13) Does the fact that there have been 54 club insolvencies in the Football League since the formation of the Premier League in 1992 have anything to do with the fact that so little of the Premier League fortune is shared with the league (except for parachute payments to relegated Premier League clubs)?

Parachute payments that would have been paid to relegated clubs who have "bounced back" are distributed through the rest of the Football League.

And parachute payments are inherently unfair, since it allows the clubs that have been relegated to borrow against the incoming payments. They are awful things.

To be fair, when the parachute payments came in, everybody claimed it was going to create guaranteed bouncebackability for anyone getting relegated, and that clearly hasn't been the case.

If anything, the point of the parachute payments was that teams coming up can invest in players and wages and not have to make a choice between being Derby County and going bankrupt if they go down.

I don't think anyone is denying that parachute payments are a good thing for the teams that get them. The point is how they distort the market for the other teams in the Championship that don't get them.

It would be nice if teams did use them in order to stop themselves going bankrupt, but they don't, they use them to pay vastly higher wages than the rest of the league in at attempt to go straight back up. This tends to mean the clubs without parachute payments have to offer those higher wages in order to compete, and we end up in the ridiculous situation where most of the clubs in the Championship are massively in debt and/or constantly on the edge of going into administration.

Honestly don't understand why the TV money in the football league would need to be dropped quite so drastically. Surely there's enough demand in the foreign markets to show more English football than is currently being broadcast. I know the quality isnt anywhere near the premier league but there really are very few sporting options that can broadcast live concurrently in both Asia and Europe. I'm in Hong Kong and there is literally nothing to watch on Thursday and Friday evenings, Championship football would get decent ratings even if it were only shown in the back of pubs.

I think this is a UK-only deal. Basically the BBC bid for games last time, which drove up the price, and they've spent their budget other places so now Sky's the only game in town and the price is a lot lower.

I think for international companies to be interested in championship games the time slots would have to improve. Thursday and Friday evening games won't work in the rest of the world because these games would either be on during work hours during the week west of the UK, and very late at night east of the UK. The other games are of course at 3PM on saturday when the Premier League is already king and anyone with sense would broadcast a Premier League game over a Championship game in the same time slot.

Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday evening games work for the Champions League and Europa League because you're talking about elite teams in international competition rather than Cardiff, Norwich, and Scunthorpe.

Sky is reporting that Stan Kroenke is making a move for Danny Fiszman and Nina Bracewell-Smith's shares. That would put him at about 46 percent and he would then launch a takeover bid. No quotes from Sky. Just the news report (though it did only break a very short time ago).

She's in the Walton family who's father created Walmart. That family is worth like 100 billion dollars so if Stan himself may not have the money to buy Arsenal, she sure as hell does.

e: Kroenke himself was worth 2.6 billion dollars the last time Forbes put out a billionaire list. Ann herself is on the list as being worth 3.4 billion dollars so between the two of them that's $6 billion.

To be honest though, I still don't think he has the straight cash to buy Arsenal. The last valuation was a bit over 1 billion dollars US.

Holy poo poo. There's like, 6 members of the Walton family on the Forbes 400 billionaires list as well as Drayton McClane who apparently has a piece of Walmart Logistics as well.

I don't know the family history but if he were to buy Arsenal, I'd have to imagine he would leverage it against one of his U.S. ventures as opposed to leveraging it against Arsenal.

What, I wonder, does this hidden face of madness reveal of the makers? These K'Chain Che'Malle?
I can't say I'm at all pleased that we're to pass from multiple ownership into the hands of one man, but at least it's an insider. It's someone we've grown to trust. Someone who isn't leverage us against ourselves, but rather has the cash to buy us and the knowledge that he can increase our value without having to gut the team.

I imagine the day to day running of the club won't change drastically, but we will see American pre-season tours, more international image use and stuff like that.

Of course, I may be wrong. If he turns out to be Abramovic Mark 3 (City have the Mark 2 already) I'll be upset. If he turns out to be the Glazers or Hicks&Gillet's successor then I'll die cursing the names Fitszman and Bracewell Smith.

I thought this was never going to happen because if he bought the others then he has to buy Usamov's who could then pretty much jack his price up 100%? And if he didnt then Kroenke would be forced to sell the ones he bought.

Or am I wrong.

Dude bought the St Louis NFL team for like $700 million, I think he could probably afford Arsenal. I guess this was inevitable, since Fiszman just learned he has cancer, and Lady Nina has been looking to offload for a while now. Better him then the russian oligarch, I guess.

His team did win the MLS title last year for what its worth. Wish Mark Cuban was interested in acquiring a team.

Its sad to think that there really are very few British billionaires or other richuns capable of buying into football. We have to hope JK Rowlings kids are just nuts for it once their trustfund kicks in.

that's fine so long as we continue as we are i'm happy but would prefer plurality of ownership. If he does take over i'm hoping he keeps the status quo but maybe uses his US teams to raise our profile and maybe get us a sweet sweet shirt deal when the emirates one expires in a year or two. Him owning it also means usmanov doesn't which is a great thing, he's made it very clear he would meddle and supports man utd.

he can't even delay it so i'm guessing he'll just take the money, break even and go. Will be interesting to see what happens with davied dein. I'd be delighted if he came back in from the cold and got a seat on the board. No.1 issue with this for me is that stan keeps the fanshare scheme (he will, iirc he was one of its biggest supporters on the board) and lets any small fan shareholders keep their stakes.

Yeah I'd like Davin Dein back too, the work he did together with Wenger can not be understated. Depends if the rest of the board wants him back after the stunts he pulled that made him leave in the first place.

He wants to get back into football (iirc he tried to get a job at Liverpool in january), he knows the club and he's got a good relationship with Wenger too.
