I'm not sure how you would accomplish it in FNVEdit, actually--certain things are difficult to tweak with that program. In my case, I opened up the mod in GECK, found the two F3NV scripts that deal with heat haze, and gutted them. The only things remaining were their titles, "begingamemode" and "end" commands. I've tried to delete scripts, wholesale, but it causes more problems than its worth when you're dealing with weather mods. Now it just looks at essentially blank scripts. No more haze.

I'd recommend Project Nevada as the "meat" of your loadout. It's pretty much recommended to everybody because of how versatile it is: You can tweak, add, and remove features until you find exactly what you're looking for.

Then get a weather mod if you're burnt out on the static default environments. Recently we've been talking about F3NV Project Reality. However, you might want to get something a little more tried and true like Nevada Skies, which has a large user base.

You'll probably want a weapon modding-mod like WMX or WME. They're very similar, and if you ask for recommendations, you'll probably get an even number of people suggesting one over the other. Failing that, (or if you're interested in a lot of Gun Porn) check out Naky's "The Armory". It adds a fuckton of realistic guns to the game.

For textures, there is Ojo Bueno / Poco Bueno's texturing mod, Arenovalis' weapon retextures, and Vurt's Wasteland Flora Overhaul. These will add some variety to the landscape and make things nicer to look at. If you're planning on using some of the higher-resolution textures (Ojo Bueno), make sure you've got plenty of RAM and are using the FNV4GB enabler. Also, you might want to check out my version of More Perks Revised - Redux. It adds another 40 or so perks to the game that will help customize your character nicely.

So basically, you have your overhaul, a weather mod, a weapons mod, some texture updates, and a perk pack. That should probably be enough to get you on your feet. Take it slow and make sure you read the directions on everything. Trying to troubleshoot mod conflicts can be a real pain in the rear end.

Cream-of-Plenty beat me to it, but in addition to what he said, I'd highly recommend downloading FNVEdit and just using it to take a look at how the various mods interact. Don't change anything unless you know what you're doing! But learning exactly what's going on in terms of certain items overriding others can help you understand a lot about how to set up your load order without having to ask other people, and eventually how to make changes/updates to mods without having to find a patch for it. I rarely ever download compatibility patches for mods now since I know enough about modding that I can easily throw one together with about 5 minutes of FNVEdit (and they tend to work a lot better than the ones other people put up, since they're designed specifically for MY mod setup).

The main thing you need to know is that later items override earlier ones, and that the system is VERY modular - an item, for example, isn't just "an item", but rather it's a thing that links to several other things that describe its effects, those effects may link to things of their own. A change to one does NOT change the others - which is a good thing! It means that you can change an item effect without having to modify the base item (since when it goes to look up the effect, it will find your modified one instead of the original one). Most mods are based around this principle, so you might see a lot of them that seem to have very large effects only actually change one little part of something - it's just that something is referenced by a bunch of other things in the base game, so it's automatically distributed everywhere.

Basically, don't be afraid of modding - it's much less complicated than it looks, and if you never dig around in the files, you'll never understand how they work.

(if all else fails, backups are your friend)

Well, so long as you're using the 4GB enabler, I'd say that Nevada Skies would be where I'd look next. You can change weather mods on the fly, but just to be sure, go indoors, make a new save, and then disable the mod. Start up the game, load the indoor save, and make another new save. This second save will be unassociated with Nevada Skies.

Nevada Skies may not be the culprit, but I seemed to notice a general increase in interior / exterior transition CTDs while running the mod (as do some other users.) I think it has to do with the mod bungling what weather it wants to give you when you step outside. Worse comes to worse, try running with a completely different weather mod (or no weather mod) for a while and see if your stability has improved.

Another thing to keep in mind is that autosaves and quicksaves aren't the most reliable things. I don't recall why, but there's some logic that has determined that actually hitting escape and manually saving your game reduces the probability of saves becoming corrupted.

I uninstalled the URWLified esp and replaced it with the vanilla Nevada Skies 0-6-3 esp and feel like things have generally improved. I got one CTD so far, but I will keep testing it and maybe remove the weather mods altogether. Thanks for the advice guys!

EDIT: I'm sure you're right about it being the weather mod. Things lock up less now, but they still CTD. It's always when loading an exterior cell. I guess I'll just have to live with it or bid adieu to my weather stuff. Any recommendations for a mod that does weather but doesn't crash?

Related to this, Cipsci's auto save manager is VERY helpful for stability, because it replaces all quick and auto saves with manual saves created by the mod.

I don't know why auto/quicksave causes save corruption, but I've had very good stability with both FO3 and NV using CASM, much better than without it (and I'm using all the same mods)

It's happened to me before, so yeah. Just install CASM from the OP and use the quicksave function from that. Actually, CASM should be required for anyone and everyone ever. It's made my game go from "I have to detonate this grenade at my feet to be able to save my game!!!" to "Oh wow, my game crashed but I only have to redo about three minutes of work!"

