Zorro KingOfEngland posted:While I agree this change sucks, your car insurance probably costs a bit more than $11 a month. Oh for sure it does but if my car was totaled I'd still only be looking at paying about $4,000 during the course of a four year note (counting the $500 deductible) for a $28,000 car that's about 1/7th (14%) the initial value of the car versus paying 84% of the value of a $550 phone over two years. So I still think most people would be better off passing on this insurance particularly since the cost of the deductible alone would be enough to get a decent used replacement (maybe not the same phone but probably something you can get by with until you're eligible for an upgrade). tomguycot fucked around with this message at 21:24 on Apr 20, 2012 |

You could theoretically claim your phone under your homeowners policy, but most of the time the deductible for renters/homeowners is around $500 so you aren't really coming out ahead (plus then you have a claim against your insurance which could affect your rates.)

nate fisher posted:That said has anyone added their phone to their main (home or car) insurance policy? nate fisher posted:Can you get a policy just for the phone? The real issue is that, in the end, phones just aren't that expensive. With the new rates, a $200 deductible and $11/mo x 24 months comes to $464 total, which easily covers the used cost of most not-completely-brand-new phones. Unless you're filing claims on every phone you own, that money is probably best placed in a savings account. This is unlike homeowners, renters, vehicular, health, etc., insurance, where the potential cost of disaster scenarios far exceeds what one can reasonably stow away in savings, and so risk shedding is far more important. Also, I suspect that due to the above, many folks enrolled in TEP actually make use of it. Which is fine, except that will inevitably drive costs up. If anything, I take the TEP increases as a sign that small-electronics insurance isn't a particularly profitable industry, as opposed to a money grab opportunity.

This is the way I look at accidental equipment protection on phones. I've had a cell phone for 11 years and never once carried insurance. That savings allow me to buy like 2 or 3 phones outright now. So, unless I start breaking them every 9 months from now on, I'm going to remain ahead of the game by not having insurance.

Keep in mind that when someone comes into a store with a non-working phone and we order a replacement, the costs on Sprint's end is about $110 (refurb phone + shipping + commission to rep). So when you have Evos, Shifts and Epics acting up and we have to keep exchanging them, that does turn into a lot of money. Of course releasing phones that DON'T BREAK would be great, and honestly that's why I believe Dan Hesse when he states that the iPhone can have a cost savings over Android. TEP isn't bad (although really not something goons need) for normal customers at $8 a month and a $100 deductible. I have it for my fiance currently. TEP at $11 a month and a $200 deductible is pretty loving insane. Obviously I would be way more hesitant to recommend it.

Just activated 4 Nexuses. Nexi? Goodbye and good riddance, Samsung Moment. Anyway, they are running 4.0.4 if anyone was curious. Duckman, do you know that the grandfathering of TEP at $8 is a sure thing? Is the deductible grandfathered also?

I am replacing my Samsung Moment (holy gently caress I hate you so much) with a Galaxy Nexus. For some reason "Hands Free" activation didn't work and when I tried to activate online:quote:We' re sorry, but your new phone requires a plan change, and we need to assist you. Please click the chat link, or call us at 888-211-4727. Which I can't call using the phone that I want to deactivate. Which is my only phone. And now I am trying to go through the chat and the expected wait time is forty-five minutes. What the gently caress?

Real answer: you just wanted to use Ferg's awesome/Awful forums app. Did I read somewhere that Sprint LTE was going to utilize the 850 MHz spectrum? Does that apply to the Galaxy Nexus and other upcoming LTE phones as well, or is it still going to be some time before we get to actually use that delicious building penetrating spectrum?

Source I live in Chicago so the first wave of LTE won't get here until the end of phase one (next year, optimistically). If I get the EVO LTE in August; it will still be about 2 years before Sprint rolls out 800MHz LTE here.

If you don't have insurance they have the right to charge you $36 to do the repair, although a lot of mic issues usually can be fixed by just opening the phone and cleaning the mic (not all but most, so it's a pretty easy repair). The worst case is a repair doesn't fix it, I'm which case they would order a replacement phone, which would almost certainly be $36 (of course you would at most only pay this fee once, not once to repair one to swap). So just take it by, see what they can do.

Welp, just blew my upgrade on a phone made by Samsung. Hopefully the fact that it is a Nexus phone will save it, but fingers are extra crossed. Haven't used an upgrade since I bought my Mogul when I signed up for SERO. Touch Pro 2, I'm counting the minutes until I can retire you for good.

Has anyone else had trouble upgrading to the Galaxy Nexus? It just failed to activate hands free so I'm trying to go through the website. I'm on SERO and I realize that it will have to go up to SERO Premium. However the site doesn't list that as an option, its trying to make me upgrade to Everything Plans, it doesn't list anything else. Any clues on how to upgrade this without an Everything plan? VV Completely missed that in the OP. Calling now. Thanks. Quid fucked around with this message at 20:05 on Apr 22, 2012 |

Just bought a GNex after using a Palm Centro for the past 5 or so years. I am really, really, excited to finally have a smart phone. I hope it gets here soon, ordered it online and cost me $200 with my $150 upgrade. I was going to get an iPhone merely based on the fact that I dont have an AUX input in my car and I'm using an FM transmitter with an iPod hookup to play music. But it looks like I'll have to buy a different adapter or keep using my iPod for music D:

I'm sort of in the game boat here. I am planning on switching to Sprint in August, and Wimax coverage here in the Chicago area is pretty drat good. Speeds aren't great (seem to be 3-4mbps), but coming from 3g that's still pretty drat good. If Sprints LTE network isn't running in Chicago by then, I'll probably grab a used Evo or something to hold me over (or go with a Tmo $30/mo 4g plan and phone). brc64 posted:The screen is large enough that she doesn't mind the soft keyboard, particularly in landscape. I gotta agree with brc64 on this, I rarely turn on 4G on my EVO because it will suck my battery in 30min or less and majority of the time it's shittier signal than 3G anyways. Does anyone know if LTE radios are any more forgiving on the battery compared ot Wimax? Supposedly my town, Austin, is gonna be one of the first to deploy LTE (I think I read Junish somewhere) so I don't mind getting the Nexus now and waiting a couple months for the speeds. Yeah I want the phone for LTE, but the AMOLED 720p screen and ICS are also big considerations. Also, when I got my EVO, I got one of the EPRP plans from the blog link in the OP. My current bill looks like this: code:
