I like the concept of 1-2 a lot, especially the visuals of the set design and props, 2 executing things a lot better as you do with experience. But 3-5 is better made, and I wonder if they could have gotten the same quality without becoming the more generic sci-fi setting that it did. The concept was quite self limiting in that they either have to get to Earth or give up. And there's the problem with introducing any sort of story without bringing in other characters, even as guests, which chips away at the isolation they're supposed to have.

For them to vanish, there needs to be an outright eradication of my parents' generation. My parents are in their 50's just now, so that's about another 20 years or so. You're massively overestimating the reach/influence of non-printed news saturation throughout the UK. Granted, from our generation onwards there's obviously going to be a steady decline, but there are a lot of older people in the country who will still buy newspapers until they day they die. Newspapers and tabloids will still be here well after 10 years from now and even if they arent, their replacements in the form of TV news/stations/networks will still be preaching the same bollocks for decades to come.

I thought it was interesting Lia said it was Mitchells destiny to die at the hands of a werewolf, and then said later on their had been a lot of unexpected arrivals, which suggests either some people have a destiny, or that people are expected to die on certain dates but can be killed earlier.

On top of that, it only takes one 20 minute scan of the news headlines online to see the things the news stations here aren't reporting on which, in turn, shows a higher level of bias because for a lot of people finding out news from tabloids/TV is the only way they care to.

I do also think you're slightly selling the later years short in terms of character focus. S3 has Marooned (duh), but it's also got Timeslides (which contains some good exploration of Lister and Rimmer's pasts) and The Last Day. S4 has two episodes with great focus on Kryten (Camille and DNA) and three for Rimmer (Dimension Jump, Justice and Meltdown). S5 has Holoship and Terrorform, both about Rimmer. S6 had rather less, but even S7 had a try with Duct Soup and Blue. There was certainly less of it about, but it's definitely still there. By the way, here is why Wikipedia is brilliant

Don't get me wrong - there's lots of amazing bits in all sorts of episodes but for me both of those two are just constant streams of good bits. So I'm watching the third episode of Episodes, and it's okay enough and I'm perfectly willing to give it half an hour of my week (even though I'm not really a fan of Tamsin Grieg or Stephen Mangan), but something about the title sequence really, really annoys me and I can't quite put my finger on it.