Regarding weather mods, I've been using Nevada Skies URWLified, but it seems to be sort of unpopular lately? The thing I like about it is how it handles the general lighting in conjunction with the weather, but I do notice I crash on loading cells a lot. I'd be willing to try something else but I'm really indecisive, and the pictures in the OP give a good frame of reference but aren't helping me commit :( F3NV Project Reality looks really good, as long as it has some clear blue skies to go with it. The thing about Nevada is that it gets so drat hot from LACK of clouds, so I'd hope there are some clear skies amidst all the gloomy and atmospheric STALKER clouds (which look really nice). Maybe I'll tough it out a bit longer while this gets some revisions. Actually, does anyone have any NSkies 0.7 experience yet? Is that more stable than URWLified?

It will only corrupt saves made after that point. If you have previous "Good" saves, those can never be corrupted. But if you make a save that gets corrupted, any saves made after that point, quick/auto or manual, they will have the same corruption in them, which could set you back pretty far if you only catch on to it much later (the only real way to catch on to it is if you start crashing a lot when trying to save).

Again, I recommend using CASM and just not having to worry about it. I've only crashed a couple times in my current playthrough, and they may be because of mods rather than save corruption (The delay DLC mod seems to cause crashes for some reason).

I see someone else released another nifty backpack mod on the nexus, so I will be borging that into my universal backpack mod eventually, and will most likely only release it on here, since I won't be arsed to get everyone to give me permission, (like the last time.)

Also, I may dust off my ED-E companion mod that gave the little bot a zapping zapper and tune that up, assuming anything is broken.

Using F3NV Project Reality for the last few hours, I can say that the screenshots can be somewhat misleading. A lot of the days are bright and sunny, but what's interesting is that the climates are decidedly unsaturated. Sort of the exact opposite of Nevada Skies / Western Skies' oversaturated, rich colors. It still reminds me a lot of STALKER, but more because of the way everything seems to have the life drained out of it.

As such, it's probably not for everybody. That being said, I'm seriously considering keeping it. It very much gives me a "The Road" or "Book of Eli" feel. Plus the darkness at night is perfect. Encourages the gobbling of cateye, but you can still travel by moonlight.

I'm a little irked by Nevada Skies 0.7, if only because of the pathetic documentation for it. The author has taken a "figure it out yourself" stance to the whole thing, going so far as to avoid answering questions like it's a big goddamn mystery. Last time I checked, the Thermo-Hygrograph isn't in yet, so there is no weather customization. And from the scant info on it, it sounds like Nevada Skies' weather with Fallout New Vegas' lighting. I'm not entirely sure how that works.

Alright, you've sold me on it :) One thing that bugs me about NSkies is how drat dark the nights can be. I know you can adjust the night brightness, but it never looks quite right, so I usually just hide inside until daybreak. Plus I'm sick of having towns suddenly attack me because they got bit by a sandstorm and they somehow think I'm responsible! I'll post my impressions in the thread once I've had a chance to see how it plays.

I'd have to assume that NSkies 0.7 would just be bugfixes or something, but it's just so strange that they'd provide almost no information about a release that seems to remove features. The author did mention he'd be releasing additional .esp's for changing settings, but that seems like a worse way to implement customization than it had before.

I've yet to encounter any corrupted saves during regular play with NV (came across a couple while testing out way too many mods at the same time), but I remember this being the case with FO3. It was actually worse than that because it would randomly bork all my saves from time to time, even if they were on different characters. The solution is probably my favorite way to fix a bug in a game ever, though: Just blow yourself up. Worked every time.

Vitriol, if you're going to be updating your backpack mod, would it be possible to give the leather backpack in your mod the same container/portable bedroll functionality it has in this leather backpack mod? I've always wanted to use this, but the way your mod puts backpacks on everybody in the wasteland was too good to give up and I try to avoid conflicts where I can. In the meantime I just use a portable bedroll mod on top of yours, but it would be nice to have them consolidated into one mod.

It's by design, don't make it read only. Instead, make all changes to the fallout_default.ini in the Steam directory as well as the Fallout.ini in your documents - what happens is if you run from the launcher, it copies fallout_default.ini to fallout.ini, so whatever is in there is what will end up going in game.

I tried the Creatures Give You Hell mod suggested earlier here, and started a new game. Two geckos completely dominated me, Sunny Smiles and her dog.

Yeah, I had to go and tweak a couple of settings to get everything to feel right. The default settings are a little too aggressive, and I had Sunny get taken out by Geckos a couple of times before I realized I needed to change some stuff.

Are you using Arenovalis' Weapon Retextures? There is a patch for that.

Yes. I'm already using that ESP. I was even able to swap out textures like This Machine's composite stock so I didn't have to look at a non-Arenovalis lovely replacement. But for whatever reason the Police Pistol and the Trail Carbine refuse to cooperate.

e: Which is why I was curious if I could see the correct file addresses of those that have working textures with WMX installed.
