I really liked the first one, but didn't bother finishing the second book. I just hated how he changed the structure to a typical stephen king style character per chapter shuffle, and how the pace slowed down to a plod.

Also having keats as the main character was just dumb.

you're not supposed to emotionally connect with the obvious characters, you're supposed to emotionally connect with the AIs. it's their civilization, not the humans
