There's an option in the game to auto-advance text or not. Or at least there is in Graces. Conflicting accounts make me assume it's in Vesperia as well.

I only got through that minigame by working with a friend - one of us called out the orders, while the other typed them into a notepad document. As frustrating as this part is, it's incredibly rewarding if you get the orders right, because iirc getting 100% with Raven will net you almost 300,000 gald for about ten minutes work.

Skit: Phaeroh's Words
All that stuff about the balance of the world is pretty hard to take in...
Yeah. I hadn't even been outside the capital until just a while ago myself.
And now we're here talking about the fate of the world. You never know what life'll bring you.
But isn't that what makes it interesting?
I don't think we can afford to be that relaxed anymore. Estelle doesn't have much time left.
What's the harm? It's not as if acting all serious is going to solve anything.
Besides, Estelle will notice if we look all worried.
W-well, maybe so, but...
We won't forget what Phaeroh said. Relax.
I know, it's just...
Estelle's got it the worst. If we get too down about this, we won't be much help to her.

Watch the cutscene!

Well, I suppose we can all stay at my place...
Wait. There's something I want to take care of first.
...You mean me.
Karol.
This is a guild thing. Best for us not to get involved.

And I realized... We have to figure out a few things if we're going to keep this guild going,
It sounds like you've decided what we should do.

Those who break the laws suffer strict punishment. Even if they're friends or family. They say that's the source of a guild's pride.
Yes...
So what I'm thinking is...

What do you mean?
I didn't know that Judith was fighting for our planet, all on her own. But even though I didn't know, I still failed to help a fellow guild member. So I gotta accept my punishment.
Yuri.
Me?
Maybe you were trying to "follow your own path," but you still kept things hidden from us. There's no way that can be for the good of the guild.
Well...
So you gotta be punished, too.
Now he's stretching it.
...The laws are important.

To be honest, I just don't know yet... So that's why we should all just accept our punishment, and start over from scratch. What do you think?
I can't promise I won't have my secrets in the future.
Well, if that's the way it is--if you can't trust us--then there's nothing you can do. That would be my fault.
And what if I destroy a blastia that our guild was planning on using again? That would be breaking the law that says I should act in the interest of the guild.
But you'd also be acting for the sake of the world.

Um, doesn't that sort of make your laws meaningless?
Hah hah hah. I've never heard of a guild like this before. But you've got me interested, I'll give ya that much.
Heh heh heh.
Karol, you're just full of surprises. I'd thought plenty about myself and what I should be doing... But I might not have considered how my actions would affect you guys. This is a way of settling things I didn't even realize existed.

I just wanted each of our own paths to be the same as Brave Vesperia's.
Heh, sounds all right with me. You heard the man, Judy. I guess that's where we stand.
You really are some of the oddest people I've ever met... But... I suppose I can manage to put up with you.

They're just making it up as they go, aren't they? Is that all a guild is?
Heh, the Don ran his guild just a teensy bit differently.
There's something beautiful about this way, though.
So, what about the punishment?
Oh yeah! I almost forgot. Umm...
Looks like you guys are on Krityan researcher detail. We'll be relaxing at my place.
Hey! Why do you get to decide...?

Hah hah. No ma'am.
No.
Uh-uh...

Skit: Reconciling with Judith
Karol, were you thinking by yourself this whole time about what to do with Judy?
Yeah, it was pretty much all I thought about after we left Nordopolica.
That...and about what you did to Ragou and Cumore.
Really? It's nice to hear you thought about me that much, even when I wasn't around.
Yeah... I wasn't sure at first. What was right, what was wrong... I think I have the Don to thank for setting me straight.
Without the Don's last words, I never would have found answers to the questions I had.
"You gotta stand on your own two feet."
Yeah, I was thinking about what that meant. And before I knew it, I wasn't thinking about what was right. I was thinking about what I want to do...
And that helped you decide what to do with the guild.
Yeah. So here's to fresh starts!
Yeah.
To fresh starts.

Aspio isn't very big, so finding a Krytian is pretty simple. However...

That's the name of the city that they talk about in the Krityan legends. That's all I know. Location? I don't know where it is. And even if I knew, I don't think it will be of any good to tell it to someone other than a Krityan.

To get him to talk, we simply have to switch over our leader to Judith, which is why we got an S Flag as a guaranteed drop on our last boss battle.

