I've only had 2 (17.5% abv) and 3 (15.5% abv) and as far as I know they are totally different recipes and beers although there is a common idea between them. Very strong old ale / imperial stout like beers with a little smoke.

1994 Sam Adams Triple Bock was finally drinking like a good beer

I seriously remember drinking this beer, but based on Wikipedia it was last brewed in 1997 and we definitely just bought whatever I'm thinking of off the shelf at no great expense as college kids in Boston around 2004.

Was it so widely available (and bad) that it sat on the shelf for 7 years? I was not much into craft beer at the time and I remember it being super high ABV, sweet and barely carbonated. FWIW, it definitely was not Utopias. Triple Bock sticks in my mind as the right name... it was so mindblowingly weird that this was supposed to be "beer" that it made quite an impression.

So a local store got in some bottles of Lost Abbey Red Poppy. This would be a big deal as it's one of the few beers my wife will drink, but it's seventeen dollars for a 12 ounce bottle. I had it on tap early last year, and it was good, but not $17/12oz good. Are they gouging or is that what the drat thing actually costs?

Sadly that's around the price you're going to end up paying for it. I recall I paid $15 for the bottle at the brewery during the release. It's Lost Abbey, they sure as hell like 12oz bottles to range at that price point.

One of my local growler stations just put Founder's Breakfast Stout on tap. I'm debating to get a fill of it, or not. It's my favorite stout, and it's not being sold anywhere around here until next FBS season, so this is my last chance to get some.

I kind of regret buying Hoptimum + Maharaja now after trying both of them. One is too hoppy for me, and the other is too sweet. I guess it was still cool to try some new beers!

what is your go to, then?

i like maharaja, but it's a few levels below hopslam and double crooked tree. as far as other IIPAs, i think southern tier's 2XIPA is really smooth and two brother's hop juice is good.

My favorite IIPA I can get locally (although only once every 2-3 months) is Dreadnaught. My favorite IIPA I can consistently get is Old 21 by The Brew Kettle. I also enjoy Hopslam more than Hoptimum/Maharaja.

I would put Double Trouble in the same category as Hoptimum, and Maharaja, in that I'm glad to have tried them, but I don't think I'll be purchasing them again. I still haven't tried anything from Three Brothers. There's a beer store an hour away from me that gets them in, but I haven't bought any when I've went up there, because they have such an overwhelming amount of beers I never know what to buy.

Oh man, someone just stopped into my office to give me a copy of this Michael Jackson book: http://www.amazon.com/Ultimate-Beer-Michael-Jackson/dp/0789435276 It's from 1998 so its fascinating to see how 90% of the featured beers are European, and it describes Sierra Nevada as "perhaps the most famous new-generation brewery in the US". The photos are pretty fabulous too.

Good to know about the Great Divide, thanks for doing the research for all of us!

If anyone hasn't seen Beer Hunter, I think all of the episodes are on youtube. The quality might not be HD, but the content within definitely is. It's such a great series, and it's totally worth watching.

I want there to be another beer series on TV where someone goes around and visits a ton of breweries, or something, that would be awesome. I think Sam Calagione would be the perfect man for the job, but since he's the face of DFH, and a very busy guy, I don't think it would ever happen. I really wish Brew Masters wasn't canceled, that was a great show, too.

I was thinking about that last night while watching the episode of Brew Masters where they dump $500k worth of ruined 120 minute IPA. I think that they should have a rotating host, though. Have Sam do an episode where he visits Southern Tier or something. Then have Steve and Greg at Stone go do a thing at some place like The Alchemist. And have Chris Lively from Ebenezer's Pub do one at some point - that guy is absolutely hilarious and a blast when hosting a tasting. Basically, pull the guys off their home turf and just let the episodes develop organically.

edit: By the way, if you're ever out near Lovell, ME, you need to visit Ebenezer's. Words and photos don't do it justice. I think it is easily better than Monk's in Philly.

I completely agree with rage-saq. Maharaja has this cough syrupy profile to it that to me has no place in an IPA. Hair of the Dog's beers all have that similar 'note' to them too, despite covering plenty of different styles. I can't explain it much more than that, I guess it's my 'hop X tastes like [weird flavor]'.

I had a Deviant Dale's and I thought it sucked. The beer had a metallic, medicinal, sort of chalky taste like I was sucking on aspirin tablets, is that due to certain hops in the beer? And I've seen "resin" used for describing this beer, but I was under the impression that descriptor means the beer coats the mouth in a syrupy, floral sort of way, not artificial/metallic.

Yeah I didn't get that at all. Maybe it's just one of those things where people are super sensitive to a hop flavor like the infamous Simcoe cat pee or Summit onion/garlic :iiam: When I describe a beer as resiny, I'm thinking pine pitch which I definitely get from some IPA's like Union Jack.

I also think of "resiny" as sticky/oily hops. Torpedo is resiny, while something like Stone IPA is more dry/citrusy.

I did get a strong onion presence when I had Gubna for the first time, but then I had it on draft and it had a more appealing grapefruit citrus flavor, while the "onion" was a lot subtler. I really don't know how it was a big variance.

Thanks for the West/St Bernardus info rage-saq. As for Maharaja I've only had the 2012 version but it had a nice balance of sweetness with a slight spice I notice as it warmed up reminding me of cinnamon. I found it interesting and a nice change from the hop-bombs I've been drinking.

On the topic of Sam Adams and their beers, I have a 2012 Imperial Stout and after having their 2010 or 2011 (I can't remember which) and drain pouring it after two sips I'm thinking maybe I'll hold onto the 2012 for 10 years, maybe it'll be drinkable then. Seriously their Imperial Stout is loving gross, too much raisin or fig flavor.

Yeah, last night I had a first drain pour in as far as I can remember and it was a 2011 Stone Old Guardian.

Not that it was bad or anything, but I had a good half of the bomber over the course of an hour or two and I literally could not drink anymore of it and it was already pretty late. I should have invested in some wine stoppers or something cause I felt really bad just letting half a bomber go to waste like that.

I don't get how it's easy for folks to drain pour stuff.

These won't work, as pulling a slight vacuum on something that's carbonated won't exactly work.

You need something like this:

I have stoppers like this and they keep beer perfectly when the bomber's about half full for about two nights, or for one night if it's 1/3rd full. A bit past that, there'll be an effect on carbonation, but it won't be undrinkable or anything.

I almost bought a second Duvel set for the glass alone, I'll just wait until next year though. I must say though it's the glass that gets the most use of all of mine a close second being my snifter.

Edit: I clean mine with it's own sponge using Dawn no-scent mild dish soap, the non-concentrated version. Glasses come out smell, spot, and dirt free with no effect on the beer as long as you know how to rinse a glass.
