Sorry if this isn't the place to ask, but wasn't this game based on a book? Also this game was great when I was little. I replayed it and finally beat it a few years ago but it hasn't aged very well. Still felt some nostalgia when I beat it, though.

I don't think this game was, but Parasite Eve was originally a book and a movie before it was made into a game.

I don't know if having a guy acting all tough, forever shed that image because people wanted to give him the gay treatment. That is different than having so many male characters past and current, show up as pussy-whipped and scared of girls.

You know, if you figure that Aeris is actually a high-class escort, it stands to reason that Corneo was one of her regular clients. Which means she knew that only women can get into his mansion. SHE KNEW.

Mainly because "you try outrunning lightning" and "holy poo poo that was an explosion of fire". Higher level rogues tend to ignore that poo poo completely though. As for other systems in general? It's goddamn magic.

I know that WoW uses a completely different standard for magic, though -- magic users more than anyone have to stack their respective accuracy stats or else their spells will miss more often then not. Surprised the hell out of me back in the day as I was still fresh from console RPGs.

As far as I know, spells in WoW can also achieve critical hits, which is...very logical, actually, why should it be limited to weapons only? And healing magic can also crit. "I'm going to heal you RIGHT IN THE FACE!"

Magic in WoW can't be blocked, dodged, or parried, though (which also makes sense). That's why they need more hit rating than melee - because melee players have to stack a /different/ stat that lets them reduce the chance of their target dodging or parrying their attacks, and the devs are trying not to screw either side. That's why it doesn't apply as much to single-player games like the various good Final Fantasies - the developers don't have to worry as much about screwing a whole population of users who will send them angry e-mail. (Although if they make magic too useless I'm sure they get e-mail from people who are angry they can't play the magic users effectively in the game.)

The earlier Star Ocean games paused the otherwise real-time system for magic, making it always hit. The later games made magic also real-time and thus a lot of the spells could be dodged if you were paying attention. Still, other spells pretty much ruined your day if they were cast. As for the FF system? I just have to tell myself that what I am seeing in the battle isn't really what is going on, but is an artistic expression of the true battle. Also, to make it easier to control 3 people at once....which I'm still waiting for SE to let me do again.

I'm not entirely sure why making Cloud attractive, but not quite attractive enough, makes Don Corneo decide to go with Aerith rather than Tifa, though. Maybe the just-barely-convincing version of Cloud freaks Don Corneo out enough that he goes for Tifa on the basis that she has the skimpiest outfit, and so is most likely to be genuinely female?

Well, Tifa's been there longer, so he probably already looked at her and decided she was pretty good. So, I guess if Cloud is horrible looking he just falls back on his first decision and goes for the one with the biggest tits, and if he's okay-looking he actually gives it some thought and goes with Aeris and why are we talking about this what is wrong with us?

Maybe Aeris' kink side is well-known throughout the Slums, so if Corneo isn't properly worked up, there's too much pain for it to be worthwhile. Tifa is squishy, but otherwise average, so if Cloud-chan can't stimulate him enough, he defaults to her. But if Cloud-chan is pretty decent-looking, he gets excited enough to put on the gown and play bodyguard with Aeris. And if Cloud-chan is cho-kawaii, then Corneo gotta have it and goes straight for him. (USER WAS PUT ON PROBATION FOR THIS POST)

Hey Elentor I rated this thread harshly during an early period when there were several pages of autistic superfans arguing about which Final Fantasies were Cool and which ones were Emo. But your posts are actually real good and I find the Rio stuff interesting. If you want to post more tactical stuff & explain the game mechanics a little more as they get more complex, that would be cool-- FFs are usually designed so that the audience can muddle through them without ever learning how to game the system, which is certainly what i did when I was like 10 and this came out. Man I like the Midgar backgrounds, they have this combination of human grime and prefab cheeziness that really evokes east Asian cities in the 90s, but more generally anyplace kind of poor and busy and diverse; it feels more inhabited than it really is, whereas most video game cities feel kind of empty even when there's a ton of NPCs around. poo poo looks kind of like the movies Wong Kar Wai was making around the time this came out.

It's sort of a reward. If he chooses Tifa, you have to fight the room full of horny men Corneo throws you to, then go rescue Aeris before you can confront the Don. If he chooses Aeris, Tifa fights her own way out.

I find it hard to believe Mistress Aeris would have a harder time taking care of a bunch of ornery fellas than Tifa. She'd have them carry her out on a palanquin and hand Cloud a big bag of gil from flower sales.

She just takes longer to get out because she's busy selling her "flowers" and then Cloud butts in and she plays up being in distress.

No hard feelings, not many people have rated this thread anyway. Yeah there are not many NPCs in Wall Market, but the art direction is so good that my head automatically populates it, for example. I think it's the whole "this is just a representation" thing, and FF7 does that pretty well.

I've been following this LP, and the recent updates have made me remember why my parents never bought me a PlayStation when I was little (though I could have gotten this game on PC back in the day, I suppose). Still never played it though, and friends have never gone into this much detail, so just keep up the good work.

Fanboys get the characters all wrong. Cloud isn't emo, he's a jerk with heart of gold. Aeris isn't an innocent flower girl, she's an independent strong-willed slut. Barret isn't a just a Mr.T. knockoff, he's a well-intentioned extremist who is simply trying to make the world a better place for his adopted daughter. Tifa isn't just a walking pair of boobs, but Cloud's childhood friend who just looking out for Cloud's safety. Loving the hell out of this LP, FF7 was the game to finally convince me to stop being a Nintendo fanboy. That and all the good games were on the Playstation. I hate the game's fanbase and extended universe though. Maybe I'll analyze the other playable characters once Elentor comes across them. wafflemoose fucked around with this message at 18:43 on Jun 12, 2011 |