Good day, my sister.
Judith.
I'm Tort.
You wouldn't happen to know anything about Myorzo, would you? I'd like to go there. I need to know where Myorzo is located...and how I can get there.
Even if you reach the city, there won't be anything for you to see there. But what do you plan on doing there, anyway?
Is not a Krityan's interest in her own ancestral city reason enough to go?
That is an acceptable reason. But I'm afraid I don't know anything about where it could be.
I've heard your name before, Tort.

Will you not tell me because these humans are with me?
Our ancient law states that we cannot show anyone but our brothers and sisters the way to Myorzo.
Shouldn't it be a matter of whether they can be trusted, rather than whether they're Krityan or not? At the very least, these humans can be trusted.
...I shall ask once more. Why do you seek Myorzo?

We want to go to know what happened in the past, and how we can stop it. We want to help everyone, not just the Krityans...how's that?

I do not know if you'll find the answers to your questions, but I will show you the way. But there is one condition.
What's the condition?

The Egothor Forest? On the continent of Hypionia, isn't it? I've heard of it before...
Yes, the sacred land of the Krityans is located there. So that's where the door to Myorzo is...

They have not only invaded our sacred land, but they have also brought strange blastia with them. I don't know what they're up to, but it can't be good.
So if we go to Myorzo, we have to do something about them?
Exactly. We need you to restore peace to our sacred land.
What's happening?
Once you have driven out the interlopers, ring this bell. The door to Myorzo will open for you.

...Thank you.
May the road rise up to meet you, sister.
And you, as well...

Yeah.

Sidenote, you may have noticed that the Krytian here introduces himself and is referred to as Tort, but is listed as Toth in his name tag. This is consistent this way every time he comes up in the English 360 version, which is admittedly not a whole lot. That's a translation goof, it's supposed to be one and the same.

This conversation goes a bit differently in the PS3 version.

[...]

...Very well. I do not know if you'll find the answers to your questions, but I will show you the way. First, you will need a certain bell to act as a guidepost.
A bell?

Hypionia is... pretty big, you know?

Additionally, there is a door within the cave that only us Kritya can open.
What do you mean?
It's okay. I'll take care of it.
And after that? What do we do once we have the bell?
Just slow down. Humans are so hasty. Once you have the bell, head for Egothor Forest.

[...]

Exactly. We need you to restore peace to our sacred land.
I see. So basically we have to go to that sacred land of yours with the bell and knock some sense into that unknown group. Then if we ring the bell, the door should open, right?
That is correct.
Got it. Thank you.

[...]

Now that we know where to go next, we'll go meet up with the rest of our party at Rita's place.

I'm pretty sure it's on the west side of Hypionia, to the south of here.
So Myorzo's in that forest?
No, but a door is.
Huh? A door? What do you mean?
There's a door there that leads to Myorzo. It'd be fastest to just go and check it out.

Perhaps we should get some rest before leaving?
But...
We don't really have a choice.

[...]

Huh? A door? What do you mean?
The door that leads to Myorzo.
...He said the bell that will open the door is hidden in a cave on a beach in Hypionia where red flowers bloom.
It'd be fastest to just go and check it out.
First...let me rest...
Perhaps we should get some rest before leaving?
But...
We don't really have a choice.
In that case, I'll take a stroll through the city and see if I can't find any clues about the treasure.
Hey, you'd better rest too-- and there she goes...
Anyway, let's rest up, then look for that cave in Hyponia.

In the 360 version, we can now head straight to Egothor Forest.

In the PS3 version, however, we've got some other stuff to do first. After leaving Rita's place, we first meet up with Patty in Aspio's town square.

No. There were all sorts of books, but I found no mention of Aifread.
Of course not. This city only has books related to blastia.
Guess I have no choice. I'll travel with you all a little longer and look for clues.
Man: ...Did you just say Aifread?
Huh?

...
Man: If you're not denying it, that means it's the truth. So you're the granddaughter of that disgrace to the guilds. Huh, you're just a little brat.
...
Man: Why don't you open your mouth and say something? Don't you have any words of defense for your grandfather? Oh, I get it. With all that man did, there's nothing you CAN say.
How could you say something so cruel!?
Man: How? Well, it's the truth. And? Are you all the new members of Siren's Fang?
W-we're Brave Vesperia!
Man: Brave Vesperia? Sounds pretty shady. What kinda work do you do?
Uh, um, well...
If we tell you, will you give us a nice job of some sort?
Man: I-I don't have any work for suspicious characters that associate with Aifread like your lot. Brave Vesperia, huh? Sounds like another guild that will bring disgrace to guilds everywhere. Too many of those lately.

