I'm sold, I'd buy this tomorrow, except who am I kidding... most of these neato Jeep concepts never make it to production. The portal axle kit is neat, you won't have guys running around trying to retrofit HMMWV or Volvo portals to jeeps now... :v:

Then again I picked up 4 H1 portals for $50 bucks each a few weeks back so with fabrication that's miles ahead of the $23,000 or so for the official kit.

There also those of us who know our limits. I was all for changing my back bumper myself until I saw I would have to drop the gas tank to do it. Could I have done it, probably. Would it have taken 3 times as long to do it, probably. So a shop that has a much larger auto tool box than me can do it in 2 hours for a bit of cash, ok.

The only other thing I really plan a to have a shop do is the lift. I don't have the tools(95% of my tools are woodworking) nor the space to do it.

Yeah I can understand that. I had a shop do the swap on my intake header when I realized I had an exhaust leak. I could have done it myself but didn't want to risk making an expensive OOPS. There's a little less pressure with nickel and dime parts.

That seems to have worked! No problems at all. I drove 450 miles, including a trip up into the mountains toward the end of the day, and I averaged just shy of 17 MPG pulling close to 3000 pounds. I hit the "tow/haul" button for the whole trip, too, so I was working without overdrive. I barely even knew the trailer was back there. It was very smooth.

I just towed about 4000lb from Vancouver to Grande Prairie Alberta. Total vehicle weight with trailer 9100lbs. The hills on the coquihalla I did about 35mph. Cruising speed was 55mph. Averaged 16.1L per 100km. Not sure what that is in MPG.

The trailer was a 6x12 enclosed U-Haul tandem axle with that hitch brake thing. Braking was fine. It got active and got the tail waging the dog around 65mph. So I stayed at 55.

I have an extra b&m tranny cooler plus the tow package so 2 coolers total. The transmission didn't get hot but I will be taking it to the dealership for a trans filter and fluid flush soon.

I've decided to keep the jk and not get a raptor. I can't justify a 45,000 purchase just for the ability to drive fast on dirt road.

Instead I'm going for the teraflex pre runner suspension setup and either a supercharger or a hemi swap depending on the weight. The jk u is really balanced, a hemi might throw that off some. I figure all in all it will give me just as much joy as a raptor without having to get rid of my beloved Rubicon.

I'm going to be towing about 1,500 lbs with my '01 XJ from Seattle to Phoenix this summer. Is a tranny cooler necessary? I'm not worried about replacing the tranny within the next year, but wouldn't want it to fail on me during the trip. Then again it doesn't look too difficult to do.

Should be fine unless you have symptoms of trans problems starting already. Go easy on it (55-65, keep it in 3rd not OD especially when climbing hills) and you will be fine. A trans cooler is very very simple to install though if you decide to.

Hatters gonna hat.
I used my '98 XJ to pull my boat (between 1,500 and 2,000 lbs with the trailer) from Detroit to Atlanta a while back and the trans temp gauge was off-scale low the whole time I was on the freeway because the torque converter locks once you get up to speed. I only turned off the overdrive and put it in third if it would downshift and/or unlock while going up a hill in the Smokies. The trans fluid only really heats up in stop and go traffic of if you have to sit around idling for some reason, like people in front of you not knowing how to launch a boat:argh:.

edit: No cooler except whatever the factory put on (I think I have the one that just goes through the radiator).

Would that be: "Back down the ramp till your feet are wet and there's crumbs floating, then let it float off the trailer on it's own before going up the ramp and parking?"

I think you mean people who didn't pick the right vehicle for boat launching. :3:

I didn't get the best deal, but I got what I wanted at close to the price I wanted, and with a better interest rate than I expected. So...ok.

I basically got this one (AC, hardtop, auto) for the price of the barebones models they had. This thing is night and day compared to my old YJ. When I sold that one, I knew I'd get another, but I figured I'd make it more than 2 years first.

I went on my first organized trail run this weekend and broke in my jk unlimited pretty good. I had to be winched out three times, and pushed once. Got some fresh pin striping, and mud in places I didn't know existed.

I think I'm definitely going to need a small lift, and something more aggressive than the stock mud and snow tires before I go on something like this again. I did win a hilift extreme 4x4 jack at the raffle which was pretty cool.

The green machine successfully completed the nearly 1400-mile journey, towing what was probably almost 4000 pounds of gross trailer weight. It never complained, and averaged 16MPG over the whole trip.

Just swapped the injectors on my '92 4.0L. Let it run for about 10 minutes, but it's still rough. I've never heard what an engine sounds like when it misses so I'm not sure if mine is doing that. Any way to check if one of the cylinders isn't firing? OBD-I, by the way. Maybe I just need to take it out and drive it for a bit to get things to settle in? (which will have to wait a few days, I am in the middle of changing out the diff fluids)

Two easy ways... one is a little more exciting than the other, and risks ignition coil damage more than the other.

1. yank one spark plug wire at a time while it's running. Hope you don't have a pacemaker or a marginal ignition coil.
2. disconnect one injector cable at a time while it's running.

In either case, the one that doesn't change how the engine runs at all (or changes it less than the others) is the one that isn't firing properly. The ones that make it bog and stumble horribly are the ones that are working.

You may get a check engine light with the second method but it should go away after a few ignition switch cycles / short trips. Have you replaced the plugs, wires, cap, and rotor yet?

I didn't mean it to sound like an ultimatum...it may still be possible to pick up a good one. But several forums I frequent have reported problems with them dying too early and not charging back up very well.

Whatever you pick, a Group 34 should fit just fine. I had a 34/78 yellow top in my YJ (/78 is just the near-useless front terminals) and have a 34 DieHard Platinum in my XJ now. Bought it used from a buddy and it's going on 5+ years strong now, even handling some winch duty. It out-specs the yellow in every category.

Plugs, yes. Wires/cap/rotor appear to have been done by the PO. Jeep was running fine before I did the injectors. I've put ~3000mi on it since purchase. Which risks damage?

the plugs. Every time it tries to fire the disconnected plug it'll stress the coil out instead. I use the injector method every time because it risks nothing except a CEL and doesn't shock the everloving poo poo out of me.

OK so this teraflex pre runner lift comes with 3" lift, spring retainers, track bars, those special pre runner bump stops, and a long arm kit. It costs $4000 and the fox custom valved shocks are another $800. That is an expensive kit.

Neat things are it stays low but offers 8" of up travel.

I'm wondering if the long arms are really needed. I don't want to cut brackets off the frame, and with sway bar electronic disconnect and licked diffs, suspension flex isn't really a top concern.

What do you guys think of that kit but retain the factory control arms ? I've had a 3.5" lift in it with factory arms and the angles are not bad. They're less that a 2" lift on a tj.

You get 4 annoying chimes when you start the vehicle and a little yellow flat tire symbol on the dash. Also I think it can be disabled with an sct tuner.
