Whoa, that's cool- I didn't get a chance to talk with him, as he was getting ready to take it up when I was done shooting the B-17. It was a nice way to spend a couple of hours- the EAA folks seem to be a really friendly bunch.

I went to A&P school there at Felts. She came in and the crew asked our class to come check it out in exchange for washing it down. I cleaned the flaps and aft right fuselage. I met some of the guys who do the Stearman restorations, too. A classmate has a hanger on the East end he built a RV-8 I helped with so we got to know a few folks there at that field.

Mid-Atlantic Air Museum up in Reading just had their WWII airshow this weekend. I skipped it, since I went last year and drinking beer was just a higher priority this time around. But your Stearman comment reminded me of this: They're in the process of restoring a P-61. It's a very long process, they started it back in the early 90s. But here's what the thing looked like when they went to haul it out of the New Guinea crash site: They were fortunate in that it crashed onto a pile of rocks, and wasn't directly in contact with the jungle floor. When they went to assess it, it still had air in the tires and hydraulic fluid in the lines, and corrosion was actually inhibited by the vegetation growth. Now, a while ago, the US government basically signed away any interest to any wrecked aircraft, and said that anything lost during the war was a spoil of war, owned by the country on whose soil it rests. So this aircraft belonged to Indonesia, and Indonesia wanted to get paid. Payment in this case took the form of a fully restored, flying PT-13 Stearman. MAAM's been offered $6 million for the P-61, and that was a couple years ago before they even had the engine nacelles on. They (rightly) said no. Here's a cow orker in his PT-19: And here's this thing:

I'm still trying to decide. The last few times I've been able to get in with media credentials, or camp in the warbirds area with my weirdo re-enactor buddy, but with neither of those looking likely this year, I may just hang back and see other peoples pictures.

Oh hey I've been there, bit of a ghost town really: Cool fact: they filmed part of Con Air out there, and it's the WWII airbase where nuke weapon test drops were conducted from the Enola Gay and Bockscar.

It's popular with the folks in N. Utah, since the casinos aren't too bad and it's less than half as far as Las Vegas and a lot cheaper. Most of that stretch of I-80 and over the top of Wendover is USAF airspace. Lots of air-to-air training, and several air-to-ground ranges, including a strafing area, which is cool as poo poo to see. There's actually a control tower next to the strafing area, and the F-16s will literally buzz the tower ala Top Gun while they make their runs.

One of the casinos actually charters a 737 occasionally to bring in old people (from Minnesota or something) to gamble. And speaking of jets, there's going to be an airshow at ENV later this month. I could be wrong, but isn't the wendover training range the largest restricted airspace in the US? It's amusing to be cruising above I-80 (the only place there's no restricted airspace) and overhear on clover control some poor bastard get intercepted by F-16s, because he strayed off-course and wandered into the boxes north or south of the interstate.

Over land, I believe it is the largest. It's rare that the entire complex is active though. Over the Atlantic, Pacific, and Gulf there are larger military airspace complexes. You're probably hearing safety point-outs rather than intercepts. I've had to make about 200 of those drat calls. It's a real pain in the rear end when moron Farmer Joe in his 40 year old Cessna doesn't know how to read a loving chart and strays into the middle of a mission.

I dunno but I'm so loving sick and tired of FSX. Xplane just doesn't really work for the kind of stuff I want, so there's not really another alternative. MS is working on Flight but it's probably going to be delayed by years or suck. Or both.
