Would it build up enough compression for it to self-ignite, or would you have to fire an ignition system during start up, and just use diesel because it's a reasonable tradeoff of availability and energy per unit mass?
Diesel fuel works just fine in turbines, but has to be preheated to lower the viscosity. It's used because it's much cheaper than aviation fuels. DFM (NATO F76) is a specific grade of bunker fuel; it has light elements distilled out to raise the flash point to 140°C (vice 100°C for most fuel oils). Diesel works just fine in turbine engines; it's preferred over Kerosene for most applications because of lower fire risk. Straight diesel fuel can be used in an emergency if F76 isn't available, but Navy doesn't like to do it because of the lower flash point.

Along similar lines, Navy uses JP-5 over JP-8 for jets; Navy JP-5 has a flash point of 140°F, and Air Force JP-8 100°F. They're practically identical in use, but JP-5 costs a lot more, so it's only used where the fire hazard merits it (EG, aboard ships.)

Me too, tis a beautiful looking thing. I just think it's astonishing though that the French pulled out of the Eurofighter programme because "their needs were different" only to built an almost exact replica for twice the cost.

It's because that's not why they pulled out, it was just an excuse. The French wanted a huge piece of the Eurofighter production pie, and nobody else would go for it. So, the French decided to pull out instead of effectively killing Dassault. Which I think was actually a cool move, plus the Rafale is pretty kickass.

This dude built a fully functional 727 simulator in his basement.

What he says about its construction...

quote:

Most of it is from the real aircraft. I had to build the throttle, the control column, center control stand, aircraft interior, overhead framework, seat and upholstery (Boeing flame retardant original pattern material), the shell, and the glareshield.

The control yoke is from an American 727, the instrument panel from a Lufthansa 727, and some of the radios are from TWA, Air France, and Continental. The radios are the only modules marked with an airline name. I don't know why this is.

The yoke is from a 727 that the previous owner flew on a regular basis for more than 30 years. The instrument panels were marked DLH.

Some parts like the eyeball vent and some wiring components and switches are from Aircraft Spruce. Others from e-Bay and BPB Surplus. APHS ran by the 30 year American pilot provided a lot of parts for this as well as some flight instruction and how some of the logic operated.

This is FS9. This flight model in not available for FSX. Five systems running XP and XP Pro and running various client/server applications make it all work.

The interface cards are from Hagstrom Electronics and Beta-Innovations LLC. The software go-between is Peter Dowson's FSUIPC latest release that features a mouse capture function for unsupported keyboard commands on third party aircraft. This in turn allows a switch to command a mouse-only function where no keyboard command has been coded.

Edit: Added more info.

A bit of trivia about the LM2500; it is the marine/industrial derivative of GE's CF6 aero engine, found on early versions of the Boeing 747 and McDonnell-Douglas DC-10, amongst others.

The CF6 can also be found on brand new airplanes rolling off the A330 and 767 assembly lines. Not that GE wouldn't rather see an airline convert those orders to GEnx powered 787s.

At least that would have been cheaper than monitors.

The LM2500 is derived from the original CF6-6, which is quite a bit different to the modern CF6-80. The CF6-80 marine/industrial derivative is called the LM6000.

I would have to be rich as a nation state before I bought an ex-military jet, certainly with the intention of making it flyable.

I was movie star rich and movie star crazy, maybe a WW2 warbird.

On lower scales of wealth, I'd get myself something austere and simple like this:

I have your solution - fit sequential Turbonators to your kit plane.

Instant turbine power for only US$69.99!!! Order now!

e: You may not believe it, but I can assure you they're very effective for altitude compensation. Yes, it's true - you can adjust QNH/QFE all over the shop and your aircraft's performance will remain entirely consistent. Amazing!!

The CEO of Boeing is talking up their 737 replacement: http://www.flightglobal.com/blogs/flightblogger/2011/02/boeing-ceo-jim-mcnerney-were-g.html

quote:

Boeing CEO Jim McNerney has given a rhetorical green light to replace the venerable 737, announcing the airframer intends to build a new aircraft to eclipse the re-engined Airbus A320neo, with a service entry around 2020.

Speaking at the Cowen and Company Aerospace and Defense Conference in New York City, McNerney says: "We're gonna do a new airplane. We're not done evaluating this whole situation yet, but our current bias is to not re-engine, is to move to an all-new airplane at the end of the decade, or the beginning of the next decade."

Hopefully the 797 (my guess) will be smoother to build than the 787, and that we'll still be flying around in airplanes in 2020.

That's not the trend they've been going in. The "re-engine" part is because it's not just going to be a 737 with new engines (a hypothetical "737-Voyager").
