Any good bands the thread could recommend?

While I'm at it, I've found the songs from Dethklok's Dethalbums to be amazingly good, even when Small's trying to be more serious in the second album. Any... whatever the hell the group's classified as that could be suggested?

Try these if you haven't already:

Symphony X - Paradise Lost & The Odyssey
Riverside - Second Life Syndrome & Anno High Definition
Pain of Salvation - Perfect Element & Remedy Lane
Into Eternity - Buried In Oblivion
And of course, any Opeth really. Except maybe Damnation and Deliverance (although Damnation is good in its own right)

So, I just realized that I listen to too much Portuguese punk. Bands like Reação adversa, Noção de Nada, Kaos 64, Tropa Suicida, Inkisição, Dias de um futuro de esquicido, Eu Serei a Hiena (not technically punk I guess?), etc. Anyways I'd like to get more spanish punk though, since I'll be going abroad next summer and wanting to immerse myself in the language, having plenty of music I like in the appropriate language would also be pretty cool and a big help. So I'm looking for bands like some of those portuguese/brasilian ones, or like some of the spanish bands I already listen to, So for like, similar styles:

Ska-p I love a lot, eurosis was alright but, que corra la voz and planeta eskoria are astounding albums. La Vela Puerca's harder stuff is alright. Boikot is pretty decent. I love Na' Que Ver and their albums No Mirar Atras and Asi Estamos. Decision Final I'm okay on. Not a big fan of straight edge but they're not bad. Sin Dios is pretty cool I've only heard Solidaridad, Odio al Imperio and Recortes de Libertad. Along that line the Execradores split with them was good, but I haven't been able to find anything by the Execradores besides A luta! so yeah. I also listened to Buena Pelea's Primer Round at a friend's place and didn't hate it. So huh. i guess I like mostly spanish Ska Punk? But I like other punk too, just had a lot of exposure to Ska-Punk for spanish bands.

Never really did get a response to this. Would be helpful

Please don't recommend Philip Glass or any soundtracks from movies.

A friend asked me about a recommendation and I've been thinking about it for a bit but I'm not sure where to go here. He asked me where he could branch out from by giving me Orbital - Halycon + On + On.

I'm not entirely certain where to go - The Orb, early Aphex Twin, Seefeel, System 7, Global Communication, Biosphere? I guess basically ambient techno, but I can't really find the middle ground between really ambient techno and the sort-of ambient techno with a hard 4/4 and rather catch.

I would recommend the album Far Away Trains Passing By by Ulrich Schnauss.

They're both chill out electronic music. I don't pretend to know a lot about the genres of electronic music, but I love the track Halcyon + on + on and I love the songs on Far Away Trains Passing By for the same reason. They're long, they build slowly, and by the end the parts just culminate into something that I can only describe as beautiful.

I don't mind them, but you're right in that they have a very specific sound. I think they're mostly similar to British '80s reggae and some American stuff, Jamaican stuff from the period sounds quite different. Check out the comp "Don't Call Us Immigrants", Misty In Roots' "Live at Counter Eurovision" and a few samplers from the NYC based Wackie's label.

Also I make weird connections between 'unrelated to other people' music apparently.

As far as early 80s music like Unlimited Touch, you're probably looking more for the vague non-genre of "post-disco" more than "funk." Check out the blog Beat Electric if you want crate-dug type stuff (and it'll definitely fulfill your "lot of synth" criteria). You might also be interested in basically everything Roy Ayers breathed on in that decade (might be a bit too disco though):

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1XgCU4bRzdQ

Unrelated, and I swear this song has nothing to do with that one despite having the same title (this is an earlier 70s group I like a lot, no synths here sorry):

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aqlq0za7M48

god drat that song just has the sickest break ever aaaaaaaaa

Also check out any compilations Salsoul released that have "funk" in the name, there's a near-certain chance they're incredible

edit: just before anyone jumps on my back for not listing off the classic 70s stuff like james brown betty davis the meters sly stone, there you go, but I wanted to show you some synth stuff that is admittedly way more obscure than any of the ones I just listed.

edit edit: oh, you really need Herbie Hancock but you probably have that already.
