Probably won't fix anything, but worth a shot.

No, I did it. It didn't help. It's not a real fix, just placebo.

I did some more testing and everywhere beside my office I get good speeds. This includes outside and nearby, so I think it's the cell. Some insane bs, since I get 4 bars and coworkers on androids see full 1.5mbit, but at least it is usable now. So maybe that update did work.

Edit: Spoke with Sprint, and ended up transfered to an Escalations rep. It's a known issue, about compatibility between the iPhone and Sprint's network. Apple has to make server-side changes and then send out an iPhone update to fix it. I dunno how much of that is accurate and how much is an attempt at technobabble to calm the masses, but my speeds are at least reasonable now, so I'm hoping I'm in it with Sprint for the long haul now.

I'm half wondering if this is their way of figuring out demand, but I would recommend filling this out if you want to see the Galaxy Nexus on Sprint:

I'm still not sure if they didn't apply a filter since Metro PCS is on that list too. Anyway, no harm in filling it out.

Done, god I hope this phone comes to Sprint at some point. I've got an upgrade to use and was going to replace my Evo any day now, but I guess I'll just hold off. I wonder if I should just wait until they start their LTE rollout, assuming they get some nicer new phones then.

I'm going to guess it's a combination of network and phone because I'm in a garden level apartment in midtown Omaha. Disregard that one wifi test, I forgot to turn it off. See how I'm getting zero bars of service? Yeah, that's what I get when I'm pretty much in a quasi-basement. I'll run some more tests when I'm out and about at school today but I'm getting more or less better service than you with what is reading as a piss-poor signal. It's probably the network where you are being congested, and possibly the phone.

And, considering the history of the iPhone 4's antenna I don't want to insinuate that was what I meant - I just mean there are obviously differences in the engineering of a phone and between antenna placement, composition, and signal processing, the phone may be accounting for some of that bad performance. I would be hard-pressed to assume Apple would just outright fail to address such a widely publicized issue.

Whaaat. I'm close to midtown Omaha and over the past two days I consistently got speeds much slower than you. What part of midtwon are you in? I ran tests downtown, around 38th and california, and in the Sprint store on 72nd and Dodge. Also ran the ##UPDATE# thing multiple times throughout with no improvement. My speeds only got to the slowest of your tests maybe two or three times over the 20+ times I tested it over the last couple days. I even tried doing it around 1:00 AM and got similar results (bout .1 to .16 mbps). If I'd been consistently getting your speeds I probably wouldn't have switched. Oh well.

I've got identical sets of tests for pretty much any time of day between 8:00am and 1:00am.

Also--hook your number up to google voice. It's amazing with Sprint and is the thing I'm going to miss most on ATT. I didn't notice any downside whatsover with the direct integration.

At this point, ##UPDATE# looks like it has the same effect as the Close Door button in an elevator - ie if you're lucky, it coincides with something happening, if you're not you're left pushing the button with no effect until something actually does change and/or you feel a placebo effect (speeds jump up momentarily).

Hey guys, I'm looking to get a second pair of eyes on a switch from Tmobile to Sprint I'm thinking of doing. Right now I'm on a family plan with Tmobile that runs me about 145.00 a month. I have an old school blackberry and I am out of contract, my wife has a nexus S and still under contract that would cost me 200bux to break.

I can get a 25% off discount through sprint. Assuming I move to Spring my wife is going to want the new Iphone and I will get the new Galaxy S2. The monthly payment on these two phones for 1500min unlimited everything contract will run 117.00 roughly 130.00 after taxes. However the upfront cost will be 600 bux which includes breaking the tmobile contract and the two new Sprint phones. The ultimate reason I'm switch is because I want Sprints true unlimited plan and the cheaper monthly payment.

Do you guys think it makes sense to move, I would only be saving 15bux a month however I would have true unlimited internet.

Edit: to make things more complicated I call Tmobile to tell them i'm breaking the contract and going to sprint. They offered to reduce my payment down to 110.00 a month for 1000 mins and 2GB of data and waive my this months payment of 145.00 which essentially brings my payment down to 100.00 bux a month for the first year.

Thanks for this. I figured something like this would come out sooner or later. The EVO had the streaming problem you had to do some crazy jump through hoops thing to get it working correct.

That's my post over on sprint users. It worked for me for a while but then my speeds at home dropped back down. However today when I was at the car shop and probably on a different tower I was getting a solid 1M/s so it is apparently possible for the iPhone 4S to get full EVDO data speeds. I'm also seeing various people claim that once they spoke to top-level support Sprint finally acknowledged the issue and the story seems to flip-flop between a Sprint update or an Apple update coming soon.

So the real answer to the crappy iPhone speeds on Sprint is: spin the wheel and maybe you'll get lucky. If not, there may or may not be a real problem and it may or may not be fixed by Apple/Sprint/Dali Llama at some undetermined date in the futurepast.

