No.

The real answer is that publishers realized that sci-fi/fantasy audiences don't buy books based on the author, but on the franchise

if a nerd reads a long rear end book they feel committed, see all of the idiots in this thread who have read the first three ASOIAF books so they feel compelled to read the next sixteen

this is why they don't publish anything shorter than 300 pages, and why every book needs at least 2 sequels

read your goddamn kindle manual

press right on the d-pad to navigate to the next chapter

unless you pirated the book and it isn't formatted correctly.

i remember reading this one fantasy author's essay talking about getting books published and he indicated that the bookstores are basically pushing back against the increasingly huge tomes that fantasy authors were putting out - the problem being that these huge books were taking up way too much shelf space

sci-fi doesn't seem to be nearly as bad as fantasy in that regard. the dune books are pretty hefty for sci-fi and they are dwarfed by robert jordan's mountain of poo poo. the exception that i'm personally aware of is peter hamilton, but his books aren't very good anyway so who gives a gently caress about that clown.

I know it isn't sci-fi but if you are sick of long, slow books read Robert Louis Stevenson, really good adventure novels.

most sci-fi books are just just adventure novels in space anyway.

It was published in 1953 and is a better cyberpunk novel than neuromancer.

there's a reason the B in the the science fiction ABC is Bester and not Bradbury.

Stars My Destination aka Tiger Tiger is also really good.

He wrote another sci-fi novel between these two called "Rat Race" aka "Who He?"

It's been out of print forever and I've never seen a copy

has anyone read it?

EDIT: actually, looks like it isn't sci-fi afterall
