This annoys me so much when it happens. I ordered a Caldera IPA recently and it tasted like it was poured through a latex glove. I brought it back to the bar telling the waitress that something was wrong, as it tasted like latex. She replied, "You can just admit you don't like the beer".

This is one of the big problems with craft beer moving into places that don't give a poo poo. They just assume any taste faults (even when you know what an uncleaned line tastes like) are due to you only liking Bud.

A few years ago, my local/favorite beer bar added a disclaimer on the bottom of their featured draft list stating that- basically- the above beers aren't bud light, so please ask for a taste if you aren't sure because they don't refund. But this is also a place that knows their poo poo even though it's essentially a family-friendly restaurant.

The only place we have in town that has a ton of crazy craft beer stuff, but the staff also doesn't give a poo poo is Slater's 50/50 (a burger joint). They have 110 taps, but the people in charge don't seem to have a clue. I generally stick to the well-known beer bars if I'm going to go out for craft beer goodness.

See, places like that are what I want to get shaken out of the market. 110 taps? Even if they're all just sixtels, no way are you selling enough beer to keep those turning over fast enough to stay fresh.

Popped a 21st Amendment Hell or High Watermelon. Very interesting. You get watermelon right up front backed by heavy, prominent biscuity wheat, and then a melon-rind-like finish that manages to stay relatively crisp. Any other time of the year, it wouldn't go over with me, but served cold on a warm summer day or night, it's really nice. It's not overly sweet like a lot of the fruity summer offerings. Will definitely be picking up another six of it for an upcoming kayak misadventure.

Not quite beer, but last night I got to experience a one-of-a-kind --

Goose Island sent a bunch of Sophie up to a local distillery and had them distill it into a vodka-like-substance. Smelled and tasted identical to Sophie. Goose Island like it so much they bought all the barrels of it back and nobody knows what they're going to do with it, but the distillery kept a few bottles for personal use.

There's a few drips left in my sample glass:

and this badass fountain of Gin "190 proof, go ahead and stick your hand in it and try"

The barrel holds around 500 gallons, so that's a big batch of Gin...

I just got home from quite an experience at CBC. I managed to spend six hours there trying almost 30 different beers. To thank bartolimu for the suggestions, I have a few pictures: Hot dog with real gold topping http://i.imgur.com/qwe8v.jpg and mr. Floyd himself pouring a free beer for me: http://i.imgur.com/kH6q6.jpg - Stillwaters belgian ales and Mikkellers Mexican Ranger Blackberry were both the highlights of the festival, but Ryan at Fanø had some solid goon made stouts as well. Really glad I went there despite knowing no one!

Widmer Brother's Reserve Galaxy Hopped Barleywine Ale (9.5%)

Thoroughly enjoying this barleywine. Appearance is a beautiful brown-red mahogany, smells like dark fruit and brown sugar. Deep fruit (plum) and bitter hop notes at the beginning, and then goes into a lingering malt/sugar that leaves you wanting more. Finishes nice and dry. This bottle was a year old today unbekonwst to me when I bought it, and boy is this a good beer. Very much reminds me of a strong dubbel, that must be the Belgian candy sugar used. Comparable to Bigfoot, would definitely drink again.

Gets better as it warms.

Well, I'm jelly. I love the whole push now by breweries to distill their beer. Rogue may not be my favorite brewery, but their Dead Guy ale gin is really something else.

Ballast Point's spirits are made in a very traditional style though, and have essentially nothing to do with the beer side; i.e. it's not like it's a BP beer turned into a whiskey, it's something totally different. I was talking to the head brewer and it basically came down to the fact that he got all excited when he figured out he could legally do it. They have a bunch of barrels sitting around the brewery filled with a whiskey that they haven't released yet, and they put out a lot of gin and rum. They have a vodka now too. I've never had any of them because they are very expensive and they can't give you tasters of liquor at the brewery because that's way illegal. Also, I don't much care for non whiskey spirits.

Unrelated confession: I thought Three Philosophers was pretty foul. I finished it, but it wasn't necessarily easy.

It's funny, I had a Guinness the other day, it was only my second time ever drinking it. The first time was at the brewery in Dublin at the end of the tour. I didn't drink beer then and found it to be so bitter, after two sips I abandoned it and had to chew gum to get the taste out of my mouth. It may have been my first beer!

Four years later, I thought it was pretty good and I'd probably drink it again. :v:

Hit the Purple Pig in downtown Chicago last night with the lady. Food was a little disappointing considering the reputation, but the beer selection was really interesting: mostly italian brews with some smattering of US and Belgians thrown in. Tried the Verdi Imperial Stout from Birrificio Del Ducato. Brewed with chilis, I was pleasantly surprised by how subtle that flavor was at the end. First taste comes off as an similar to Stone's IRS, and then on the back end a very slight chili heat. Not sure how common this stuff is, but I'd drink again.

I tried a Stone IRS the other day... and boy, it was absolutely amazing. It was sooooo smooth for a 10.5% beer, that I didn't notice the strength of it until I was finishing my first glass.

I tend to drink beer rather slowly, and enjoy the different flavors as it gets closer to room temperature, but I was having a really hard time doing that with the Stone IRS. I drank the bottle I bought entirely too fast, and was feeling the effects of it.

I look forward to purchasing another bottle soon and enjoying it slowly, rather than drinking it like liquid candy, and getting drunk like a schoolboy.

Edit: I'd also like to acknowledge that this thread seems to have much less posting in it this week, than it did two weeks ago. Could it be because summer is here? We're all too busy drinking & having fun (or working more...) to post!

There was a Uinta takeover last night at my local. I got to talk to the rep a fair bit (we've met at other local events, and he was drunk enough to be VERY gregarious), and got to sample everything they sell kegs of to this town. Labyrinth was as good as I remember - it's one of the best barrel-aged stouts I've had. Baba is probably the best Czech-style dark lager I've had in the States, and something I'll be drinking a lot more of. Their IPAs are all decent, but don't really do much for me compared to Sculpin, which we get on draft regularly now. Cockeyed Cooper, their barleywine, is much better in bottles. The rep said they used a different barreling schedule for the keg batch, and it lost a lot of the bourbon and wood character. What's left is a kind of flabby British-style barleywine without much to recommend it. It's a shame, because I really liked Cooper in bottles.

I still stand by Buffalo Bill's Pumpkin Ale, despite all, but their Orange Blossom Cream Ale is obnoxious. I have nothing good to say about it. First off, it hit me over the head with really, really big perfume and orange drink smell, which reminded me of a bad gin cocktail, minus the gin. Didn't taste like beer either. It wasn't even that sweet, and I think a little more sweetness could have balanced it better. Just big, nasty orange peel cum soda odors and a thin finish. No cream whatsoever, either, unless you count the rapidly evaporating head.

Cross the street to avoid this one.
