Does anyone know of a good portable USB keyboard, preferably with solid decent height keys and for less than ~$70? I'm looking to have something to use with Illustrator on a tablet PC. Since it's really just needed for the modifier keys and a few letters, the half keyboard form factor would be perfect if it weren't so expensive. Anything that has a realistic form factor and that is programmable works too.

So far I've only managed to find some potential products like a Logitech G13 Gameboard or a Targus foldable keyboard.

Any idea when elitekeyboards is going to be stocking the new boards made by the same guy who made the filco boards? I want a cherry blue board, but the Filcos are all discontinued.

A Realforce would be nice too, but not for $265.

I have read that the release date for the Leopold is late February. I don't have the time to pull up a quote, but that is the buzz on geekhack.

I use my arc keyboard every single day, even with my desktop. Best keyboard I've ever typed on, apart from the arrow keys.

I did this same exact thing a while ago. I used a Wii Remote mapped with Joy2Key until I bought a wireless apple keyboard. If you already have a Wii Remote (or PSMove, I suppose) you could just get a BT adapter and a joypad mapping program.

I was just about to buy this, but the Amazon reviews say the shift key is sluggish in the sense that when you Capitalize STuff, it capitalizes two letters. Does anyone here have it and can comment on it?

Mine did that for the first month then in broke in or something, doesn't do it anymore. I like having the trackpoint but right after I bought it Firefox updated and broke support for scrolling with it :saddowns: It still works in everything else, I don't know what Firefox's problem is. There's even a hack for it in about :config that doesn't work anymore.

I have one and the keys are AMAZING. The layout is great also, but it takes a little while to get used to. The keyboard I came from was a G15 and this is a dramatic improvement.

I have heard the lite version uses some pretty crappy keys and is nothing like the real hhkb.

But if I could do it again I think I would go for the realforce 87key. The size of the hhkb is cool and awesome, but the fact that the page up down, etc keys are hidden behind the function button is a downside to me. Now other people say its an advantage because they can use all the buttons on the keyboard without taking their hands off it. It all depends on how you use the keyboard IMO.

Any topre based keyboard is going to be amazing

I have topres and cherry browns, and my Filco just sits in the closet. I think I'll take it to work eventually. Cherry browns are easier to type accurately on than rubber domes, but I just don't like the way they feel. It's like there is no resistance except for a sloppy grating plastic mechanism in each key that is supposed to be the tactile feedback.

The Realforce 87UB is pretty much perfect. Solid, flawless construction. Nice feedback. Each key activates at exactly the same level, way before the key bottoms out. I will say the "feedback" feels much more like a sturdy rubber dome, which it is, than say a spring or plastic mechanism. If you are looking for a click, then forget about it.

I picked up a Rosewill Cherry from Amazon (same base price, but cheaper shipping). I have to echo that the keyboard is pretty solid and is pleasurable to type on. The blue LEDs are incredibly bright and illuminate my ceiling, I drew on them with an erasable marker and the added opacity toned that down.

I switched over from my model M for this board. I like typing on the M better, but the form factor, windows key, and lower noise are great pros. I couldn't deal without clicks at all, and this board clicks just enough. I am hitting the keys very hard still, but I figure I will train myself out of that and my experience will improve to where I'd keep it as my preferred board.

The Belkin n52 as mentioned would be a pretty good choice. It even has it's own scroll wheel which you could map to changing layers in Illustrator, and you can map the d-pad to pan around the artboard. I used the n52-te with Photoshop for a while to change brush sizes and then have all my custom shortcuts mapped to the other keys. I don't know about the regular n52 but the te edition has 3 different states you can switch between to essentially have 3x the amount of keys available to you.

If you actually want it to be portable you may want to find a device similar to the N52 that isn't so bulbous and oddly shaped. It's comfortable to use for extended periods of time but won't fit nicely in any bag.