It's your call, tmobile seems desperate to get new customers and retain old ones, so if they are willing to give you a great retention rate good for you. On the sprint side any stupid poo poo about sprint being able to drop unlimited data on in contract customers is just extremely short sighted. Wireless carriers are able to change optional add ons: ie tethering, insurance, international (in most cases), etc. The main features that are required when you sign a contract do not change and cannot change without voiding your contract: phone internet features, texting and calling. If sprint tries to cap data on contract customers, their contract is voided, end of story. And if it isn't, file with the BBB and be done with it.

Looking at past trends, ATT and Verizon are grandfathering in unlimited customers to some degree for the reason i mentioned: they don't want to void the contract and/or piss the customer off. Let's be real here: sprint cannot sustain unlimited internet for all customers forever. It's too much of a strain. Signing a contract now with sprint guarantees you one thing with unlimited internet: for the next 2 years you get unlimited data with sprint. They can change it once the contract is over, you are not guaranteed in the sake way Verizon does not have to guarantee grandfathering. They may choose to do it, and nobody knows what the future is. So for anyone looking for unlimited internet, weigh the pros and cons, and if its important enough lock it down for 2 years. If not, don't.

And please let's avoid stupid blanket statements on either side of this debate, nothing in wireless is that clear cut for gods sake.

Oh, on a good note: Sprint officially announced the Motorola Admiral:

http://www.phonescoop.com/articles/article.php?a=9125

My only bummer is the 3.1" screen (but has a keyboard at least). This is a god send to anyone on Nextel or needing PTT, assuming there are no bugs. And pricing isn't horrible.

Fyi: promo for at least a month or two is that if you have Nextel right now you may qualify for $0.99 upgrade pricing for the Duramax (flip rugged PTT phone) or Admiral. Aka Sprint is going to start throwing good incentives to retain Nextel customers and switch them to Sprint CDMA PTT. It is definitely focused more on business customers (they are mostly all that is left on Nextel anyway) but I have seen regular customer lines qualify, though not all. Anyone who has any questions on this feel free to PM me.

Sprint has cool gel cases that might do the job, otherwise not sure. $3 amazon.com screen protectors would probably do the trick for the screen.

Something has gone wonky, when I disable WiFi I now see a little "o" instead of 3G. The field test screen confirms no 3G connection. Attempting to browse says "you are not subscribed to any cellular data service"... Then it switched to 3G but while launching the speed test app I saw it flip back to the "o" then back to 3G.. Something wierd is definitely going on.

Today things are working consistently around 1+ mb down and 500-600kbps up. Its time for people to be getting up, so I'll know soon if its congestion. Want to jump on iPhone once things get resolved, which it sounds like is happening via mass work orders to do work on towers or whatever.

I don't understand how this is bad business when you have people using tethering to rack up over 100 GB of data per month. It's not exactly cheap to deliver these services. People make analogies to other countries were data services are cheaper, but they fail to take into account that places like Japan, Germany, and the UK have far fewer square miles to cover. More territory means increased cost of service (from # of towers, to support personnel, to spectrum) and lower profit margins.

Does it suck? Yeah, it does, but what else are you supposed to do when some people use the unlimited service with no regard to other users? It's tough to maintain the unlimited model (again, primarily on tethering and hotspots) when that kind of data usage occurs. Furthermore, Sprint is a company that hasn't recorded a profit for a few years, as opposed to AT&T/Verizon who have record profits. Yet unlimited data is still being offered at a cheaper price point than even the lowest data tiers at AT&T and Verizon. It's a rather simple case of cost reduction while maintaining your sustainable differentiators.

Nonsense. QoS and traffic shaping are old technology now... If someone is raping the tower, your system should automatically throttle them and the problem is solved. At night when no one is using the network they can go full speed. It literally doesn't cost you anything, the equipment is on whether anyone uses it or not and all of the big three are large enough to have peering agreements so they don't pay transit fees (sprint via its fiber network).

In fact GB limits are not optimal because it means I can totally screw a tower and clog it with traffic as long as I do it a few hundred MB at a time.

900ftjesus

Everything will be more expensive and limited in the future. You, the consumer, will be screwed on any chosen carrier because you have no control over anything and the carriers have expensive lawyers and lobbyists.

This thread is for actual information and legitimate questions by Sprint customers or people looking to join Sprint. It is not ok to constantly post "Sprint is losing unlimited data" because that statement is false until they actually announce it. Their last announcement was just before the iPhone launch and it was the exact opposite of that statement.

Again, if you are not a Sprint customer, this is not the thread to rage against the machine for whatever reason. Pretend you're an adult and that you can accept that everything will continue to suck more over time and most people don't want to read your terrible posting.
