Whoever said that (location spoilers)Alcamoth is the low point of the game is wrong because it is clearly Agniratha. Oh, wow, another place that is exactly like the two before it where you get to slog through floor after floor of endless enemies that are exactly the same as the two places before this one, except now they have cute names like "Thanks!" and "YumYum!". It's just corridors of enemies, with flying roaming enemies that always get in your fights, and maybe you'll walk around a corner on a ledge but not move the camera, and then just slip off the ledge into nothingness so all the enemies you just slogged through respawn.

It's not that the battles are too tough, because I am a higher level by 2 or 3 levels, but it feels like taking all the monsters from the Colony 9 Area and cramming them into a space maybe the size of Colony 9 itself, in the game. The place is crawling with monsters so there is no place where you aren't going to be in a battle. There are monsters throughout the corridors, and a monster at every junction, so you'll be turning a corner or coming up the stairs and oh, now you're in a monster fight and you're still loving with the camera. Plus, since they are the same monsters I have been fighting for 2 areas already, and the environment is so similar, it really feels like you are just grinding in place rather than progressing.

To be fair, that's the point in the game where you start needing to gain a gazillion levels to keep up with everything. You go from level ~50 in Sword Valley to level ~70 in Agniratha a few zones later.

Ether is to ether/magical damage (and most art-based healing) what strength is to physical damage. More ether = bigger numbers.

One tip I have on changing weather is let some time actually pass. If the weather just changed, let an in-game hour or two pass (get a drink of water or something), then start abusing the game clock. You see weather changes a lot faster by racking up days for that achievement, than you will by changing time over and over and over and over again without doing anything else.

Has anyone been able to emulate the game with Dolphin and play with 0 crashes yet?

I'm wondering if I should bother trying various recommended emulator versions until one is completely crash-free, or just keep using the one I have (which seems relatively stable, but does occasionally crash).

Purely anecdotal, but I had been using an older version for a while and it played perfectly. When I updated to the latest version, I started getting at least one crash per sitting. You know what they say, if it's not baroque...

I've been wondering about that, actually. There is no mana in the game, so what do points into Ether do? More damage/higher effect? What's the calculation for the effect?

Ether is basically the magical equivalent of Strength, it increases the effect of Ether-based arts. The formula is really simple:

Damage = (Weapon Damage + Strength or Ether) x Art Modifier

The art modifier is different for each art and increases with art rank. The spreadsheet (contains spoilers, obviously) lists that data.

So, I'm in the late game stuff, trying to get myself up to level 99, and the spreadsheet says that you can get level V xp crystals off of Fire Elementals in Makna Forest. Are these the level 96 ones next to the waypoint bonfire? Those things, while killable at my current level (88), are too tough for me to kill without them blowing up first and robbing me of my sweet sweet loot. Any tips or corrections to my tremendous error(s)?

Edit: For taking them down, I'm controlling Melia for her ether damage with AI Sharla healing my Herohom Dundun tank. Tried using Riki instead of Sharla, but the thing resists the DoTs.

I cleaned up most of the alarmingly time-sensitive quests for Alcamoth, and I finally unlocked my very first fourth skill branch. It was for Melia. I still have absolutely no idea who to talk to about the others. I wouldn't say no to a spoiler-tagged list for the other five party members (haven't got Seventh yet.)

Offhand, does anyone know where to look for Alcamoth Collection quest 2?

Also, what in the Eryth sea area drops Strong armour or whatever Colony 6 needs for reconstruction level 3? I wandered around aimlessly killing things, but I couldn't find out what specific monster drops the stuff, and I'm tired of wandering aimlessly. Along those lines, do Squall-somethings drop from monsters in the Valak Mountain area?

I've been looking for a merchant who sells Head Shot books, but haven't found one yet.

Does Melia's "Reflection" art block damage to a character? That could be really useful for some fights.

