Asus CS in general is pretty horrible.

I bought the only Transformer Prime within 75 miles and the charging cable was defective. I called and asked if they could send me a new one (I even offered to give a deposit, it's a cable that costs them $2) and I would send the old one back. The guy said I could either send them the cable first, and get a new one mailed back to me in 2-4 weeks after a technician looked at the cable, or just buy one from their website for $20.

One guy on XDA had to send the whole tablet back even though he had two and could confirm the device was fine.

It does seem that Asus are just not ready for the volumes of the tablet market.

In other news I'm legitimately amazed that my cheap, second hand, no warranty Acer A500 is still working flawlessly - Acer has such an appalling rep with PCs compared to Asus. I just hope the ICS update doesn't kill it.

That's the upside of cheap crap, they have zero incentive to beat out the latest and greatest so sometimes a really solid device with decent (but not amazing) specs happens. Good designers have to start somewhere, and until the guys working for the top tier companies die or get fired, they have to work somewhere too.

It's not defective it's just that ICS is very unstable. Prior the the ICS update it never, not once rebooted so its not hardware.

So yeah, I guess I am sticking someone else with it. I only paid $350 for the unit and dock so I'm not losing by pricing it to sell. In no way am I about to try an RMA. Caveat emptor.

Eh I've had more of the opposite with my TF101. It was ok with honeycomb but I have really really enjoyed using it with ICS. I've not had any hangups or any funny sort of thing at all. 0 issues with mine since ICS update. Anecdotal I know, but just my experience.

Ahem, not to mention Google Voice or iMessage replacing SMS. The distinction between tablet and phone is breaking down more and more everyday. Soon it will be "pocketable personal computing device" vs. "non-pocketable personal computing device," and archaic terms like "telephone" will fade away. Especially with an LTE tablet and data plan, I don't see why you'd need to pay for a separate phone, voice plan, and data plan. It would save a ton of money not to do that.

Apologies for the iPad pic, I couldn't find a similar accessory for a Transformer or Xoom, but I assume they exist. Worst case scenario you get a bluetooth headset and look a little douchey.

There isn't all that much they can do other than limiting data plans even more than they already have.

Most of the people I know would be able to manage quite well making calls where they have access to wifi, with the occasional important on the go call being done on LTE/3g. It's a similar situation to the younger generation being able to do without cable television-- plenty of people can (or have to) avoid buying cable television because of obscene costs-- They get their entertainment through netflix/other methods.

Yeah no, you see, normal people would prefer not to say "pocketable personal computing device" when they can just say "phone" or maybe "mobile" or "cell". Not to mention that the other thing would cover pretty much every other kind of computer from gamerfreak giant towers to just larger phones that dont fit in every pocket.

That level of instability seems less ICS, and more due the fact that ASUS rushed the update out with the intention of patching issues which arise as they go (as per usual), which inevitably did thanks to their seemingly high rate inter-unit variability. You're right to bail.

ICS really is significantly better.

Let me put it this way, imagine you wanted to spend your $300 on a vacation and you told your significant other (or, if you have no such thing, your Internet friends) that you really wanted to go to a tropical island. You can't afford the Seychelles, or maybe you just don't like it because it's elitist, fascist and French. In that case, ICS is like Hawaii--everything works, it can be a little rough sometimes if you wander off the beaten path, but for the most part it's exactly what it says on the brochure. HC is like Puerto Rico--it isn't fun, certain parts of it will actively fight against your having fun, regular things like buying a decent sandwich are mind-numbingly difficult and if you wander into the wrong places you may get blown up by the US Navy. Now, I know what you're thinking, maybe one day Puerto Rico will become a state, and you'll be able to have your Hawaii experience on an island that more suits your idea of what size an island should be, but have you seen Congress's track record for statehood for its non-contiguous territories? And don't forget that mad Puerto Ricans shot up Congress sixty years ago--I'm not sure if that fits in this metaphor or not, but maybe that's like, Twitter, or something.

My point is, Honeycomb runs in Spanish.

Such graceful, delicate creatures.
Sigh. I work at a Sprint reseller, and we have a Wi-Fi Xoom sitting in the back of the store. It was very briefly a display, we never got any in to sell and it was taken down about a month after it was put out. It's also the only one still in stock across all our stores, and it's been there for months.

I've been considering buying it if I can talk them into marking it down (it's fine, but it's got nasty adhesive crap all over the back from the alarm) but the $199/$249 Nexus tablet rumors are making me think twice.

I don't think I'd actually NEED the newer tablet for anything, I'd just feel like I spent a bunch of money (which is tight for me right now) on something really old for no reason. Though the bigger screen on the Xoom would be nice.

How well does a Xoom hold up these days, compared to the latest tablets? I'm no stranger to rooting and installing custom roms if it makes a difference.

It has parity with pretty much all of the 10.1" class android tablets, save those on Tegra3. I love mine with ICS, but it is definitely a device that is about to be left behind by every metric.

I won't be using 3G or 4G ever, just WiFi. I'm out of work right now so I shouldn't be dropping $500 on anything except bills. I just wanted to treat myself to something with my tax return, but maybe I'll just wait. If I remember correctly the Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 7.0 that's coming out has ICS but worse specs. I just want a friggin' tablet and I'm sick of waiting for more things to come out. If I wait for the 2 7.0 or the Google 7.0 to come out I could be waiting for a year.
