As far as early 80s music like Unlimited Touch, you're probably looking more for the vague non-genre of "post-disco" more than "funk." Check out the blog Beat Electric if you want crate-dug type stuff (and it'll definitely fulfill your "lot of synth" criteria). You might also be interested in basically everything Roy Ayers breathed on in that decade (might be a bit too disco though):

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1XgCU4bRzdQ

Unrelated, and I swear this song has nothing to do with that one despite having the same title (this is an earlier 70s group I like a lot, no synths here sorry):

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aqlq0za7M48

god drat that song just has the sickest break ever aaaaaaaaa

Also check out any compilations Salsoul released that have "funk" in the name, there's a near-certain chance they're incredible

edit: just before anyone jumps on my back for not listing off the classic 70s stuff like james brown betty davis the meters sly stone, there you go, but I wanted to show you some synth stuff that is admittedly way more obscure than any of the ones I just listed.

edit edit: oh, you really need Herbie Hancock but you probably have that already.

I know the classics fairly well, so I guess I was looking for the more obscure cuts. And I got no problem with disco at all, but same with funk, I dig the synthier Hi-NRG and Italo sounds.

A friend asked me about a recommendation and I've been thinking about it for a bit but I'm not sure where to go here. He asked me where he could branch out from by giving me Orbital - Halycon + On + On.

I'm not entirely certain where to go - The Orb, early Aphex Twin, Seefeel, System 7, Global Communication, Biosphere? I guess basically ambient techno, but I can't really find the middle ground between really ambient techno and the sort-of ambient techno with a hard 4/4 and rather catch.

Maybe atmospheric dnb such as LTJ Bukem? Different genre but i get the same kind of feelings from Halycon as Atlantis, and maybe some of Goldie's stuff from the same period. Or prehaps some 90s Underworld tracks would fit the bill. This kind of trance gives me the same kind of feeling too although the synths sound dated now, the breakdowns in some of these tracks are very atmospheric:

Velocity - Lust (Rabbit in the Moon Remix)

Got acid parts, breakbeat part, orchestral breakdown at 5:50. Personally i think it's amazing but maybe it's too different of a style that he wouldn't like.

Seriously, "probably"? Really?

Try Loop Guru - Amrita and Fluke - Risotto maybe.

Okay, hands up my post wasn't well written, and 'ambient' and 'techno' are really clouded terms, but it was a genuine recommendation based on the work of the artists listed that I've owned music by. With hindsight it was pretty off base and not well thought out. Sorry.

Well if u want some more obscure synth heavy 80s funk just type in an obscure cut in youtube and you can browse that users vids to your hearts content.

A few noteworthy compilations if thats too much of a bother:

Recommend me grunge. Any grunge. I don't mind if it's your local grogged up band that played 3 shows down at Shooters in '94 (as long as I can reasonably get a hold of the music, that is).

Bonus if you give opinions about the style of the band, their best albums, what to avoid, etc. Comparisons are great.

That's really tough without any indication of what you know and like, or what you don't like at least. I'm going to assume you already know and like Nirvana, Soundgarden, Pearl Jam, Alice in Chains and so on and so forth. I don't know a lot of obscure stuff here, my personal favorites include Bush, Screaming Trees and some of Jerry Cantrell's solo stuff. Also had a short period with Black Stone Cherry.

Personally I've just run into the track "The Test" by Chemical Brothers and I absolutely love it(http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QDe6MZQjpho), but after listening through all their other stuff I only found one or two other songs I like and nowhere near as good. Other stuff this reminds me of that I like, which may or may not help suggestions: UNKLE - Keys to the kingdom, Parov Stelar - Autumn Beasts.

Grunge is a pretty vague term. Grunge was basically just a term for the seattle sound of the late 80s/early 90s so you could be talking anything from almost glam metal/LA metal like Malfunkshun (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=REPhA79yOEk), to Riot Grrl punk like The Gits (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NfrhLEQ8c9c)

I'm sure someone else can recommend some really boring and beatless ambient/dub techno like those three LPs (Steingarten is a poo poo record too, but the remix album is FIRE), but I think you should check out the Basic Channel comp, BCD (1), which is totally the zenith of that syle. Apart from that, you should enjoy basically everything on Chain Reaction records, guys like Vladislav Delay, Vainqueur and Porter Ricks have done a poo poo ton of that kinda stuff.

e: oh, am I loving dumb or what??? "Creepy dub" = Rhythm & Sound! Particularly the instrumental records. And check out Luomo's Vocalcity while you're at it, it's dubby, and altough not alll that similar to Pole, basically the best album ever.

The meaning of 'dubstep' has changed a lot over the past 10 years, from the early stuff being basically dark 2 step UK garage, to the mid-decade halfstep stuff, to now, where the people making the music most informed by the early days of the scene (which Burial very much is) avoid applying the term to themselves. You could start by familiarising yourself with all 7 volumes of Tempa's 'Dubstep Allstars' mix series, that will give you a pretty good understanding of how the scene has developed over the past six years.

Very early dubstep is much more exclusively dance music (rather than both dance music and headphone music as with more recent stuff) and a lot of it sounds kind of formulaic to my ears, but there's some good stuff to be had there too. 'The Roots of Dubstep' compilation on Tempa is worth a listen. Big Apple Records and Tempa are the most significant labels.

'Future garage' or 'future bass' is a term being thrown around now for the more adventurous elements of modern UKG-informed music, pretty much in a rebranding effort now that 'dubstep' has come to mean the kind of stuff you mention in your post in the mainstream consciousness. This is where it really gets interesting IMO:

Compilations:
Future Bass (Soul Jazz)
Worth the Weight - Bristol Dubstep Classics (Punch Drunk)
Deep Medi Releases Volume 1/2 (Deep Medi Musik)
5 Years of Hyperdub (Hyperdub)
Night Slugs Allstars Vol.1 (Night Slugs)

Labels:
Punch Drunk
Hotflush
Hyperdub
Deep Medi Musik
Hessle Audio
Apple Pips
Hemlock Recordings
Skull Disco
Tectonic
Night Slugs

YouTubes:
El B - Buck & Bury
Horsepower Productions - The Swindle
Digital Mystikz - Anti-War Dub
Skream - Midnight Request Line
Loefah - Mud
Mala - New Life Baby Paris
Martyn - Broken
Appleblim & Peverelist - Circling
2562 - Techno Dread
Joy Orbison - Hyph Mngo
Joker - Purple City
James Blake - CMYK
Hyetal & Shortstuff - Ice Cream
Egyptrixx - The Only Way Up
Untold - Just For You
Girl Unit - Wut

Maybe someone more knowledgeable than me can point you in the direction of good mixes to check out depending on which of this stuff you like, although really Google is your best friend here. Also, read the dubstep thread.

So I've been trying to listen to more technoish (not sure this is the correct word to describe it) music lately. I finally came across an album that I absolutely love, but am having a lot of trouble finding anything similar to it. The album is Röyksopp's Junior album. I've tried listening to their other albums, but they just don't do it for me. I've also tried using Pandora and Last.FM, but since I can't specify the album from the band they haven't done me much good. I guess the main thing I like about the album are the nice upbeat songs with the female vocalists. Any input would be greatly appreciated!

I'm looking for some more bluesy stuff to listen to! In terms of the blues, something along the lines of John Lee Hooker and B.B. King, but I'm open to stuff that treads into R&B/Jazz territory. (Ray Charles as the prime example) In terms of blues-rock, modern is what I'm after, like The Whites Stripes' 'De Stijl' and 'Get Behind Me Satan', and The Black Keys' 'Thickfreakness'. Some of Stevie Ray Vaughan's stuff is good, but the more rockabilly stuff he does is exactly what I'm NOT looking for.

I'm also pretty torn about listening to 'Best of' or compilation albums in general, so unless one is really well done, original albums would be the best! Much appreciated in advanced.

Never was fond of B.B. King or John Lee Hooker. I never felt that they never conveyed the sadness that the blues is supposed to convey, it sounds hokey to me. I am a much bigger fan of the more poorly recorded, sad, swampy, kind of stuff. The songs that sound more reminiscent of slave songs.
