I'm back! After doing nothing at all! I spend some time on and off working on my beat matching/melody matching and what not. I came out with a 2 song uhh mix? Or set? ANYWAY! I don't know whether to post it here or the mix thread, since it's not really a mix. Just something I'm working on getting better at. So I need some critiques on my transitions! transition starts about 5:50-6:15 http://soundcloud.com/fatsowellington/drummingmachinestarryeyedmix No effects, just music doing it's thing. Bad, ok, needs tweeks?

How do you guys organize your libraries? I finally cleaned mine up, organized everything and deleted everything that wasn't 320 or FLAC.

Also, first time I've posted in this thread. I currently use Serato (SL1 box), strictly internal mode the past year & a half, and use an Akai LPD8 controller for effects and auto-loops. At this point, DJing is just a hobby for me, I play out maybe one to three times a month in DC, but I did travel a bit playing drum'n'bass from 1999 to 2003.

http://mixesdb.com/db/index.php/Main_Page MixesDB might be useful for DJs maybe looking for ideas on overall set organization, transitional ideas, and such on. It's, well, a listing of all types of mixes that are online from every type of DJ. Not each mix has a full traacklist, and not all of them have players on the site, though one can easily google for more information. here is a list of the newest ones with players on the site On the topic of organization, I just have a few smart playlists lists set up in iTunes, sorting by genre if I have the BPM set. Not really that great, but, it works for now.

I'm one of the few weirdo DJs I guess that hates iTunes and keeps everything in folders separate from it. I only use iTunes to check a batch of MP3s to make sure everything is 320/tagged correctly. Other than that I like to keep iTune's grimy hands off my stuff.

I've always felt that I was weird because I use iTunes. Whenever I go out and follow up another DJ, it seems like I'm the only one who uses iTunes around here. While on the one hand, I don't like having iTunes all over my stuff, it's really easy for me to sort everything by BPM when I'm getting ideas when my reading of the crowd may fail.

I'm very new at this myself but as my ears hear it the Boy 8 Bit remix is essentially 'over' at 4.48 and the rest of it is outro for you to mix the next track in (I've heard DJs mix in another track right at the final chorus) but there's about a minute of wind down before you start getting the next track in there which leaves us until 7.20 where the Goulding track gets interesting... I'd like to hear other people's opinions on this but if I were you I'd grab the Goulding track and overlap it a lot more, start it off at 4.48, begin to drop out the bassline of the Florence track and bring the other one in to take over whilst slowly mixing out the highs and mids. I've had maybe a few hours total on my decks and this seems to work nicely for me. I guess it all depends on what kind of mixing you want to do, long flowy intro/outro mixing or the really short sharp banger type poo poo of just keeping you in choruses forever with minimal overlap. Play some more, I'll try and upload a few things at some point soon so you can critique my terrible attempts.

I usually do deep house mixes, but I was thinking of trying out a chill-out mix (stuff like Tosca, Nightmares on Wax, maybe an old Tribe Called Quest track). Is this stuff difficult to mix at all? I ask because it's not made with dj's in mind like dance music is (i.e. having a solid intro/outro to mix in and out of). I'll probably try using Virtual DJ to do this instead of my normal equipment (that way I don't have to burn any cd's either).

And yeah, the tracks tend to not be as DJ-friendly with their intros and outros A few things that help: * Using loops to extend the tracks a bit more to give you more time to blend * Harmonically mixing so that if you do have overlapping melodic bits, it doesn't clash These are the things I've found that have helped me with my downtempo mixing (I've posted a lot of them in the DJ mixes thread over the years)

Yeah I've got turntables with Serato. I picked up a korg nanokontrol which is alright, technically more banks but the buttons are tiny. Since I'm asking silly questions already - should I consider selling my old Torq Connectiv and SL1 and moving to Traktor 2? I really want to play around with four decks, and the SL1 is only going to devalue with SL4 coming.

I'm not doing this as a serious thing, just as a novelty for fun. This is the kind of stuff I have in my playlist to give you an idea: Tosca Massive Attack Portishead Sneaker Pimps Casino vs. Japan Tricky Victor Malloy A Tribe Called Quest Mr. Scruff DJ Krush Boards of Canada Everything is so incredibly different as to it's BPM, intros/outros that I don't see any reliable way to actually "mix" without it sounding like poo poo. v v I'm using Virtual DJ, but I don't think it has the Master Tempo function that my CDJ's do. actionjackson fucked around with this message at 05:34 on Apr 5, 2011 |

Actually the phase meter is really handy. The thing is, yea, it is off sometimes, but if it is it is always off by an easily discernible percentage (1/4, 1/8, etc). Besides, really, if you need a waveform or phase meter to mix....dude, what the hell are you doing with turntables anyway?

