Can't believe I missed it...I could have sworn I marked it on Rainlendar. I managed to apply for the ATF job, but as slim as my chances are, I would have done better with two slim chances instead of one. Is there any approach I can take to getting hired locally, perhaps in a police department? About the only non-policeman job I've been able to find is Asset Protection with retail stores. I've applied to a good deal of those, but there has to be something else I can try applying for with a CJ degree.

I'm currently a contractor, and my boss is pushing me to either get this job or become a PSC in case our contracting company doesn't get the rebid...same duties, same office, same drat desk and fellow contractor I share a room with, just $10,000 more a year and a whole lot of job security...

I've noticed that several listings on USAJobs have specified that a college graduate can be considered for GS-07 if they met one of the following conditions: 1. They attended at least 1 year of graduate school 2. They belonged to an honors society or were otherwise recognized for exemplary academic performance (i.e. graduating with honors) 3. They graduated with a GPA between 3.0 - 4.0 / were in the upper 33% of their class. Is that really all it takes to be considered for GS-07 over GS-05 listings? Having a good GPA? I can't find very many GS-05 listings beyond "gardener" or "professional copy machine maintenance"; the selection increases greatly when you start searching for GS-07 jobs. And yet GS-05 seems to be the grade for entry level college graduates.

A friend of my father informed me about a recent posting for Border Patrol/Customs at USA Jobs. I applied for the position and completed the mandatory online test, and had then scheduled to take the written test in Orlando, FL on April 3rd. Was I elligible for the written test because I scored well enough on the online test, or do they offer this oppurtunity for anyone who fills out the application? What does the written test entail, what score is usually required, and how long do they take to contact you if you're elligible for the next step (the physical training in GA)? More importantly, what are the pros/cons of Border Patrol? Since obtaining my CJ degree, this has been the biggest (and so far only) oppurtunity I've been given so far. I'm filled with questions and doubts, and I'm hoping some opinions here can help alleviate either/or.

CBP. Wasn't sure of the difference, but according a Googled forum, CBP makes double overtime. Not sure of any other major advantages/disadvantages between the two. And according to my dad's sources, scoring a 90% or higher on the test guarantees a callback for the 3 month training phase. Wondering if that's true.

Pembroke Pines (South FL) and Canadian Border positions are sought after spots for Border Patrol as you are not sitting in the desert all night and having your family living in a shithole town. I can assure you that your chances as a new hire are quite high that, if you pass everything, you will be offered the SW Border. Make sure your "dad's friends" aren't thinking of the airport CBP inspectors which are a different animal than BPA. Edit: Grammar. Has anyone ever applied for a roster position before? Recently I applied for a position which was a 6 month roster and I'm not quite sure how these work. The wording makes it seem like the the best qualified candidates go on a list and when a position is posted they will only interview people selected from the roster. I'm wondering if the 6 month roster means they plan on hiring for that position within the next 6 months or is it likely the 6 months will go by with no hiring?

There are certainly some people there that know their stuff and are invested in trying to convey that knowledge to the students? But for the most part, it just seems like one of the many organizations trying to position themselves to receive some of that sweet, sweet training budget spending from the federal gov't and contractors. They do have partnerships with two local community colleges (Sinclair and Clark State) that seem to be working well as a pipeline for retraining people, and funneling into lower level contractor jobs around WPAFB. Would a masters degree be far more beneficial to being selected for a job than a second bachelors in the same general field? In my case I'll have a BS in meteorology and I'm considering a BS in environmental chemistry. I mostly just want to coast for a couple of years using my GI bill and I'm not particularly interested in research, but if it's a big factor in federal jobs I might just suck it up and not be lazy.

"Environmental chemistry" sounds awfully nichey. Search usajobs for jobs you're interested in and what degrees they require for those positions- you're probably going to be better off with a straight "chemistry" MS even if your electives tend toward the environmental side. That will place you in consideration for far more positions.

