Yeah, in the "unreal" key bindings it's shift. Make sure you're pressing regular walk and not run, and then hold shift down to walk extra slow. You make some noise but it's cut down to a fraction of what you would make taking running steps.

Flying blackjacks can be especially useful around loud surfaces. With timing you can knockout a guard before your feet hit the floor, ninja style. Hold down attack to prime the blackjack, get a running jump/fall and then release in mid-air when close enough.

And remember, if there are gaps in carpets or anything, you can jump over tile and land soundlessly back on the soft ground. I actually really liked the lost city. Those praying mantises freaked me out. Really scary stuff for the day.

I'm been doing that since The Sword level when I ran out of moss arrows. I was goofing around and never thought it would actually work so well. Leaning forward and blackjacking enemies looking at you works well too. VisAbsoluta posted:Regarding Thief, should I use any of the premade keyboard settings or make a custom one? I'd say go with custom. Make sure you bind blackjack and flash bombs to an easily reachable button as you will want to be able to pull it out on a moment's notice.

ToxicFrog posted:Given the context, I'm not sure I agree with this. Yeah, Thief 2 (like Thief 1!) has some fantastic levels, like Life of the Party and First City Bank & Trust - but it also has some stinkers, like Kidnap and Sabotage at Soulforge. Given that Mundus loved every prior level but is now ready to give up on the game entirely just because of The Lost City, I suspect that he'd have the same experience halfway through Thief 2 as well. But the horrible levels in Thief 2 never overstay their welcome (except Soulforge gently caress that level), and Kidnap specifically (which I agree sucks) can be finished in about 20 minutes if you just concentrate on the objectives. I just feel like Thief 1 was experimenting with gameplay and levels and some of them fall flat, and Thief 2 tightens everything up and gets most everything right and is a better overall experience. pixelbaron fucked around with this message at 05:22 on Feb 13, 2012 |

Regarding Thief, I decided to help all newcomers here. Here's the quick n' easy guide to upgrade the GOG versions from 'Good as they were in the 90s' to 'Good as they can be today'. Thief 1 Gold Buy the game and install. Download TGFix 1.05. Unpack to your Thief directory. Edit Cam.CFG to set your custom resolution, if you want above 1024 x 768. Optional: Download this DDFix.ini and overwrite yours. It contains some graphical presets which give you automatic HDR-esque night vision and improves the lighting in general. Thief 2: The Metal Age Buy the game and install. Download the latest TafferPatcher Beta. Best to tick every addon/tweak - they're all good. Follow the wizard and pick your resolution and other perks. Optional: Download this DDFix.ini and overwrite yours. It contains some graphical presets which give you automatic HDR-esque night vision and improves the lighting in general. Thief 2X: Shadows of The Metal Age (Excellent fan-made expansion) Do all the Thief 2 stuff above. Download T2X from the official site and install. Open Darkinst.cfg in \Thief 2\T2X\ and comment out (add a ; at the start) to the line that reads 'cd_path \' Optional: For more feature support, download the latest DDFix from here. Unpack it to your T2X directory. No need to get the 'pre-patched' EXE. Optional: Download this DDFix.ini and overwrite your T2X version. It contains some graphical presets which give you automatic HDR-esque night vision and improves the lighting in general. And you can find hundreds upon hundreds of recommended Thief 1 & 2 levels on this site here. T2X is widely considered by many to be the cream of the crop, though. 10 minutes of effort now will provide a great deal of thievery-packed joy later. Finished 'Shipping... And Receiving' last night, took 1 hour 51 minutes. I don't get to say immersive very often anymore but Thief is crazy immersive. It's cool just how involving each mission becomes, the gameplay has you intensely focused the entire time. Missions start as big unknowns that you slowly piece together as you explore. By the end you've gotten intimately familiar with the place. Each mission stands as it's own experience and you can probably only stomach one session at a time without a break in between. Technically I guess that means it has terrible pacing and the intensity should be carefully dosed throughout the entire game but instead Thief gives you one concentrated experience after another and you set the pace. Just something you don't see anymore.

It's interesting to note the difference in level design methodology between T1 and T2. In the latter, so the dev team claimed, they created the levels first and fit the objectives into them, completely the inverse of T1. This is very noticeable when comparing the first levels of each - Bafford's Mansion does not at all seem like a place where someone could live.

Okay, here's mine. All fairly standard WASD stuff, with Z, X & C being the lean keys. Q and E cycle through inventory, Tab clears item. It's for Thief 2. Not sure if it'll work on the first game without grumbling, though.

So I just got to the return to the cathedral level in Thief gold and would like to apologize about my bitching about lost city. Why? Because this level is just abysmal. I can't believe I didn't like lost city now that I have the utter bottom of the barrel to compare it to. With that said, is there a way to skip levels? I give up trying to pass this legitimately. I don't mind sneaking around super-speed haunts but when doors start closing in your face and you have to take several leaps of faith into rooms and hope for the best I just can't do it. I was doing fine up until a ghost gave me a fetch quest and I have to stay longer in this shithole. I also looked it up and after I give him his items I have to go back and bury his buddy. gently caress that.

In my opinion Silent Assassin still holds up pretty well. Its biggest flaw is probably that the developers didn't realize yet that quality > quantity when it comes down to levels. Some of them are really forgettable and there's one you WON'T forget because it's really awful (Hidden Valley). Still, controls and AI behaviour are both far better than the first game. It helps that the sequel allowed you to save during a level too.

Some of Silent Assassin's levels are the finest in the franchise, but I remember that the mechanics of the game were extremely frustrating at some points and nowhere near the Contracts and (specially) Blood Money amounts of fun. God, talking about it, I wish GOG would get over that single track bullshit and get Contracts

I lost interest in the Hitman series on the Japan level in Hitman 2. The gameplay feels like a first-person Commandos, where you are basically compelled to puzzle out the optimal outcome through trial and error. What's so great about Contracts?

I just remember being trapped below ground with ratmen and spiders for an eternity. Escape! makes the other monster missions seem like pure gold. In fact the Bonehoard and Lost City are gems IMO. Mantling and rope arrows; it's like Tomb Raider and it works. Even the zombies and burricks are welcome cohabitants in a harmless "that's cute" sort of way, they're just curiosities in between you and your loot.

You could even take the place of the guy with the pistol on the stage, and shoot the actor target in the middle of the performance. If I remember the Hitman thread correctly, people even said you could get away with it as an "accident" if you timed it just right.

Even better, you could replace the actor's gun with a real one without anyone noticing, make him do your dirty work. As good as Blood Money is (never bothered with the other Hitman games) I never found "all out assault" to be really viable. I tried recreating scenes from No Country for Old Men using a silenced shotgun but always got swamped by enemies and killed within seconds, since there was no way to conceal larger weapons.

Very few "action" levels are in Contracts. Absolutely no action levels exist in Blood Money. It's still a puzzle game, and there's still some trail and error, but it's really about exploration. In most of the missions, you can spend as much time as you need to explore and find the solution to your current target. Blood Money is the pinnacle of this sandbox gameplay that makes it hugely different from Hitman 1 and 2.

Big old spoiler for Hitman 2: the second last level is one of the best twist moments in gaming. You get your target, same as any other mission. You collect the rifle and move to the ideal spot to snipe from. All business as usual so far. Line him up in your sights, pull the trigger and...nothing. You realise you've been given blanks and also your target looks a little...wooden. The whole thing's a set up. That reminds me: later releases of 2 had a level cut due to some controversy. I'd assume it's missing from this version too but can anyone confirm? synertia posted:I haven't played Blood Money. If you aren't too interested in taking in the whole series or putting up with aged mechanics, controls and graphics from the earlier games then go straight to Blood Money. Otherwise 2 is worth playing. It has some annoying sections and the detection AI is pretty unfair at times but there are occasions of brilliance if you can wade through the bad.

You like missions where you have little time to prepare and follow one fixed path with no room for error or you die quickly? There are about three. Three missions where you are running. The game is so bad about disguises that being in front or behind random distracted civilians in a police outfit, can determine if you get outed instantly. (you walk in front to get by)
