Yep, Nas comes out with this song every 3-5 years. You love the beat fools!

Man I've been going through this thread checking out the youtube links and recommendations, I'm only on p26 and my list of music to buy is getting so long I figured I might as well just ask you guys what I should listen to as someone completely new to rap who only really knows about Biggie, Wu Tang and Eric B & Rakim.

I guess an interesting way of doing it would be listing your top 5 rap albums in terms of what you really enjoy/couldn't be without - not necessarily albums you think are the greatest rap albums.

This is my list of things to get so far, by the way...

quote:

Royce da 5’9”; Tech N9ne; Joe Budden; Busta Rhymes; Twista; Three 6 Mafia; Bk-One; Andre Legacy; Big KRIT; Mobb Deep; Mr. Lif; Juggaknots - clear blue skies; Gangstarr; Goodie Mob // cee lo; The Roots; Wacka Flocka Flame - Flockaveli; Fat Trel's last mixtape (Luger Beats); Juicy J-Rubba Band Business 1&2; Juicy J and Project Pat - Play Me Some Pimpin 2; G-Side - The One... Cohesive; Lil Boosie - Redemption; Field Mob - Brotha 2 Brotha; mos def -BLACK on both sides; **percee p**; killer mike; living legends - classic; snoop dogg

Get a bunch of curren$ys mixtapes and albums (covert coup and pilot talk are my favorites), get young jeezys trap or die 2 tape (if.you don't like this tape you prob won't like jeezy), get wiz khalifas cabin fever tape (best thing he's ever done) get all of outkasts discography except idlewild, get all of Clipse's albums, get all the Freddie gibbs.

Most the things I suggested are mixtapes so you can try the artists out free so you don't have to buy something you may not like

i would say if u dont like TM101 then u dont like jeezy, trap or die 2 is great, but not really the definite jeezy but a mile. i mean drat tm101 is one of the few albums i can think were a rapper really defined his whole persona so completely on one disc. like jeezys subject matter maybe be limited but gently caress it, he said everything he ever needed to say on that album.

TM101 and the vast majority of the original Trap or Die mixtape. We Luv Ya is my most played Jeezy track. It's hook is spot on when you feeling flyin den a mahfuckahhhh.

Also, if he likes Juicy on Rubber Band Business, he should check out Three 6 Mafia and HCP in general. Really, most anything from Most Known Unknown or earlier can be pretty solid. But I'm also a huge HCP Stan.

Oh, and I know despite the Odd Future thread, I think people should sample their new album but I've received positive comments from people I know that hate OF after hearing some of this. OF Stan too

Did you get Blackstar - Blackstar? That's Mos Def and Talib Kweli and a crazy good album.

I'd say:
Madvillain (i.e. MF Doom) - Madvillainy
A Tribe Called Quest - Low End Theory (you probably missed this one because it needed no discussion in this thread)
Nas- Illmatic
Lil Wayne - The Carter (the first Carter)

whoops that's my five. All these albums I could listen to day in and day out.

Spaceghostpurrrp, Lil Ugly Mane, and whoever produces for G-Mane are the closest I've found to that old 3 6 feeling. Spaceghostpurrrp is really lo fi and sounds like it was made with a computer mic, so I recommend Lil Ugly Mane's "Mista Thug Isolation" (especially the song I'm Lugubrious)

Listened to some of the songs and the beats are great, but couldn't get into the raps. It's too bad that apparently his producer (Shawn Kemp?) hasn't produced anything else ever. Sounds like a more jazzy early hypnotize minds

Please don't do this. It's cool to talk about favorite or essential albums but just a bunch of 5 album lists is dumb

edit: that is to say, just a list of artist - album and nothing else

Some others:
Key Nyata - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6CjZ7Yqs4lI, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hHxZ_LAF5ho
straight up steals a Gangsta Pat beat for a remix of "I Wanna Smoke" but he does it well. Looking forward to his tape dropping this summer. He has one out already floating around but it's a little disjointed

Denzel Curry - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I0-ymegLV6c, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xariZdq-xX0 basically Spaceghostpurrp-lite, but he has some good tracks. And sometime just raps over DJ Paul beats (ex: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vWSTIbxZxK4). He has a couple tapes up on datpiff.

http://www.datpiff.com/Denzel-AquariusKilla-CuRRy-King-Of-The-Mischievous-South-Vol-1-Underground-Ta-mixtape.304010.html

https://www.datpiff.com/Denzel-AquariusKilla-CuRRy-King-Remembered-Underground-Tape-1991-1995-RVID-mixtape.231060.html

And then there's Metro Zu/Ruben Slikk... Mink Rug is their best track. They have tons of tapes out, but it's kind of all over the place in terms of quality.

Edit: The clean version isn't bad either (let it run on and it plays automatically)
