I think this was first posted in the Mid-East Revolt thread a few days ago. It got a bump because Robert Mugabe (the dictator depicted in the ad) is actually pissed enough that it's gotten Nando's Zimbabwe staff into trouble, so they pulled it.

Before they had the spot running twice every commercial break on every single station there is, it wasn't.

Chrysler got sued over the Jenny From The Block commercial. quote:The artists behind a copyrighted mural in the Bronx sued the automaker for using the image without their permission, but The New York Times now reports that the two parties have settled their differences out of court. Neither side is disclosing the details of the settlement at this time, but Fiat and artists TATS Cru have conveniently announced a new collaboration. I don't really understand this one. How do you go about copyrighting a giant mural in an urban area, to the extent that no one is allowed to photograph or record video of it without permission or compensation? More fun from the commercial: the car broke down during filming. At least Fiat's next commercial has to be better.

I guess it's just so commonplace to see other stores, buildings, etc. in commercials/tv/movies that I didn't put much thought in to the production company having to get permission from all of them. Should have filmed from the other side of the street, I guess.

I saw an ad recently that's basically the antithesis of most other ads on TV that I've grown to hate so much. It's for Hamburger Helper. Empty kitchen table in the background, mom opens a cupboard and obscures the table. She calls, "Who wants Hamburger Helper?" and shuts the door, and all of a sudden the table is full of grinning, eager family members. It's simple. It delivers the message the company wants in about 5 seconds. There's no trace of smugness, it doesn't go for cheap laughs at the expense of any one character or group (e.g. "Haha that man is so stupid/whipped"). And it still manages to be clever. It's just about the perfect ad.

I must preface this by saying that we never have the volume on at work, so most ads I see, I don't hear. That being said, the new Wendy's commercial with the baby eating a pile of messy food, and the dad eating a burger and being just as messy is so god drat adorable it makes me want to throw up. That baby does the most hilarious head waggle I've ever seen, like "gently caress yeah I'm eatin this food and it's awesome".
