Next couple of years? Newspaper rags will be around for a lot longer than that. Especially if 30% of the country is full of the type of ignorant cunts who do nothing but read The Sun and watch Sky News.

I thought those had by FAR the most "soul", they were the ones that were most about the characters and least about some massive external conflict, or feedline-punchline type jokes. Not that I dislike 3-6, but it's like it's two shows; 1 and 2 is a character based sitcom in space, 3-6 is a more jokey sci-fi sitcom with some crazy plot elements, and 7+ doesn't exist because it was never made.

Nearly went back to edit that to 1 to 5, but didn't because as you say 1 & 2 are basically a different show. Didn't seem to make sense to say 'capture the soul of these things, with two distinct souls'.

I like the concept of 1-2 a lot, especially the visuals of the set design and props, 2 executing things a lot better as you do with experience.
But 3-5 is better made, and I wonder if they could have gotten the same quality without becoming the more generic sci-fi setting that it did. The concept was quite self limiting in that they either have to get to Earth or give up. And there's the problem with introducing any sort of story without bringing in other characters, even as guests, which chips away at the isolation they're supposed to have.

For them to vanish, there needs to be an outright eradication of my parents' generation. My parents are in their 50's just now, so that's about another 20 years or so.

You're massively overestimating the reach/influence of non-printed news saturation throughout the UK. Granted, from our generation onwards there's obviously going to be a steady decline, but there are a lot of older people in the country who will still buy newspapers until they day they die.

Newspapers and tabloids will still be here well after 10 years from now and even if they arent, their replacements in the form of TV news/stations/networks will still be preaching the same bollocks for decades to come.

I thought it was interesting Lia said it was Mitchells destiny to die at the hands of a werewolf, and then said later on their had been a lot of unexpected arrivals, which suggests either some people have a destiny, or that people are expected to die on certain dates but can be killed earlier.

Not to mention that if you pay attention to the news you can actually see the biased subtext.

Nick whatshisface from the BBC, for example, is a die hard Tory supporter and it shows immensely in his "non biased" ploitical reports. Same thing with Sky news.

On top of that, it only takes one 20 minute scan of the news headlines online to see the things the news stations here aren't reporting on which, in turn, shows a higher level of bias because for a lot of people finding out news from tabloids/TV is the only way they care to.

If they had no discernible taste and only parroted what the tastemakers chose, surely only cool dude stuff would win?

For the record: N Dubz last single peaked at number 18 in the singles chart.

For me, I like them both because they're different, and I do fail to understand people who think the show would be better without the first two series, because the later stuff doesn't work nearly as well without those first two years of really establishing the characters properly.

I do also think you're slightly selling the later years short in terms of character focus. S3 has Marooned (duh), but it's also got Timeslides (which contains some good exploration of Lister and Rimmer's pasts) and The Last Day. S4 has two episodes with great focus on Kryten (Camille and DNA) and three for Rimmer (Dimension Jump, Justice and Meltdown). S5 has Holoship and Terrorform, both about Rimmer. S6 had rather less, but even S7 had a try with Duct Soup and Blue.

There was certainly less of it about, but it's definitely still there.

By the way, here is why Wikipedia is brilliant

While this is true, and I considered mentioning Marooned, The "second half" episodes (season 3-6) feel quite different from the "first half" episodes (1-2) even when exploring the same characters. Early period Rimmer especially feels a lot more of a rounded out character than the slightly more charicature-ish later stuff. I find the drunken breakdown in Thanks for the Memory to be *genuinely* touching;

...

That was going to be our song. But I never found anyone to share it with. So now it's just MY song.

The 3-6 character stuff just doesn't get me on that level, it's all a little less raw, a little more structured like a joke.

You're right though, different or not there IS some great character stuff in the latter seasons, especially for Kryten (Last Day, DNA and Camille). The two halves are both great in their own ways.

Those were pretty good, but my favourite series was definitely series 4. There were a lot of episodes that were better overall, but that series had all my favourite bits, from the confrontation with the simulant in Justice, to Lister's description of the firing squad in Meltdown, the discussion of the White Hole, and Ace Rimmer's first scene. Those were pretty good, but my favourite series was definitely series 4.