If you're referring to the item I think you are, the monster in question for the Colony 6 upgrade is the little mechs in alcoves on some of the floating reefs (I want to say reefs 1, 3, and 6). It's their common drop too, so you even get it in wooden chests.

Fourth skill branches (cribbed shamelessly from spreadsheet); two of them require town affinity, the rest don't:

Shulk:
Desiree in Colony 9: Desiree's Future
- Colony 9 at 4.5 stars of affinity (= more than just-barely-4-stars, but you don't need the full 5 stars)
- Jackson's Awakening quest completed

Reyn:
Ma'crish in Colony 6: Cook-Off Showdown
- Reached Valak Mountain
- Recruited Hoko, Pokapoka, Ma'crish, and Talonyth to Colony 6 (all should be available if you've upgraded everything to level 2)
- Cook-Off Counter Attack, Cook-Off Comeback, and Cook-Off Final Blow quests completed

Sharla:
Rasha in Frontier Village: Avenge a Mamapon's Death
- Frontier Village at 4 stars of affinity
- Reached Eryth Sea
- Secret Innovation and Disinsectization quests completed

Dunban:
Dakuku in Valak Mountain: Balance of Power
- Magma Rock obtained in Valak story progression
- Bad Timing and Chilkin Changes quests completed
- Must not suck at ice slide jumping

Riki:
Dabidabi in Frontier Village: Getting Bigger
- Reached Valak Mountain/cleared Prison Island
- Medical Advancements/Let's Make Fillings, Healing the Healer, Legendary Nopon Charm, and Mislabeling Problem quests completed

"Its a Strange World...Let's keep it that way."
I'm only 10 hours into the game (level 21), and I've got a few questions...

First, how do you effectively kill the ghost/wisp/ether monster things? The ones that the game warns you against using ether powers on. They seem to take negligible damage from anything I do to them.

Second, is there a point when I shouldn't be using Shulk exclusively as my main guy? Will that point be apparent?

Finally, if I kill a unique monster before I get the quest for said monster, am I just SOL?

Thanks, I knew that gear sounded familiar.

I'm missing out on one of Shulk's pre-req quests - I only just met that guy today. And I don't have 4 stars of affinity there, despite doing like all the drat quests. (Well, I still need to deliver soup or biscuits or something to "some guy" somewhere who's training to get better than his brother or cousin. And there's still Paolo's high-female affinity thing, but I'm making okay progress on that, too.)

And it looks like I don't meet the requirements for anyone else either.

For the ether monsters, it just takes a lot of patience, I think. I notice they definitely take much longer to kill than other monsters, but they're not invulnerable.

You can use or not use Shulk, it's your choice. I always use the appropriate-seeming story characters in main-quest boss battles.

Personally, I enjoy playing as Shulk because I like the tactical challenge playing as him requires - his positional attacks are best used if the aggro is taken away from him (and he has his own aggro-down art), and the Monado offers its own abilities that will later be very useful in tough fights.

I have also played with other characters, but Shulk's one of two or three characters I really enjoy playing.

Reyn's job is to tank the enemy hits so other, more fragile characters can lay on the damage, Sharla is primarily a healer (but later has useful offensive skills), another character is built more around auras and combining multiple skills together for an extra effect, another is a somewhat fragile blaster mage, and there's also a damage-over-time specialist with a huge HP pool.

You're not SOL. If nothing else, you can save and reload multiple times in the area to see if the monster respawns. It shouldn't vanish for good until after the quest is done - and maybe not even then.

1. You're confusing things. Ether monsters are aggroed by ether attacks. Just like monsters with an eye in their symbol attack on sight or spiders attack when they hear you, ether monsters like the wisps attack you when you use ether attacks or auras in their vicinity.
It's actually the only way to really damage them (you'll notice physical damage has those two shield icons), so definitely use ether attacks against them.

2. You can use anyone you like, and in the interest of keeping the game fresh and interesting (unless you want to miss like twenty gameplay mechanics and fighting strategies), you should switch to a different lead character once in a while or maybe take him out of the party entirely when you get more than three members. He's only really a help when fighting against Mechon.
I haven't been using him in my party in over 50 hours of gameplay, personally.

