Good call on that Shroomtard. I'm really feeling Proper Pimp and Ima Shroom. Obvious is good too.

Metro Zu, SGP, Lil' B and OF have ruled my ears over the last year. Metro Zu not as much due to only getting into them around the Mink Rug release BUT I can see me listening to them this year.

Very true, but if you're not a big fan of the Hilltop Hoods, Phrase or Drapht you can struggle. Oz misses someone like Westwood (I'm going to probably regret mentioning him) who does actually cover the US scene. Hell even Zane Lowe picks up more stuff than most over here. But yeah, weak excuses.

I miss the UK and more specifically radio 1 late nights for picking up new music from outside the country.

I'm from Australia too and most of the people I know here into rap only like Aussie rap and Tupac and Biggie and little else.

I can't get into Australian rap at all, while most of the big acts here are decent lyricists I'm just not feeling it as a whole. Aussie rap songs are about drinking with your mates or inspirational songs about struggling against the odds and that's about it.

For a country built by criminals, there is very little in the way of gansta rap here.

This is generalizing, but I think a big problem amongst local artists (apart from being painfully homogeneous) is that there's an over-emphasis on being "authentic" and "TRUE HIP HOP" rather than being fun or innovative. If you look in the libraries of Aussie Hip-Hop folks all the non-Australian rap they listen to made after 1995 is Army of the Pharaohs/Immortal Technique style backpacker tunes. Its like a KRS-One cargo cult here. I'd SUPPORT THE LOCAL SCENE if they had something interesting to say or had a style that wasn't poorly trying to copy late 80's New York.

Ehh, I'm not sure if I'd agree with that. I mean the whole late 90's/00's underground scene had a lot of white dudes who were definitely doing their own thing. I'd say that's a much more recent phenomenon, with the big backlash against "backpacker" poo poo.

Also 99.5% of foreign rap sucks and sounds like whatever was popular in the US 15 years ago. We went over this before, if it's not from the US/Canada it's extremely likely to be raw garbage. I'm already looking forward to a bunch of Lex Luger ripoff drums coming from Europe in 10 years.

Definitely wasn't meant as an insult, just that the stuff you've expressed interest in is fairly general and a lot of it is 'fringe' hip-hop that a lot of people will respond dismissively to (with the exception of your recent discoveries of stuff like Killer Mike and A$AP Rocky, which is popular). Das Racist, Aesop Rock, Astronautalis and Scroobius Pip will get you the broom Apollo style

For me at least, I think it's a combination of that and of phases you go through. From like 15-18 I listened to what I thought was "intelligent"(see: lovely) rap and after a while you realize it's either really bland and holds no substance or it's too preachy. I still like rappers who put emotion into tracks and their personalities shine through and less of rappers who are saying something with "meaning" just for the sake of it.

when rock and roll kids get into hip hop the initial period of fandom comprises a desperate scramble to collect acts that will legitamize their newfound love of rap to their rock and roll friends. this usially manifests as a very large premium being placed on big words and "positive messages" and generally anything that can counter the general outsiders perception of rap as "dumb crime music"

thats not a pure way to appreciate music; its a defensive reaction, and as "converts" get more and more comfortable with the fact that they are rap fans, they free themselves from the burden of being a self-styled "rap ambassador" to people who couldnt care less, because they grow to recognize that hip hop can be dope even when its not the kind that causes white guys with beards to nod their heads knowingly

the problem is that when you see this dynamic over and over agan, its real easy to get dismissive about it, because it generally it points to a lack of knowledge accompanied by that sophomoric "lemme tell you whats what" tone that probably comes from knowing more about rap music than your friends that dont listen to it at all

lot of words but i think its accurate

Bounce is pretty much for NOLA like Go-go is for the DC area, meaning that it is party music, so most songs have the same basic tempo or beat and rely on callouts and then they vary little from there. Ricky B is early bounce, but here's some other very similar stuff:
A lot of people (and wikipedia lol) say that MC T.T. Tucker & DJ Irv's "Where Dey At" is the first bounce record http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E8w641Hwk7s
Ricky B - Shake it Fo Ya Hood http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GcFy_nF5qrg (FUCKIN RIGHT ITS ALRIGHT)
Magnolia Shorty - Monkey on Tha Dick http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YR7VbTbeIzI
Gregory D & DJ Mannie Fresh "Buck Jump Time" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jM8T8RK3hqU
The Show Boys - Drag Rap (Triggaman) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oJyo1fjtNw4 (This beat is the basis for most bounce songs)
Lil Elt - Get Da Gat http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VCHxpCwenmo (Jay Electronica references this song on Exhibit A "get the gat get the gat was a popular phrase")
Tim Smooth - I Gotsa Have It http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0CzYHTRPJ8I

Partners-N-C or PNC are one of my favorite bounce groups, but they cross over a lot more than other artists just because they vary the production from the usual bounce stuff. Compare PNC - Give Me Some (Heroin) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lhKVRlm83pU to Pump tha Party http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d6RWF5Bc7_Y&feature=related and Let the Good Times Roll (which features a great sample) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B_xOLigAseY&feature=relmfu All that PNC stuff is from the same album, which is PNC3. PNC would also like to remind you how often they hate UNLV, but I will recommend you try out UNLV, here is "6th & Baronne" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uH37HbxYA9w

I know less about modern bounce artists, but Big Freedia is pretty popular (and I recommend him/her). Big Freedia is sissy bounce which is an even weirder sub-genre http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eau1qHxI-8w
Here's a bounce remix of Adele's "Rolling in the Deep" that was gaining some steam regionally: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t0F80Dhd0aY&feature=related

I think that's about all I know about bounce but mostly thats just my youtube favorites and some albums I like. There's a ton ton ton ton ton of bounce out there. Here's some good sites to find out more about Bounce, but please consult your local librarian as well
http://nolabounce.com/
http://twankleandglisten.blogspot.com/ (most of the links are expired but they posted good poo poo)
http://wheretheyatnola.com/ (biographies/retrospective on bounce artists)
I can't find the link anymore or it might not exist, but there's an excellent blog on NOLA music called the boot state or something similar to that. I'll keep looking but its the most comprehensive I've found

dethkon, I sort of agree with you. Gunplay and Flocka just feel very real in their ignorance and there is something sort of refreshing about how they revel in it. I don't need messages or content, I just want something I can bump while I smoke weed

Generally port cities like NOLA, Jacksonville, Newark, Houston, etc tend to have bigger heroin problems than other ports of entry, but I don't know if this is really all that true anymore with the drastic rise in the amount of synthetic opiates out there. If you look back until fairly recently, there were cities that were cocaine/crack cities and heroin cities and it was easy to tell which was which because 'traditional' heroin cities didn't have nearly as bad of crack problems in the 1980s. I don't know if this is still entirely accurate, but what I'm speculating is that niche heroin and ecstasy rappers might be explained by geography. I'm probably not articulating my point very well right now, but I think you guys get the idea.

As to rappers admitting to heroin use: is Schoolboy Q's 'Oxy Music' continuing the great trend of non-drank based opiate rapps pioneered by early 90s NOLA and refined by Lil Wyte?

Interesting point. My old city Miami has a problem with boy, in the black communities specifically, that goes back to like the 1930s and won't go away. But Miami is more known as coke central of course, so I can't comment on that part. Interesting to think about.

This seems like a good excuse for me to stop sleeping on Q.

Other thoughts: It is sad that the drug game and rap game are connected like they are. Who will be the courageous first artist to rap about huffing paint??? The krylon scourge.
