Can anyone recommend some albums that have really industrial-sounding beats. A friend gave me a Techno Animal CD (Brotherhood of the Bomb) about 8 or 9 years ago in high school, and I remember digging the production - the MC is definitely hit or miss, though. Here's a sample Cruise Mode 101.

If you're into dancehall, check out The Bug, esp. the early stuff. It's great.

Also, people seem to be talking about Death Grips quite a bit, that might be worth a look!

I tried really hard to find production that sounded like what the Bomb Squad did on Fear of a Black Planet and AmeriKKKa's Most Wanted and someone pointed me towards Techno Animal. Those two albums have some of the most dissonant and heavy beats out there, I love it. Not as distorted or harsh as Techno Animal, but I get a similar vibe (even though I hate all the rapping on Techno Animal's songs).

Going way back to like 85, there's Mark Stewart, who was in the Pop Group before, put out an album with noisy hip hop beats and political slogans. Its great, but not the same style as Techno Animal

I'd never heard of him before he did that Step Brothers tape with Starlito and don't really know his back catalog but his new tape Guerrilla with DJ Drama just came out this week and is pretty nice (I really like this Yung Ladd cat's beats), so I'd say start with that. He has like ten sponsored tapes up on datpiff so you can grab way more of his poo poo than you could easily listen to if you want.

I think CanOx is the closest thing out of these two to what I'm looking for, and that Viktor Vaughn album is my one my favorite Doom albums.

Also, speaking of Cannibal Ox, how is Vast Aire's solo stuff?

I'd check Fantastic Damage and Ill Sleep When You're Dead (El-P's solo albums), don't know if they're exactly industrial but I know they got a harsh sound.

Vast Aire's solo stuff is very underwhelming. It's not horrible, but it doesn't seem like he can carry a whole album.

Don't know why I just found out that Young Buck signed to MMG, but to add to that, TI has signed Trae the Truth to Grand Hustle (http://www.mtv.com/videos/news/744687/ti-introduces-new-members-of-grand-hustle.jhtml) Personally I think this
move is well past overdue for Trae. I was concerned he would fade after being banned from Houston's radios so this could be a really good opportunity.
Now if someone can convince Stat Quo to start rapping again, maybe he'd get another shot at from a major...

I've been missing from the thread so if I'm late or repetitive, feel free to ignore this.

I'm sure you've probably heard it before, but the Son of Bazerk album produced by the Bomb Squad kinda gets forgotten sometimes and it's really good too. The beats aren't quite as aggressive as the PE/Cube album ones, but they have a funky element to them that I'm a huge fan of.

I heard it's a deal for ABN, not just Trae. He doesn't have a manager, so I hope some of the Grand Hustle people can guide him, cause he's definitely still in street mode.

I really hope it is a deal for ABN rather than Trae because almost every one of Trae's flows sounds the same now. The cadence or whatever that he used for "I'm On" seems like the one he uses on almost every song.
I still listen to It Is What It Is pretty often. The production was pretty good and then having Z-Ro and Trae together is such an easy sell. After Z-Ro's last album (Meth?) my expectations for any ABN output are low, but I'd still love to see something.

This is the right thread (sort of)!

I'd recommend any of his TDE associates (Schoolboy Q who recently released an amazing album, Ab Soul, or Jay Rock). Kembe X is a newer dude who I find somewhat similar, but not as good. If you're looking for older stuff, I'd actually recommend Common Sense as someone who was very similar. One Be Lo also gives me Kendrick vibes (although he doesn't switch up his flow nearly as much). MAYBE you'd like earlier Heiro/Del stuff too (production's gonna be a bit different).

DJs want to be THE dude, and if they are the one dropping an exclusive tape it gives them cred, pretty simple explanation actually, it identifies who is breaking a particular tape or artist and also creates a sort of political connection (who is down with who) as well

why are they so loving loud and annoying? that is a better question

ninja e:

sometimes used to identify unofficial versions or even single out specific copies so they know who's rear end to kick for leaking something, i know some early versions of CDs say "this is so and so's copy" at the beginning, this usage is copy protection

sometimes it is good for the DJ to be associated with the tape, and sometimes the artist is offered an advantage for having a well known DJ cosigning their poo poo, also gives the material a live feel instead of a bunch of demo tracks that might be lackluster or unfinished versions
