I like Em and the Madd Rapper and they are nothing if filled with sarcasm and irony. The Madd Rapper was really slept on, his album was really good as a swan song of not so serious but serious 90's rap.

Yeah I mean I think the term irony is thrown around in a way that is more demeaning, which is part of what bothers me, but you're totally correct that irony and sarcasm are certainly used in hip hop.

I think the problem is that when people talk about nerdcore as "ironic", it doesn't just mean "this music employs irony", it means more "The joke is that I'm using a musical style to talk about subjects infrequently discussed in this style, and I don't resemble the sort of person you would expect to create this style". And that sort of framing of the music really does diminish the artistic value of the music, it's tied up in racial stereotypes and just comes off as very crass.

Kendrick put this out today and its probably the best thing I've ever heard from him. It goes from sounding like Anticon to more modern spacey heavy beats on the verses. Never listened to Gunplay before but he comes correct on this.

No offense, but how do you listen to something like this? It doesn't even sound like music. I guess it's cool that he can talk like that but it doesn't sound like a song or music in any way. It sounds like someone rhyming off beat with no flow at all.

Yeah I'm probably the biggest DOOM dude here (I'd legit put him in top 5 ever, and he's prob my personal fav MC) but I can't get into that AT ALL. Like, it's almost like a bad version of some of the stuff on Madvillian. DOOM's not always been the best for following a beat, but this is just like there's some dudes decided to play when he was practicing different flows or something.

I think its kinda cool. He doesn't sound off beat, it just sounds closer to spoken word.

If you like the beats you can grab them from http://thirdworlds.net/index.php Black Google. They released the stems (separate audio for vocal/drums/synth) to allow people to remix it freely. I wish more bands did that.

I thought the same thing and downloaded the tape. Not everything is done strictly in that vocal style. Don't get me wrong, it's all raw, but not quite as... yelled as they are in that track. It's definitely worth the download though.

quote:

When I was first exposed to nerdcore I thought "oh, cool. A bunch of dudes who aren't being held down by the stereotypical lyrical trappings of hip hop", but as time went on I've come around to a similar point of view.

I do want to ask this though: can someone be involved with hip hop without having to adhere to the look and lingo? I mean, when it comes to listening to music I think everyone has a pretty similar opinion: listen to what you like, who cares. But, here's my problem: I started doing this podcast with a few friends and we play hip hop music, but I don't have any qualities in my voice that could even remotely be considered urban. And I talk the most. As a result I have NO idea how to begin to market the show. I know, I know "it's a podcast, what does it matter?" well for someone trying to get into the radio industry: it's kind of important.

I mean, you listen to radio and it just sounds like hype men and I don't want to usurp that kind of personality, just wouldn't be me. Thoughts?

Gunplay has made a ton of improvement since he was selling his CD's at Carol Mart (he still is) a few years ago. If Waka and Plies and Gorilla Zoe can be legitimate unit movers (debatable) then Gunplay can play in that street-thug lane, especially with the MMG machine behind him.

Just throwing this out there...I went on Holy Ship this year which is a 3 day electronic music cruise. Anyway Riff Raff was there and we saw him a bunch just hanging out with his "crew", which consisted of 2 of the goofiest young 20 year olds I've ever seen. Me and my friend made it a point to say what's up to a him a few times throughout the weekend just for shits and giggles. He was obviously out of his element the entire time but god drat the guy just seemed so uncomfortable and honestly shy. We ate dinner at the buffet at the table across from him, and he was the 5th person at a 4 person booth just sitting on the end not talking the whole time. I know his whole act is obviously just that, an act, but I honestly just kind of felt bad from him.

Not to mention I heard people calling him a loser and a human being about 15 feet away from him. Dude's definitely got some money though, when we were disembarking one of the staff came up to him telling him he had a few hundred left on his room card and he would have to come claim it. He just refused to get out of line to collect his money and instead gave it to the cruise. It was kind of interesting to see a "celebrity" or whatever you want to call him just being the odd one out the entire time.

e: never thought I would ever write that much about Riff Raff...

Yeah I still can't tell if his recent album is supposed to be taken at face value. It seems like it maybe should be, but some of the lines/etc make it sound more like a "concept album" or something. Either way it's really good.

And dude I dont think his lifestyle tats and drug habits are based on parodying black culture, so im not sure how he can be a minstrel show. Is 4 pound a minstrel show? Is like...yellawolf whats accetable? I heard his album and it kinda sucked. Diff strokes tho. :)

Thanks for sharing your ideas about the podcast. I think the reason I'm a bit conscious about delivery and presentation is because it's more of a talk show then a music show. If I was just playing songs and saying what's playing I'd worry a little less. But we're going for a morning show type of thing. I'll definitely take some time to check out the other shows suggested. We haven't gotten any feedback on the show positive or negative so I have no idea how the show's received, or maybe rather perceived.
