So I take it that in order to roll with the big dogs (:clint:) you're pretty much going to have to go with a manual transmission in this game? I turned off every handicap but kept automatic and even on my cleanest laps I still wasn't able to beat my best time where I used manual (and that lap was DIRTY. Like I hit a wall. Yeah I hit a wall on my best time so what)

Man the last turn in the demo is absolutely killing me with the Zonda. I swear I lose a good 2-5 seconds on that turn alone. I have yet to take it absolutely perfect.
Yes, manual is kind of a must, though it doesn't really have anything to do with the increased shift times when using auto IMO. It's more about being able to control how much torque is available at a given point, and to avoid shifting when unnecessary. Auto can catch you out with stupid shifts at the worst of times and doesn't exactly help you get into a good rhythm. Manual isn't all that difficult to deal with anyway; after a bit of practice it will become second nature and you'll wonder why you ever bothered with auto in the first place. Once you get used to the car and how it sounds you'll also be able to shift at about the right point by engine pitch alone, keeping your eyes on the track rather than the RPM gauge. Btw, are you using bonnet/cockpit view or follow cam? I'd really advise against using the latter, as it removes an important part of feedback, which is already very limited in a simulated environment to begin with. I think having a fixed camera of some sort is a must, as it shows you what the car body does in relation to your steering input - kind of a replacement for feeling the g-forces with your butt. Without that, any steering and throttle corrections will come far too late most of the time.

As for the last turn, I tend to stay on the outside for most of it and only start pulling inwards at about the point where the (second?) red billboard appears, applying throttle slowly to ideally exit in a barely noticeable drift. Basically what you want to do is to choose your line through the corner in such a way that you can apply a significant amount of throttle as early as possible. While that is technically not the fastest way through the corner*, it ensures the highest exit speed that you will carry through the whole straight following it. Note that you really should make an effort to run multiple good laps after each other, because the exit speed advantage has a bigger effect on the following lap, not the current one.

That said I've only just got a 1:43.0x, which is still more than 4 seconds off what is possible. Still have a lot to learn myself :)

* If you were to take the "ideal" line though the corner, you'd be at the corner exit quicker, but you'd have to nurse the throttle a lot longer to avoid smashing into the outside barrier at turn exit.

Because of no weather and no night racing I won't be buying this.

Those were the two things I really hoped they would implement in Forza 4 :(

Frankly I'd rather they not include them rather than put them in and have them be half-assedly done. If the night racing wasn't at least up to the quality of Shift 2's and the weather racing was just the "50% traction and particle effects" model GT5 used then they wouldn't be worth playing.

That's not what gaslighting means you hyperbolic dipshit.
So I'm trying to get an understanding for the World Tour mode in this game. From what I can tell, there are 10 seasons total, each with some specific number of races per season. No matter what car you're in, the game automatically adapts the game around that car?

I don't quite understand that. I know the idea is that you'll earn better and better cars as you go and the race will continue to adapt itself around whatever latest and greatest car you're driving, providing a nice even difficulty slope. But what if you want to drive some awful performer like a Toyota Prius around for the whole game? Are you going to race through 10 seasons of races balanced around that Prius?

Even if that's the case though, it definitely beats GT5's "win race, use all reward money to buy and upgrade a car you don't care about that you'll never touch again after you win once with it, repeat. If you actually want to buy some specific car that doesn't happen to be a reward car, get ready to grind. Maybe you'll get lucky and actually be able to use it in a career race, but don't count on it."

I think it just makes suggestions for what series to go to next based on what you're currently driving like it does in F3 (use your current car, try a new car, try a track you haven't raced on much), but that's how the entire game mode works instead of just being filler in between championship rounds.

Unless they somehow completely revamped the system into a semi-random race generator, but cool as that would be I don't see that happening.

World Tour Mode mode basically gives you 3 possible races / events that you can participate in, vaguely based on the car you're in at the time. What's interesting about it, however, is that rather than choosing an event and then doing 4-5 races, you're choosing an event then doing the races at that track. Meaning that a race which is normally meant to be done at Silverstone can take place just fine at Maple Valley. The only problem to this (as far as I've seen, at least), is that what you drive in career mode doesn't count towards the event list.

