Gojira has a pre-order page set up for a new DVD they're putting out in June. It looks like a bonanza of cool Gojira poo poo, half live stuff and half documentary.

My suggestion's not quite the same kind of stuff, but it is a band that mixes post-rock/atmospheric black metal flawlessly, probably better than any I've ever heard. New band from France - The Great Old Ones.

edit: vvv good call on Mar de Grises, can't believe I forgot about them.

edit2: If you're not aware of them already, you might want to check out Deafheaven.

You've probably seen me mention Mar due Grises several times but their album Streams Inwards is incredible. I can't recommend it enough.

More like Alcest though, An Autumn for Crippled Children might work for you. That's about all I got.

Les Discrets? I saw them open for Alcest and they sounded pretty similar. Wasn't wild about their 2012 release but apparently the one prior to that was better.

Seriously though the album is out in some countries now and it's loving amazing. I'm not a huge fan of Death/Black etc metal but these guys nail it. If you like Opeth and similar bands then give them a listen. They pull off the Heavy to clean switch like no others.

The other song they released a while ago from this album is here:

But I'd suggest getting the whole 'Portal of I' album.

It's a great album and the fact it came from Australia makes it all the more impressive!!

I went to the Chicago Opeth/Mastadon/Ghost show. Ghost loving killed it and Mastadon was incredible. I don't care for Opeth but there was no way I was missing the other two. The thing that sucked was that Behemoth, et. al (minus Watain) were playing in Chicago the same night. I went for Ghost since they seem kind of "fly by night" to me and I wanted to make sure I saw them before they inevitably go back to whatever real bands they are in...

I had to miss their leg of that tour near me because of work, Pretty loving pissed. Did you notice if Opeth's set was pretty heavy or did you even stay for them? I saw them with Katatonia a while back on their Heratage tour and as much as I love the band, it was kind of a drag to hear them only play their newer, softer stuff.

I stayed for them, since Mastodon played last (I think I read somewhere that they are switching off headlining). I'm not super familiar with their catalog, but most of what they played sounded like prog rock. They played a couple heavier tracks toward the end that were OK, but most of the set was pretty meandering and kind of boring imo.

Yeah that's kind of what I had expected; they kind of seem like they're in the grey between prog-metal and a kind of ambient (Lately, a la Heritage, at least). Akerfeldt's side project with Steven Wilson really worked well for me though, in that "grey" genre.

I know it's Opeth's choice as artists, but I do hope they bring some death metal back in. The perfect fusion of prog/death metal is why I loved them in the first place. There is nothing "wrong" with Heritage, but it is nowhere near as special as the rest of their catalogue. I think they did the softer stuff a lot better on Damnation anyway, man, I love that album!

I think one of the things they did best was not only the fact they could play both styles extremely well, but their ability to transition between styles during songs. Going from a nice soft prog melody to an insanely heavy death riff gave the most dramatic effect. Without that, they're just another prog band.
