Two part question: I have two VA claims that were rejected that I want reevaluated. Do I have to somehow appeal their decision or can I just refile the claims? One of them they categorized as "muscular strain" when I'm pretty sure it's a spinal/bone issue if that matters. Secondly, is there a dept. in the VA hospital that can help me with my claim? Forget the DAV, the dude that helped me the first time apparently thought he was an armchair doctor instead of just helping me with the paperwork, not to mention generally rude.

I'm currently Army Guard, coming up on 3 years in in April (and more years left). I'm considering attempting to transfer to Air Guard in the semi-near future. The only thing I'm worried about is the bonus I received. I was given the first half of a 20k enlistment bonus upon graduating basic/ait and will be receiving the second half in April 2011. I know that if I were to transfer before then I wouldn't receive it, but would I end up having to pay back what I've been given?

ifire posted:would I end up having to pay back what I've been given? I'm not sure if it works the same, but for Active Duty, they pro-rate what you pay back based on how much money you've received vs. how much time out of that commitment you have served. Let's say you sign up for 4 years to receive 20K in cash, and you break it off after 3 years. You've received all 20K of the bonus, but only served three years out of four committed. You pay back 5K. Out of your tax refund for X years if you have to (like if you were separated but did not qualify for separation pay) In your example, it looks like you haven't even served a whole year, so say you separated at exactly 1 year. You wouldn't receive your 2nd payment, and you'd end up paying something between 0 and less than 10K depending on the length of commitment. 0$ if it was a 2-year commitment, because you served half, or 10K of the bonus worth, and received 10K. Worst case scenario (that I could see) is that you signed on for 5 years of guard, so you basically are credited 4K against your bonus for every year. If you broke at one year, you'd have received 10K, but only served '4K worth', thus owing 6K$ back to Uncle Sam. Hope this makes sense. If you have any questions, feel free to PM me. I've spent 5 years doing S1/finance-related crap.

If you're seeking disability pay, any back pay would be based on the original claim date, which would reset if you were to simply refile. Any additional evidence could be presented with your appeal. Look to see if there's a Vet Center or a CVSO in your area. If you're willing to be more specific with where you are I could help you look. Otherwise check out those sites and find your nearest big city; you can usually call one close by and speak with a claims specialist.

If the DAV was incompetent check with other service organizations, Military Order of the Purple Heart (Do not need to have been a recipient to use their veteran's service), American Legion, VFW, etc. I am 100% disabled now and unable to work (90% plus Individual Unemployable). Welp, I'm back for another question. After learning my Army Guard unit is moving 60+ miles away in the coming months, I have decided that I'm going to try to transfer to the AF. Originally I was just going to try to go Air Guard but after reading the Civilian thread and promptly disregarding everything in it I've been flirting with the idea of going active AF. I have 3 years in the guard as Infantry. Anyone know how feasible it would be?

The AF is only taking priors under a critical jobs list, and infantry is probably not one of them. http://www.airforce.com/contact-us/faq/prior-service/ quote:You must hold an AFSC, MOS, or NEC, which will qualify, or directly convert to an Air Force Specialty. I saw that but also saw on a few non-official sites starting that the AF considers only those who've served 24 months on active duty as "prior service" and less than that as "previous service" who are processed differently. It's probably just me getting my hopes up though. http://usmilitary.about.com/od/joiningthemilitary/a/priorservice.htm I would copy/paste the relevant section but I'm on my phone and it is failing me. EDIT: Now that I'm home, I can post the stuff: quote:The Air Force defines "prior service" as persons who have served at least 24 months of Active Duty service without regard to regular component or continuous service in the Armed Forces. Individuals with less than 24 months of Active Duty are considered "previous service." Previous service personnel are classified and processed the same as non-prior service, with the exception that they must have a qualifying RE Code (or receive a waiver) on their DD Form 214. However, even though "previous service" applicants are classified and tracked as non-prior service, it's still a separate enlistment program under the Air Force recruiting regulation, and the Air Force can choose to accept or reject "previous service" applicants, depending on their current recruiting needs. I haven't asked a totally inane question in a while. What do people that go to basic in early january do about their taxes? I feel like there's not a lot of time to do accounting work in basic/AIT. More relevant question: I have a long training cycle, and my car is kind of crappy. Should I sell it now and worry about getting one when I have a real duty station, or will I have use for it before then?

Unless you are married, and opt to live off post while in AIT or have an EXCEPTIONALLY long AIT then your car will be pretty much useless unless you just want ninja use it. I had a few buddies who did that because you're not allowed to have a car unless you fall into those two categories. I'm not sure how long your AIT has to be to qualify for a car but in my branch 25S have 26 weeks of training. I just called a Sierra friend of mine and he says anything over 20 weeks you are allowed to use a car after you phase up, and are generally squared away.

Thanks. I know some servers won't accept Hotmail, and when I Googled it, all I got was stuff about the Navy blocking a bunch of email servers due to potential Opsec while on deployment in 2007. Since I'm trying to reach someone in the Army, who, afaik, isn't deployed...made me wonder if I need to work on my patience or if Hotmail was actually the problem. Guess it's the patience.

Does anyone know how long DLAB scores are good for? I ask because I got separated from the Navy while at RTC due to medical problems. I plan on returning when I'm eligible for reenlistment in 6 months, and I'm really hoping I won't have to take the test again when they draw up my new CTI contract. Seriously, that test is loving awful.
