy) top shot

The drivers

Side shot, with the crane down carrying a rock

Back shot, with specialist diver in resting room, and some dredging gear down

Other side, view of worker droids

I don't like the legs, but I really don't have many LEGO pieces to work with.

I wasn't sure if you are going for exactly 20 studs long for the entire vehicle, or 20 studs between where the ends of the tracks are mounted (as pictured). For the one in the pic, it takes 66 links minimum, but that's binding the gears, and 67 links is too loose. Hope that helps!

Bad rear end. I can deal with the gears binding, either by having the track slack (half the reason why most tanks have the drive wheels at the back) or by doing something like putting a 2 hole 1x2 at the end of the beam.

well I oh
My husband and I went to a Toys R Us in Toms River, NJ, mostly just looking for anything for the buy 2 get 1 free deal since we gave up all hope of finding series 2 minifigures, but on our way out we stopped at guest services and they had a brand new box of minifigures right there on the desk. :neckbeard: We asked the girl if there was a limit and she said it was at their discretion, so we got 10 (didn't really wanna push it) and left. It seemed to be part of the deal, too, since it only came to $22 and change even though it was priced at $2.99 each.

We also liberated my step-brothers' Lego the other day. The amount of dust on the storage bin was enough to choke out a small child, but it was worth it. Some of the manuals date to 1992-1994 and there were 20-some minifigures all staring at us with those classic, soulless eyes.

I loving love Lego.