Hey thanks! I went to a club recently and was amazed by the DJ. Not that he was like GOD or anything, but he obviously knew his poo poo. He was dropping tracks left and right with out missing a beat or anyone noticing that the song changed until the chorus or drop of the new song started. I guess I'm looking to be the second one, but I'd love to be great at both.

I recently started playing around with creating mashups and have been looking for feedback/constructive criticism on my work. I tried posting these in the DJ mixes megathread, but was told that wasn't really the proper place. I'm going to hope that this is. I'm using Ableton Live. A mashup of David Holmes' 7/29/04 The Day Of, Drake's Forever, and La Caution's Thé à la Menthe. http://soundcloud.com/ma86-project/7-29-04-the-day-of-forever-la This mashup was a huge gamble, and the warping that occurred on the vocal track will make or break it for most people. A mashup of Hoshina Anniversary's See-Through, Purple Ribbon All-Star's Kryptonite, and Teddyloid's Theme of Corset. http://soundcloud.com/ma86-project/see-through-kryptonian-corset This is probably what I consider my best mashup out of the three. The music is from Panty & Stocking A mashup of Teddyloid's Fly Away, and Theme of Scanty & Kneesocks. http://soundcloud.com/ma86-project/angels-vs-demons-teddyloid-vs This was obviously the first one I did and received pretty positive feedback.

Just wanted to show off the new product we (Stanton) have been working on.... http://blog.mixonline.com/briefingroom/2011/04/05/stanton-launches-innovative-scs4dj-fully-integrated-dj-mixstation-at-musikmesse-2011/ Just wanted to talk about it, as I have been living, breathing, eating and dreaming of this unit for the last year and a half. We (Stanton) just announced for MusikMesse a new all-in-one media player/DJ station/MIDI controller, the SCS.4DJ. It has all the capabilities that people expect from DJ software (sync, loops, fx, etc), plus a big screen and touch sensitive platters. Anyway, if goon DJ's want to ask any questions, I would love to answer as I feel like a proud papa.

Leaving out the laptop is an interesting idea. I can see this getting some traction in the mobile market thanks to the phone import. Does it take pre-gridded tracks? Will it also be usable as a generic Traktor controller? Can you give any pricing hints? Also if you can say will there be any other SCS updates? I still think the SCS3 is dying for an audio interface module and a USB SCS1d that could do Traktor's high-res jog code would be neat.

Will it also be usable as a generic Traktor controller? Can you give any pricing hints? Thanks for the questions! So, in order.... 1.It does all the beat-gridding on the unit. The beat-gridding is a bit different than most software, as it is done with both BPM as well as a certain amount of elasticity for allowing for beats that are off the BPM grid. My drive right now has about 3,300 songs analyzed on it and it has been accurate for most everything (save for having to do the "Edit BPM" function and having to select half/double for some hip hop). The waveform is zoomable and multi-colored based on frequency as well, and there are lines to show you your beat grid to line everything up on your stacked waveforms. 2.Yup, it will work as a standard MIDI controller as well, and a really good one at that. The wheels are insane-they throw have close to double the resolution of about any other controller on the market. I'm actually mapping out a TSI as we speak. 3.Sadly I have to wait for the good folks in marketing to announce price, but it is REALLY nice. 4.Can't speak on future SCS updates, sorry. We are really trying to push the market though, and have worked like hell on things like the new SCS.1 firmware which makes the platters behave like a dream (there is a video of me somewhere on Youtube scratching on a Str8.150 and an SCS.1d side by side with it....)

LouietheCuban posted:well this is definitely something i'll look out for. thanks for giving us a sneak peak! How I ended up working for Stanton is a strange thing. The really short version is that I got the job ten years ago to take part of the place that DJ Focus had along with a friend of mine. I left a while after and then was there for the founding of Skratchworx, which led to product management for Gemini/Cortex (the Dmix stuff mostly) and freelance design work. A friend left Stanton a while back and chose to come back to Stanton, as it sort of felt like coming home. As for how to get into the industry, everyone is different. The thing about the industry is that there is no "product management" degree, as we all got into it in different ways. The typical way I see people get into it though is get a position in tech support, marketing (any level) or product specialist and do design work on the side. Shout about it to anyone who will hear you. Occasionally you see Jr. Product Management positions as well, and those are about the most direct shot into product development. If you have any questions, shoot me an email- johnnydirtbag at gmail dot com.