On the nature of rewards: Each race is either going to give you a "Mystery" Bonus, or a variety of experience bonuses. On the note of experience bonuses, you either get a Fixed amount of XP, a % boost, or a random of either. You're notified of this before the race. And honestly? Taking a 3500XP boost in a new car really helps you get to Level 4 and it's free parts.

Speaking of freebies, the cars you get from manufacturers are ever-so-slightly upgraded to be at the top of their respective classes. Which is good, because you'll need this if you have the difficulty setting "Race with upgraded cars" on.

This actually sounds like a much better way to implement it than the calendar system in F3, and I imagine this and the manufacturers' loyalty system kind of does give more of a feel like you're part of a racing team rather than some hyper-wealthy dude jumping around from one supercar track day to the next.

Found that tenth on the first clean lap I pulled off... but it took me an hour and a half to get that one clean lap. Mostly it's just waiting til the stars align and you get a lap where the AI cars don't swerve into you or have a picnic on the apex of every corner. It wasn't hard to get low 1:37s with rewind since you don't have to worry about cresting a hill and running into some chump braking into your face.

Please don't beat this I can't take any more of the AI cars abuse :negative:

How long does fanatec usually take to ship their wheels?

I AM THE SCALES OF JUSTICE, CONDUCTOR OF THE CHOIR OF DEATH!

Man, I hate supporting Gamestop, but if they have some LCE in tomorrow that aren't spoken for, i'm going to trade in a metric shitload of old 360 and PS2 games for instore credit so I can get me some sweet, sweet Muscle Car DLC action.

I ended up going to Best Buy this weekend and talked to one of the dudes there. He looked in back and confirmed that they had just enough LCE's to fulfill their in-store orders. I'll be picking mine up on my lunch break tomorrow.

Got my confirmation e-mail from Fanatec saying they're shipping out my wheel, knobs, and pedals. Couldn't figure out how to change my Amazon.com LCE order from 2 day shipping to "release" shipping, so the game will be here by Friday.

Good luck dealing with Best Buy, it looks like they oversold a game again.

I think I'm gonna rush Best Buy at lunch tomorrow as well and make a quick stop at home and start the Downloads going. That way I can get home after work and just ... play.

God - work is going to SUCK tomorrow.

That's not what gaslighting means you hyperbolic dipshit.
I won't be able to puck up the LCE tomorow so I'm wondering... will the Veyron Super Sport be available to people who don't get that version?

The LCE stuff will become available to buy in the future. Probably 6+ months down the road. I'm pretty sure they did the same thing in FM3.

We are an endangered species you and I. We, lovers of speed, we devotees of power, performance, and noise. 'Go away' we are told and take your carbon fiber and fire spitting V12s with you. There's hardly a place for us out here anymore, not amongst all the commuters and congestion, not in this growing age of safety and restraint, where practicality trumps adrenaline, where the ratio of miles to the gallon is championed over horsepower to the weight. The evidence is everywhere, you and I are being squeezed out, pushed aside, and hunted down at every hairpin turn, and yet there is hope. There is a safe haven. A place where we are free to challenge conventions, push the laws of physics and drive our powerful, out beautiful machines hard. It's not a racetrack in Germany or even a highway in Montana, it's not even a real place actually. It's more than that. It's a communal celebration of horsepower, torque, grip, leather, technology, beauty. It is the last bastion of automotive lust, and it's right there, in your living room.

What if I buy the regular game, then get my LCE later on, will it add the crown? I know Gamestop has the ability to buy games used and return them later no questions asked.

Pretty sure it's just a code you enter that enables/downloads the VIP stuff. You don't need a specific LCE game/disk for it to work, just the code itself.

Got my code too, but no mention about them shipping the game yet. :ohdear: Anyone using the controller able to drive well with no assists? I can go without all of them except traction control, I spin out way too much. I'm having trouble easing into the gas, not sure if it's just a limitation of the controller or my fat fingers.

There you are in your home, and the soldiers smash down the door and tell you you're in the middle of World War III. Something's gone wrong with time.

You'll get the hang of it. Just don't mash on it, ease the throttle on slowly out of corners or you'll spin the tyres. If you hear them breaking loose, back off on the throttle right away. Mostly it's a matter of getting to know how much throttle you can give a particular car without losing traction, so just practice more I guess!

I drive with a controller. It's technique. Ease onto the throttle, feather it and make sweet love to it. Don't just slam it on/off.