I am a senior intending to graduate around mid-June (missing a requisite PE class) with a BS in Biomedical Engineering. Like a lot of kids my age, I'm totally clueless as to what I'm going to do after graduation. I'm wondering if this would be a good path to go down? I have a few questions as a result. Are federal jobs subject to discrimination over LGBT status? I'm transgendered, and I worry that I may be turned down if I am required to disclose my trans status. Is this a major problem, or what is the track record the government has for that sort of thing? Is this a good place to start if I'm not-quite-just beginning my work experience? I am 21 years old and literally about to graduate with my BS, so I'm not exactly someone with five years in IT or something like that. I have some experience under my belt in research and being a lab assistant, but I'm worried that that wouldn't qualify me for anything. Does this mean that I should look elsewhere for employment? Is this a good place to start? If not, where? Thank you for your time.

The ATF exam seems to have been exclusively offered to veterans after the last announcement. Even some non-vet laterals didn't get passed through from what I've heard.

That's correct, it only has to show on your DD-214. You'll be VRA and VEOA eligible for life. (In my case, I deployed to Bosnia supporting NATO in Operation Joint Forge and got the Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal.) The cool thing about VRA is that you can be selected for positions non-competitively. It isn't a very common thing for people to perform outright VRA hires without knowing the person, though, but if you make a reputation for yourself you can go all the way up to GS-11 and completely bypass all the hiring bullshit. Again, in my circumstances, I took a job with the Army as a GWOT term and got my permanent status via VRA 2 years in. It's been my experience that hiring managers simply don't realize they can do this so I started adding it to my resume in my military experience. Just something simple like "Honorably discharged at rank of SSGT; eligible for noncompetitive VRA Appointment."

Hey everyone! So I was wondering if I could come here for some advice about a job I've applied for through USAJOBS. After finishing up with grad school in Engineering, I seriously considered going to law school for patent law. However, in the end, thanks in part to the law school thread, I decided to apply to be a Patent Examiner for the USPTO, which would have me working in the DC area. I completed my application for the GS-7/GS-9 Patent Examiner position in mid-February and never really thought of it much outside of being a pipe dream. However, as the process continued, I noticed my application status become more...interesting. I received notice that I was eligible and that my application was headed to a selecting official. Later, I received an invitation for a phone interview, which I also accepted. I had my phone interview last week and haven't really heard back since. I originally dismissed this job opportunity as no shot in hell, but that there was no harm in trying. Now, especially after being selected for an interview, I feel I may have a shot at this. I have not heard any bad news or good news, the only thing since my interview is I still get e-mail notifications saying my application has been updated, even though nothing has changed that I am aware of (which may or may not mean something in itself). I'm not a patient person, so this wait is unnerving to me; and it would be nice to have some answers to a few questions if there are any available: 1. Is it meaningful to have been given a phone interview? Or is the hiring process at this point not very competitive and they are basically giving everyone a shot? 2. How long is the wait usually for government jobs such as this? I know that I've heard the generalization that the government takes forever to do something, but I'm sort of at a critical point in my life in terms of what I want to do with my career and personal life, so I want to make sure I'm giving this opportunity enough time to process. 3. Do USAJobs applications typically give out notifications if you do not receive a job or consideration for it? I am well aware of the idea of companies/employers not interested in you never contacting you; but I honestly have had very few interviews, and zero interviews that did not turn into jobs in my young career. I don't know anything about the process that USAJobs works through. 4. A lesser important question, but does anyone know how many more steps in the hiring process there are past phone interviews, in general? I'm sure there would be a second, more personal interview later on. Thanks for considering and possibly replying to my issue. I don't really want to hear anything about how lovely the job is in itself. I have done a good bit of research into the position and feel very comfortable that this is the right kind of job for me, should I land it. I know it's very dull, but I'm ok with that. It's a huge deal for me because this could be a position that could very well become my career and be the catalyst to finally getting engaged to my longtime girlfriend and settling down. E: Oh and just a minor detail, but I felt very good about my interview, with no real blunders happening. Of course, that's all subjective, though.

If you get a phone interview then you've made it to the closest point before getting the job. The wait time varies, usually at the very least a month. I would call/email whoever you interviewed with and just see whats up.

Sure it would activate my clearance but I'm having doubts that even with that and the language study would be better than attending the grad school I got accepted to. Any one have a differing opinion? Otherwise I'm willing to tell them too little too late. Plus kinda banking on round 2 of the DS exam. Plus I just had to buy a new car after an oak tree crushed my old a couple of weeks ago, so if I left then that would've kinda been a waste.
