Hey people, I just "acquired" the whole No Limit catalog and literally the only artists on there i know anything about is Mystikal and a tiny bit of Master P. Has anything good ever came out of that label? I've been randomly browsing through the various albums and their seems to be a lot of poo poo. Is there any good CDs I should check out first?

Silkk's first album was pretty good.

Soulja Slim, Fiend, and Mia X were the best in the No Limit stable imo. Mia X's solo stuff tended towards fusiony love song poo poo at times, but she could be counted on to rip it on a posse cut. really though just make sure you check out Give It 2 Em Raw, that album is mad slept on

Their latest albums have been pretty boring and they should have hung it up after Phrenology. I know I've listened to them all at least once and couldn't name any song they've done in a long time.

The Bachmann stunt wasn't impressive, creative, or mature. I don't see the value in musically calling a woman a bitch on national TV even if it is true.

Ok, I agree, that was dumb. I was trying to make a joke I guess.

Anyways, in contrast to you I have listened to their last 3 albums quite a bit, I guess since they're the ones that have been released when I was of mature music-listening age. Maybe they aren't as experimental and exciting as their early work, but I think the songs are better crafted, Black Thought has improved, they have better guests, and I don't like that boring slow jazz poo poo anyway (jk).

Disagree with your first point. I think even the worst Roots album ends up better than almost anything else that comes out that year, and they've gotten more political and more serious since Phrenology but they're still great. Roots albums are still big events for me.

Anyway, I'm facebook friends with DaVinci and saw him log on a while ago. I messaged him and we talked for while, he's pretty awesome. If you guys friend him and message him, he will talk to you!

I used to really like The Roots but they've gone downhill since Phrenology. Game Theory and Rising Down were both pretty good albums if you can ignore the fact that they're extremely boring and aren't distinguishable from each other. They were better than Phrenology, but weren't nearly as experimental (although if I actually tried listening to that today I'd probably change my mind since it only sounded different in context to their previous work). Their last album sounded like they were trying to make music for people to fall asleep to, and what I've heard from the new one isn't much different. It sounds like Black Thought heard way back after Phrenology/before Game Theory all the stuff people were saying about him being underrated, and then decided to never rap even the slightest bit different ever again. And I don't know if all the people they lost had more input on production than I thought, but every one of their last few albums have sounded kinda generic. You could make an argument that the best thing ?uestlove ever produced was Baduizm, and he had help with that iirc.

I don't know, I just know that from their first 4 albums even though they had the whole live instruments "gimmick", you could hear progression. Then after Things Fall Apart they just kinda started to sound like a generic rap group.

Haha I thought that was an original Tony Yayo song. I've been trying to get my hands on the instrumental for the longest time but its no where to be found :(. I wonder how Yayo got it.

Edit: Well gently caress, it loops towards the end.... how the gently caress did I miss that.

I think it's fair to say Phrenology and Game Theory were low points, but Rising Down, How I Got Over and the latest disc are very, very good albums. They don't have the same feel as the early stuff with Malik, but they still stand up to other discs released at the same time. IMO, How I got over is the very definition of a sleeper. The more I listen to it, especially PORN's flow on Walk Alone, the better it gets.

New album is no different. Even if the intro song is a waste of time.

Agreed

The price of meat has just gone up, and your old lady has just gone down

Yeah, this is a really good album, I'm re-listening and enjoying it. Is it really considered a "gimmick" that there's instrumentation? I thought by this point that wouldn't be something people point to as being especially significant in a larger context, just one of the elements of their music.

Game Theory is on par with Rising Down and is about 3x as good as How I Got Over (which really sounds like something Common would've made). I do agree, How I Got Over is indeed a sleeper (as in, it puts me to sleep).
