Thanks for all the great suggestions, guys! I had listened to Between the Buried and Me, Protest the Hero AND OSI before, but when I gave them another chance they were much better than I realized (especially OSI. I think I had listened to a later album, initially). Strapping Young Lad is fun, and I have no real opinion on Iron Maiden yet, but we'll see. Thanks again.

Bonus: Jerry Harrison was the keyboardist before moving on to Talking Heads! On a lesser note, check out The Bongos' "Drums along the hudson," which was recently reissued with bonus tracks and so on. They were contemporaries of the scene that the Heads came out of and bubble along on a speedy, neurotic power pop high. Really great record, and Richard has gone on to do a bunch of other cool stuff.

I'm looking for music in the same vein as Asian Kung-Fu Generation, Birds of Tokyo and Franz Ferdinand. I guess I would say I like alternative and indie rock (if I wasn't clearly music illiterate). I don't mind branching out of those areas. Here's a sample from each band, to maybe give you an idea. I'm trying to find a song to discretely incorporate into a playlist I'm making for a girl I'm dating. Something that says "I like you a lot," but not in an over the top OMG YOU'RE THE BEST THING EVER I'M SO IN LOVE kind of way, which seems to be the only song I can find. Any suggestions? Most of the playlist is trip hop and low key electronic stuff.

I used to put this on when giving my friends a ride somewhere, and I think 1 of them made it through the whole song without begging me to turn it off. "Physically uncomfortable" was the most common description for how they felt. EDIT: Also thanks to Youtube, I now know that this cover of My Sharona exists and would probably fit the bill too.

I've recently been listening to The Sims 3 Soundtrack (written by Steve Jablonsky). It is likely to be classical of some sort, but in a way very atmospheric, bright. I don't know where and how should I look for similar, as I'm not sure how to describe it. I will be very grateful if someone gets any suggestions. I'm a huge fan of Hot Water Music and their contemporaries. Lately I've wanted to get into their influences, namely Leatherface and Husker Du. If anyone could point towards quintessential albums or songs by those bands I would greatly appreciate it. There's simply too much material for me to figure out where to start.

"Zen Arcade" for Husker Du and "Mush" for leatherface are the 'general consensus' quintessentials, I also like New Day Rising from Husker Du and Warehouse: Songs and Stories (although that's much later Husker Du and probably not the place to start.) I don't know much else about Leatherface though.

Leatherface is polarizing - Stubbs's voice is pretty idiosyncratic. Some say poo poo, I say emotive. Their first handful of albums and 7"s (Beerpig/Cherry Knowle/Fill Your Boots/Mush) are my favourite, though difficult to obtain these days. All of their standards are on the first CD of their discography on Rejected Records; unfortunately, again a bit difficult to obtain. Husker Du made a pretty big switch (though in reality it was a constant progression from their first 7") from traditional speedy hardcore to noisy power-pop between "Zen Arcade" and "New Day Rising." If you're coming from Hot Water Music as a reference point, definitely start with "New Day Rising" and then get "Flip Your Wig" and "Candle Apple Grey" before going backwards in the discography. Those three records are heavy, noisy pop perfection.

I'm trying to get into Jazz, but it's so hit or miss for me. I can't actually explain what does it for me (Due to my complete lack of knowledge for the genre), so far I've only gotten into the more famous Miles Davis stuff. I'd like to go back to the thing that got me into it, but I cannot for the life of me figure out what that actually is. The song I heard it in, is a rap song called "Radion Ska Kneppas" by Malk de Koijn (Small danish group), the last 2 minutes and 50 seconds of that song, I'm fairly sure they are sampling some sort of jazz artist. I'd link to the material but I can't find it on any streaming sites. If anyone can tell me who or what that piece is, I'd be greatful, and if you know anything like it you're willing to share, even better! Thanks in advance.

It would be most closely related to lounge/easy listening and smooth jazz. Also it doesn't sound like a sample to me, which would explain why it doesn't show up on whosampled.com, even though a number of other tracks from the same album do. A few of bands you might like are Soul Coughing, Kammerflimmer Kollektief and Kid Koala.

I still think the article has a good list for what you're looking for. Vivian Girls, Dum Dum Girls, really that whole Shangri-Las inspired femme pop genre is all very similar to Best Coast (or rather Best Coast are similar to them).

Yeah okay, I give up, my taste in Jazz is too weird and specific. Thanks a lot for the suggestions, made me dig around a little, but I just can't put a finger on what's missing. I think I'll try heading back to into some funk. Can anybody recommend me any instrumental funk?