3. Unique monsters respawn eventualy. Keep saving and reloading until they reappear. Except quest exclusive monsters.

Shulk plays very similarly to a Thief in Final Fantasy XI, so I was down with using him from the get go. However, there are achievements for using other character's arts 100 times (goes very quick), and battling/questing with a group is the best way to raise affinity. Hence, Shulk will have a natural advantage if you use him all the time. Mix it up! He isn't going anywhere. (As far as I know... :tinfoil: )

In addition to the (usually) 1 to 3 stars you get for completing quests, you also get 1 star every time two NPCs have an affinity link created or updated. Do a lap of town and talk to all the named NPCs once or twice. This isn't something you should do constantly, but it's an excellent idea if you run out of quests and want to do more.

You can also save yourself some trouble in this regard by talking to any relevant or nearby NPCs while you're in the area right after completing a quest. Though every now and then there's the whole "oh, that NPC across town? I heard what you did for them, did you know we used to be married to each other?" that you wouldn't be quite so apt to stumble across in that manner.

In addition, sometimes you need the up-to-date affinity link in place to even get certain quests (e.g. I don't think you can get that prereq quest from Jackson until you know about his link with Dorothy, which involves talking to him early in the morning). So in addition to getting stars for all those affinity links, you'll also probably unlock some more quests in the process, and can thus get stars from those too.

gently caress Emmy Leater. It's now time for her Lt. Col. Test, which apparently involves beating up the other guy. I see two flash-forwards - one where she loses, one where she wins with a poison sword. The latter one seems like it might not be the most positive outcome, so I try the shield first.

I save before getting the shield, and try that, she loses pathetically immediately - And I lose affinity with the colony! The only goddamn reason I was doing her stupid quest was specifically to RAISE affinity with the colony to the insane 4.5 stars I need. Just 4 isn't enough, apparently.

I then go do the semi-annoying quest to get the sword, and save AFTER getting the sword, I hand it over, she wins... AND I LOSE AFFINITY WITH THE COLONY. gently caress you! What do you want from me, game?

I suppose I can try getting the shield as well, but I don't see how that would keep her from winning because of the poisoned sword. Because I've saved over my earlier spot, I can't un-get the sword.

I've got no other Colony 9 quests on the books except "Paolo and Narine" (and I found and finished some new ones today), so how am I supposed to get my affinity there up to 4.5 stars?

On the other side, I did like how doing all the quests and talking to people can work sometimes. There's a guy who wanted to be apprenticed to someone. From all the questing I did, I knew instantly who I needed to talk to - it was that guy who kept complaining about how busy he was and giving me quests like that. So I went there, and sure enough, it was him.

EDIT: I also talked to Desiree a bunch and holy crap, (post-Ether Mine spoilers) her father was called Xord, and vanished/died during the war. Wasn't that the name of the faced-mechon who was the Ether Mine boss? That's a neat little detail.

The important thing to learn from quests with choices is that for most of them, there's no right answer, and things either turn out well, turn out poorly, or turn out morally-gray no matter what you do.

That said, this isn't the end of the Emmy Leater line either way, though it does go in slightly different directions as a result. (I think you also have to wait until much much later in the plot to get the last few quests.)

As for raising affinity, see my previous post. It basically amounts to "talk to everyone to a. get affinity just by doing that and b. possibly unlock some more quests". If that alone doesn't seem to be enough, it's worth bearing in mind the probably-daunting fact that they won't necessarily mention another NPC at all times of day, so try switching up the time by a few hours for each NPC to get different dialogue, and don't forget to talk to them twice. (For example, while Betty is cooing over Kenny Rohan she's not apt to talk about anyone else.)

I don't know, but I think rare drops are easier to find in secret areas or ledges that take more effort to reach than stuff scattered on the ground. For example, I've ONLY ever found Yellow Cats in the secret area in the Ether Mine.