The Happy Hacker keyboard looks nice, but I'm probably going to go with the Solidtek KB-595BU or the Adesso AKB-110B. I wasn't aiming for Tiger Direct, but they're both decent-size and relatively cheap. I'd like to go for the gaming devices, but the price tag is a bit exhorbitant for something that will probably never get any gaming use!

I have. I buy keyboards more for typing, but I've never felt put-off by having an ergonomic for gaming. Key decals will wear off with heavy use, and I actually started wearing a hole in the S key, but a nice e-mail to Microsoft asking about keycap replacements led them to just send me a new board.

I had forgotten how clicky the spacebar was at first. You might find it a little distracting until it's broken in a bit.

I have the non-ultimate, and it's loving awesome. I went from a 10$ cheapo to that, so it was a huge upgrade for me. I'd say you won't be disappointed (I have yet to run into a situation where the lack of NKRO has been a problem), as they're the same keyboard, the ultimate just has led's/more poo poo soldered onto the controller pcb.

I just got mine in. HOLY GOD MECHANICAL KEYS. Seriously, I wasn't expecting this much of a difference! LEDs in every key is a really nice touch. Despite it being a "gaming" product, it doesn't look gaudy or anything. I'm afraid this keyboard is going to spoil me.

I bought a Compaq MX 11800 on eBay for $20 after shipping a few weeks ago. I quite like it so far. It's a really cheap way to experience Cherry Browns. After using it for a while I think I would prefer Blues for a full price keyboard since I still bottom out the Browns fairly often. I switched from an original Saitek Eclipse and it's a huge change. The original Eclipse is unbelievably squishy.

Are you gaming more or typing more? The layout images of the 6gv2 are what made me get the blackwidow (gently caress giant L-shaped enter keys :spergin:). Also, cherry black keys are supposedly harder to type on as they take more weight to actuate.

I really like my blackwidow. Took a little getting used to the slight shift from center vs my old keyboard because of the macro keys, but nothing major. I still bottom out a bit, but it's because I'm still getting used to typing without having to mash down the keys because my membrane kb was wearing out.

edit: It's also fairly glossy on the trim, but just using a microfiber dusting cloth every now and then keeps it just fine. Just don't expect to be fingerprint free with it, ever.

I would use it for equal amounts of time. I like the minimalistic design of the 6gv2 but really I care more about functionality. Are there any other inexpensive mechanical keyboards i should consider? Everyone talks very highly of the blackwidow.

You can get a Blackwidow for ~75 shipped from amazon. The adesso has a few more features (usb hub and audio passthrough), if those actually matter to you. Seems like the adesso weighs about as much as the blackwidow, if not a little less.

I think the non-ultimate BW is best bang for your buck for a straight mechanical keyboard (and the ultimate is probably as well for illuminated keys). They are pretty drat solid in build, and hefty. Blue switches are more meant for typing, but I've not had a single problem in gaming (mostly wow/tf2 on pc).

How's the software? I read a review that said while it was able to switch profiles based on the application in focus, it didn't switch back to a default profile after that program was exited. Is that a big deal or is the default profile a keypress away?

I haven't used to software for much other than making crafting macros for wow. I was more aiming for a solid mechanical kb that didn't feel like poo poo to type on. That I got macro buttons was just a side bonus.

The macro recording is easy enough, fairly intuitive editing after recording (though could be better). I think one of the fn buttons switches profiles for you.

So, I was given a Das Keyboard Ultimate as a present for Christmas, and it's really nice. Like, I love typing now. But, small problem, I recently have fallen out of love with the blank keys. I would really like to have them, but it's most definitely outside of their 30 day return policy -- but I was hoping maybe I could swap it for a Professional version?

Okay, this seems like a really dumb question(okay it actually just is a dumb question), but I figured it was worth a shot to see if anyone had a similar situation, etc because I filed my ticket with Das tonight and it probably won't be responded to until Monday. Also because I'm an optimistic dork.
