I got like 7th or 8th row tickets to Distant Worlds in Chicago a few years back.

Upside: They premiered Dancing Mad with Uematsu on Hammond Organ.
Downside: It was a < 5 minute arrangement even though they played all the way through One Winged Angel for the finale and then played the whole thing again right after for the encore. :sigh:

I am so envious. I missed the Distant Worlds in London last October, so hopefully I can book tickets in time for the next event.

The SimCity 4 Rush Hour soundtrack is really excellent music and great for a little background noise when working on something else. Electronic Arts used to host the whole album as a free download, but they appear to have scrapped their SimCity website entirely.

Anyway, since they gave it away for free since its release I'm assuming it's okay to post this link, and you can find the album here.

Here's a good track:

Shadow of the Colossus has some pretty great tracks. My favorite thing in particular is how each giant has its own track building up to when they become vulnerable or are getting attacked. It's never a dull moment for the ears.

Shadow of the Colossus OST, T12: A Violent Encounter

Shadow of the Colossus OST, T13: Revived Power

Shadow of the Colossus OST, T08: The Opened Way

And while I certainly wouldn't recommend playing Jak II or Jak 3, I do think the games have some good soundtracks.

Jak II OST: Haven Forest

Jak II OST: Race with Erol (This song reminds me of every single electronic race theme that ever showed up on the PSX)

Jak 3 OST: Volcano

One I can't believe I forgot to mention... I can't really speak for the sequel since I haven't played it but Shenmue had a great soundtrack which isn't surprising as one of the main composers was Yuzo Koshiro (i.e. Streets of Rage, Ys and other stuff). There's really nice orchestral pieces, really nice vaguely ambient songs for wandering around, lots of good action music, catchy stuff and music that sounds intentionally dated and done on old synthesizers and such to go with the 1980s setting.

Please don't do this. I'm all for posting about a composer you like, but the last thing this thread needs is a slapfight over why this composer is awesome and that composer is not. People have different tastes, and no amount of :spergin: is going to change that. Just let it go. You don't have to remove the links, or edit your post. Just don't get into silly or stupid arguments over a video game composer.

If it was made by the original composer, then that's fine. If it was featured in a video game at some point, that's also fine. If it was featured in a remix album (like the many FF piano albums), then you're good to post it in the thread. Fan remixes are a different story. I'd like to avoid stuff like "random thing I found on youtube" or "band that does video game remixes," since that seems more like something that would deserve its own thread. If the remixer is a composer who works in the game industry, though, that's okay.

A few weeks ago, I was led to the work of someone named Tim Follin. He was very active in the late 80's and early 90's and wrote some nifty jams. I'm somewhat fond of prog, and I smell a bit of influence on his work.

And finally, Pictionary. I'm picturing a meeting with investors where someone asks "can't someone just use $1 worth of pencil and paper for this and play normally? Why would they drop $50 or whatever?" and the producer responds "we've got this guy... he writes amazing music"

In terms of newer stuff, the Humble Bundles have been a nice source of game music. I haven't even bothered to install most of the games, but I've enjoyed my donations' worth from the music alone :). Some highlights:

Frozen Synapse: Complexity

Trine: Tower of Sarek

Jamestown: Credits

And for the picks that most folks will be familiar with:

Secret of Mana: The Second Truth From The Left - This sort of personifies the soundtrack to me. Lots of lighthearted, percussive stuff and awesome bass riffs.

Final Fantasy Tactics: Attack Team - Stuck in my head...

Legend of Zelda Wind Waker: The Great Sea - Calm, but epic

Soul Edge: Edge of Soul - Cheesy, but rockin'

Chrono Trigger: Chrono's Theme - The first full track of an amazing soundtrack

Final Fantasy 3/6: Terra's Theme/overworld - I enjoyed this one so much that I always had trouble progressing past that event in the game that changes the overworld music. Suffice to say, it's my favorite. Here's the Distant Worlds orchestral version:

If it was made by the original composer, then that's fine. If it was featured in a video game at some point, that's also fine. If it was featured in a remix album (like the many FF piano albums), then you're good to post it in the thread. Fan remixes are a different story. I'd like to avoid stuff like "random thing I found on youtube" or "band that does video game remixes," since that seems more like something that would deserve its own thread. If the remixer is a composer who works in the game industry, though, that's okay.

Ok, when you say "remix album" do you mean any kind of official LP or something done by a dedicated group (Like many of the free remixed OSTs done by OCR) or anything done by an official composer? The example you gave was a group of works done by Nobuo Uematsu, So I'm guessing the former.

Sorry for being daft, I'm just confused if "remix album" was meant to be defined in a broader or more narrow sense.

Anyway, have some trailer music from Poker Night at the Inventory among other things.

Poker Night at the Inventory Teaser Music - Fugue and Dies Irae

Demon's Souls OST - Maiden Astraea

Jet Set Radio Future OST - Concept of Love

Bastion OST - Bynn the Breaker

Yeah, I mean official remix albums. Stuff from OCR would fall under the fan remix category. So stuff like the NieR tribute album - Echo would be okay, since it was officially commissioned (even though the artists for Echo had nothing to do with the original NieR).

Speaking of which, go listen to Echo:

On the topic of remakes: Capcom released 2 albums during their Mega Man 20th anniversary celebration for the first 6 mega man games. One album was techno based, the other rock based. I found most of the songs to be really well redone, and picked out my favorites.
