I want to get a set of no-bullshit/frills cheap steel wheels for my wrangler. Where should I look?

edit: oh wait - I just discovered ebay.

Both of the closest ones in maine and VT are sold out... whatever the gently caress that means. I guess They like jeeps but not enough to welcome everyone who shows up with one.

my brother is teh pwn.
I have a 1999 XJ with 120,000 miles on it. Just recently my ABS light came on and there was a noise coming from my front driver side wheel. I had to limp the car home, and on the way the noise stopped. It was almost a grinding/rubbing noise, but very hard to put into words. Anyways, I have been reading a bit online and saw that sometimes the abs light could mean a bad wheel bearing. Is that possible? Any ideas?

Thanks

Same thing happened to me and it was indeed the bearing.

Sounds like a bearing--jack the wheel up, grab it at 12 and 6 and try to jiggle it. If there's play it's definitely the bearing. I just had my passenger side front bearing replaced and it was pretty loose & made a horrible grinding sound when I spun the tire. Replacement shouldn't be too pricey for a wheel bearing--a shop charged me a little under $300 for parts and labor. If you do it yourself be aware that in 1999 they switched hub types (cast or composite) and they aren't interchangeable so you might need to get the part off before you know which one to get.

Well the way I look at it is, you've got a few courses of action.

1. Get the Comanche
2. Get the Comanche
3. Get the Comanche

All three of those also entail posting pictures and awesome Comanche chat.

Good luck!

I've been putting up with the noise from my cracked exhaust manifold on my 99 XJ since October. I want to replace it now because it really sounds like poo poo. Does anyone have any recommendations for a replacement that won't crack? I have a buddy that will weld the old one for me for free, but I have a gut feeling it will just crack again and be a waste of time.

It's got a fairly common engine, How expensive would a used/junkyard manifold be?

Go look at quadratec's catalog, they have tons of manifolds that solve that problem with expansion joints or two pieces.

The jeep will get quite a bit of highway driving to dirt bike racing events (10 times a year), towing 1250-1500 pounds. Most events are way off road in muddy/rocky terrain, and one or two are sandy a year.

The intake manifold was changed slightly between '99 and '00, so there may or may not be some minor alignment issues with headers. In most cases, it just takes a little bit of trimming or grinding.

Ok, the puddle of UV dye under my drip hose, and the shop that replaced my AC compressor (you can add AC systems to the list of things not to put Stop-Leak in) have told me that my evaporator is leaking very badly. Aside from putting more refrigerant in before the leak got too bad, I've never worked on an AC system. How big of a pain in the rear end is it to replace the evaporator on a '98 Cherokee? I understand that it involves taking most of the dash apart, but are there special proprietary tools I'll need to get the lines off the evaporator once I get the dash apart?

I got a quote for about $900 to do the whole job. Should I get this evaporator or the "Factory Air" version my girlfriend gets a discount on at Advance Auto and try to put it in myself? Should I rip everything apart and pay a shop to do the specialized bit since I'll need to get it purged anyways? Does it even make a difference if the shop is using the book hours for labor charges? Does the problem in every Jeep AC from this era originate somewhere else and I should just sweat to death because a new evaporator won't last anyways?

As an aside, I know what "factory air" is slang for and I'm immature enough to giggle whenever I turn on my AC in the future if I get that one.

My local junkyard (Harry's U Pull It) has them listed at $16.10, plus the admission fee. Then I have to find one, pull it off myself and hope that it is in good shape. Even if I do find one in good shape it will probably just crack again after I put it on simply because of the flawed design.

This is pretty much EXACTLY what I am looking for, thank you. Cheaper than I would have guessed, too. I looked on eBay and I could get a Dorman OE replacement for like $110 shipped. I would defiantly rather pay the extra $60 and get something that won't crack again and increases performance.

You can do the labor yourself and just have them do the pumpdown and refill. You will want to let THEM change the drier though as it needs to be installed and IMMEDIATELY vacuumed down or it'll be just as bad as the old drier.

I'd say most of that $900 is the dash labor. They are a royal pain in the rear end.

You can get the tools to vacuum your a/c system from harbor freight for a fraction of the cost of labor, and the typical refill kit comes with a pressure gauge that will keep you from overfilling.

Hi Jeepers. Australian Jeep owner here, 2010 JK Wrangler 2 door sports Renegade, manual petrol. Although I'm certain you are all quite aware of what they look like, here's my baby on a recent beach trip here in sunny Queensland.

Love the car, had a Mazda 3 SP23 before this so was a bit of a difference and honestly I only really came to truly love it after I did an 8000km road trip from my home town of Rockhampton to Adelaide in South Australia and back last December. Dead straight, semi-desert highways, flooded creeks and plains, windy twisty coastal roads all made for some really great driving.

Anyway that's my story, I haven't done any mods (yet) so I'll show myself out.

Where/what is the drier? Amazon said I needed to change it but I don't remember it from when I was skimming the procedure in my factory service manual, possibly because I was a bit distracted by "READ THE SAFETY SECTION FIRST OR THE AIRBAG WILL KILL YOU!...or just disconnect the battery for two minutes" warnings on every page.

Is the car still drivable with the dash apart? I've only taken it apart enough to fiddle with the gauges or change a stereo and some video on youtube for a Grand Cherokee (as if the AC never fails on an XJ) showed they had removed the steering column for some reason.
