If there's any ereader that deserves scorn it's any Pandigital device. I've helped a few people at my job with those, and the hardware and OS simply aren't sufficient for what the devices try to do. In my brief experiences, Pandigital ereaders were slow, unresponsive, and used cluttered menus. If Pandigital's gotten its act together in the past couple months then I apologize, but I've yet to see something by them worth taking home.

The Kobo is fine, as long as you haven't used a Nook or Kindle. It's just not as responsive.

Does anyone know if the Nook Simple Touch handles PDFs any different than the 1st gen? I'd like to use it for recipes and patterns for things, but the Nook resizes text and throws off the formatting, making it difficult to follow. I might consider one of the cheaper tablets, as long as they just zoom and don't resize. Also, what would be a reasonable price to ask if selling my 3G Nook?

Anyone have a case recommendation for a Kindle Touch? The Amazon Touch case doesn't have as good of reviews as the Keyboard so maybe there is room for a 3rd party to move in. The 3rd party ones are cheaper too.

I got this case for my Kindle Touch: http://www.amazon.com/Marware-Eco-Vue-Kindle-Touch-Cover/dp/B005HSG446/ref=sr_1_12?s=digital-text&ie=UTF8&qid=1324248704&sr=1-12 I'm pretty darn happy with it so far. It's very snug, looks great, and feels well-made. It's got a handle for you to put your hand in, in the back. It still doesn't make reading a one-handed experience unless you have big hands or don't ever need to go backward, but it is really comfortable after the first ~hour of use. I got mine using a half-off special offers coupon so it was under $20. Totally worth it.

About to get the lady a Kindle for her birthday. Probably going to Best Buy and grabbing a Kindle 4. Just a high quality, affordable eReader is all she's looking for. Is Best Buy a terrible place to buy, compared to online vendors? I'm googling and googling and it doesnt seem like there's a great deal anywhere unless I'm missing something. Any comments on a different model of Kindle to buy are welcome, but if my understanding is correct the basic Kindle 4 is what I want for someone who just wants books and has no need for 3g. What's up with the keyboard? Is the web browser good enough to warrant paying extra for the keyboard?

It's fine price-wise, although they may not have all the models. And I'm not sure if they give the choice of ads vs. no-ads, or even if they have the ad version. If you buy at Amazon, you can get the power plug for $10 with the purchase instead of $15, but that's about the only diff and you may not want that. And I have a Kindle 3 and use the keyboard once every few months. Mainly to search for something like a character name earlier in the book. Actually, I usually rotate the screen and use the keyboard part as the handle, so I do appreciate having it there.

Also, if the web browsing part is a big selling point for you, you might be better off looking at a kindle fire or another tablet. Web browsing on e-ink is doable, but its not really cut out for it.

I am working on a home-made solution. Leather lined with microfiber. My wife wants a neoprene case for hers, one of the ones that folds over in front at the top. Someone on Etsy hollows out old books (nothing neat, they're using remaindered textbooks IIRC) with a clip inside to hold the Nook.

I went with this one. Nothing fancy, but it will keep the screen from getting damaged. I also like that it clips onto the Nook. No elastic straps to deal with. http://www.barnesandnoble.com/p/lew...n=9780594017349

The main thing you want with a case or cover, is to protect the device from twisting or warping that might occur if you stuff it into your back pack or whatever. But nearly all cases to this anyway, so basically don't waste your money on one of those neoprene sleeves. If you're taking it outside, get a case/cover.

I'm looking at buying an eReader in Australia, and I'm wondering if anybody could offer their opinion as to what would be the best option. The Kindle 4 and Kindle Keyboard 3G are available, although Amazon fixes the price on these units in Australia, and the cheapest I can buy these is $139 and $219 respectively. Other options of note include the Kobo Touch at $137 and the Sony PRS-T1 at $179 At the moment I'm considering the Kobo Touch, it seems to offer good features for the price, but I'm reading conflicting reports online regarding the quality of this unit. The Kindle 4 gets good reviews online as a cheap eReader, but the fact that it's approx. 75% more expensive in Australia I wonder if it's even worth buying.

Nobody's making braced wrought iron cases. I just want to defend the screen from poking/scraping. Also, I learned something cool about neoprene the other day, if you have a neoprene sleeve on your device and you drop it in the cat's water dish, the neoprene will take a couple seconds to wick water around its internal structure before the water makes it to the device; it was my phone and it was bone-dry even though the neoprene was soaked. I was shocked and pleased.

I personally think the kindle is still worth buying, but if you can get a better deal on the kobo touch that isn't a bad option. Read the reviews online and compare and contrast which ecosystem you want. Whatever you do, avoid the kobo tablet (different then the touch).

I'd like to here some opinions on the Kindle touch v. Kindle 4. I can get the K4 severely discounted because I have Amazon.com gift cards, but I'd have to get the touch somewhere else because I live in a third world country that Amazon won't ship their more advanced devices to. Is the touch that much better? Is it even really better at all? I would think that the slow response of an e-ink screen would make for a frustration touch experience, but I haven't actually been able to try one to see for myself.

I bought the Touch because it's only $20 more than the Kindle 4 in the USA. I don't consider the touch features a big deal, I mostly bought it because it has double the battery life and I guess the virtual keyboard is a little more convenient if I ever have to use it. If it was more than a $20 difference I'd just get the Kindle 4.

FreelanceSocialist posted:Is the X-Ray feature on the Kindle Touch worth it? I might be wrong on this, but it seems that the X-Ray feature just uses metadata added to a book by Amazon, it doesn't actually do any parsing on the Kindle. This means PDFs you put on it aren't going to have the x-ray feature. This is my theory because I don't think any of the Project Gutenberg books have x-ray information. I could be wrong though, and can check when I get home.

Pretty sure I'm getting a Kindle Touch for Christmas. That said, I'm curious about jailbreaking/rooting it. What cool stuff can I do with a rooted Kindle? I use an iPhone, so I'm used to a shitload of neat tweaks that should have already been implemented by Apple anyway. Second question is pertaining to how easy it is to "undo" the root? With an iPhone, I can just hit a certain button combo and put it in a restore state where everything goes back to stock firmware with no residual effects. Can I do the same with the Kindle Touch if I end up messing something up?

Heads up, Amazon's Kindle app for iPhone and iPad was just updated to allow you to download your Send-to-Kindle docs. This means that books emailed to your @Kindle email can be read on iPad and you can use WhisperSync on books other than books bought from the Amazon store. It's awesome because I had a few books that were mobi's that I had emailed to my @kindle email and now I can read them on my phone without worrying about keeping my last page read synced up.

My Kindle 3 has those hairline cracks in the bottom two corners of the screen. I've just noticed them for the first time, and given that it was a Christmas present last year, I suspect it's just out of warranty (Assuming the standard warranty is a year). Thing is, I'm planning to get the Kindle 4 very soon anyway, and give this Kindle 3 to my mother. What will happen to those hairline cracks? What are the chances that Amazon in the UK will replace it for free even though it was bought over a year ago?