Does this game have an official strategy guide in book form? Because if I have to literally follow NPC's around all day long in the hopes that they'll say something different randomly, then, well, Shulk's not getting his fourth tree. I've only got one quest left in Colony 9 after circling around a couple times day and night.

All right, I think two days worth of collectible collecting is enough for now.

I get the odd feeling that there will be some kind of upgrade to jumping ability, because there's a special ski jump thing near Valak peak, where you have to run down a sheet of ice and jump at the end to get extra momentum. I tried repeatedly to try and reach a far ledge, and I always fall short.

I'm as far as Sword Valley, is it possible for me to find Sleet Squall Elements by now? I know they must come from some kind of wisp thing, but I don't recall anything like that. EDIF: Duh, of course: Squalls happen on the ocean.

Do enemies have notable elemental resistances? I've been assuming they do, so I've been trying not to use ice-attacks on enemies on Valak mountain, or fire attacks on enemies in the lava cave.

No it doesn't, though I'm tempted to diligently record affinity links and quest requirements on my next playthrough. My usual strategy if I'm desperately combing for all possible affinity updates is:

- Knock out any active quests first. NPCs tend to be unhelpful at providing affinity link dialogue when they're in the middle of a quest.

- Find them at wherever they are at 10:00 or 22:00. Most NPCs are standing as still as they're ever going to get at that time, though there are a few exceptions that are travelling at that time. Chat until they repeat. This is usually twice (or once, if you're in the middle of a quest with them), but occasionally when making an affinity-link there's a one-off conversation first that doesn't get repeated, so that could mean three or four chats until repeat.

- Advance time to 12:00 or 0:00. Almost all of them will still be in the same spot, though occasionally you'll have to hunt them down. Chat again to see if their dialogue's changed, and if it has, chat until they repeat.

- Advance time by 1-3 hours at a time until they disappear, then reverse time until you find the hour where they start moving. (Handy fact: if an NPC starts moving to go somewhere else, this movement always starts exactly an on hour. It may not end on an hour, but it'll certainly start on one.) Chat again: they'll likely be saying something different now, which calls for two chats.

- Go back to 10:00/22:00 and this time start reversing time until they disappear and have not yet arrived. Identify the time that's 1 hour before they arrive, go to that time, and keep an eye out for them to be strolling up to their hangout. Talk to them before they arrive, repeatedly if necessary.

... You can see how a FAQ of this sort of information could prove useful.

There are two ice slides on Valak, but for the jumps all you need is practice and maybe some movement speed increases like quick step gems. Saving the game at a good spot is faster than backtracking if you screw up.

Sleet elements don't ring a bell. Colony 6 reconstruction (all of them under special) calls for:
Level 1: Light Rain Element - Aqua Nebula in Bionis' Leg when it's raining
Level 2: Dust Element - Caris Nebula in Makna Forest
Level 3: Squall Element - Bono Nebula in Eryth Sea
Level 3: Snow Element - Reef Nebula in Valak Mountain
And two more for level 5 but their location is a bit of a spoiler for you.

And finally, I personally haven't noticed anything in regards to elemental resistance. If it exists, it doesn't seem to have a particularly significant effect. I can, for example, inflict bleed or poison on mechons, or chill on all those icy enemies in Valak, without problem.

If you are reading this, the 9/11 club is not keeping my half-french ass down enough. Also I forgot my crazy pills...AGAIN!
Just finished the game, this is probably the best RPG I've ever played. I loved the story, the characters, the game mechanics and the ending, just epic. Hopefully more games like this will come out, even though I didn't play it 'legit' I did buy it just to support the devs. Hopefully an HD version will come out in the future on another system.

Has Takahashi said anything about his Wii U project aside from the fact that it exists?

Also, whatsisface... Cockney Vega is a bigger pain in the rear end outside of his mech. But it's probably because I'm underleveled. A sign from the Bionis that I should go feed that Nopon.