Man: Y- you're... Rita Mordio?!
Every time I leave town, plebs like you come out of the woodwork. Ugh, it'd be a real pain if anyone thought we were related somehow. Come on, let's go.

Man: N-no...

Now what do we do? That person's probably going to spread rumors about us.
Forget about it. Where would we be now if we let that kind of thing get to us?
Exactly. People who want to talk can talk all they want.
I...
A beach with red flowers in full blossom on Hypionia, was it?
Uh, yeah.
All right, let's go take a look.
...

After that, we need to search around for that cave. It's on a beach in southern Hypionia, and thanks to its red color pretty easy to find.

This is it! ...Right?
It looks like it matches up with what Tort said.
A beach with red flowers in full blossom on Hypionia, right?
Are you sure he wasn't just lying to you guys?
Either that, or we got the wrong place.
Wait. There's air coming out of here.
So there's a cave inside.
Move!

It opened!

What bad taste! Who'd cover up a cave like that?
Perhaps it was done so someone shady like you couldn't get in.
Ahh, are you taking shots at me, Judith?! How heartless!

What the matter, Patty?

I-it's nothing! It just looks so dark, I got scared for a second.
You're scared of the dark? You're such a child!
You're saying that?
You can wait here if you're scared.
It's okay! I'm going too.

You might be expecting a dungeon here, but nope, this cave can't be called that.

It's just a couple cutscenes.

No monsters, no boss, and just two random treasure chests with equipment for Patty:

A short way in we run into the first cutscene.

Huh? What's that?

What are all these stones doing here? There are so many of them! It's creepy...
These couldn't be... Graves?
Maybe we really did wind up in the wrong place.
Even if that is the case, there are just so many... How could this happen? Why!?

Who would've thought we'd find a place like this while looking for the gate to the city of the Kritya.
...
Something's written here.

"Here we mourn the dearly departed, and return them to the Earth."
All of these are victims of the Black Hope Incident!?

Yes, but... this is just so much...

Patty!
But... I... I can't...
Patty...

Well, you can't blame her. There's no way you could expect someone to accept this at her age.
...
I wonder who built these graves.
I don't know. Maybe a survivor?
But... This is so...

Huh? By yourself?
We can't drag Patty around in her current state, can we?
It doesn't seem like there are any monsters around. Let's go with her. Repede, stay here and watch over Patty.

Woof!

Look at those awesome shades on Repede. So good. Also have another shot a second or two before the above.

After that, we just head into the cave a bit further to arrive at a dead end and another cutscene.

It's a dead end.
Raven could be right. We might have come to the wrong spot.
But I didn't see any other beaches with red flowers.
Could you give me a moment?

"Let this deception be undone. It is I of our chosen people, whom thou has eagerly awaited."

A door?

The Kritya have an ancient power called nageeg that allows us to read information contained in objects. Using that power, I read the password that removed the spell on this rock wall.
I see. That's what Tort meant when he said it was a door only the Kritya could open.
Okay, let's head in.

Could this be the key to the door to Myorzo?
I suppose so. He said it was a bell, so this must be it.

But really, I wonder who decided to put all these graves where the bell was hidden?
It must have been a coincidence.
Maybe. The person who made the graves probably didn't know it was the bell's hiding place.
There's no way they could have known, with the way that door was hidden.
Maybe the person who blocked the entrance is the same one who made the grave site.
You think so?
Who knows? It could have simply been done as a counter measure against grave robbers. Or there could have been something that needed to be hidden, no matter what.
Tort certainly didn't say anything about the entrance. That could be it.

Either way, we got the bell. Let's head back to Patty.

It's possible.
Patty...
That's the truth she wanted to find.
Yes... But I'm sure she wasn't even remotely prepared for this.
Yeah. Let's hurry back to her.

Yep, that's the entire cave.

Good job, Repede. We got what we were after.
Woof!
Patty, can you stand? We're heading out.
...We're going already?
Will you be okay?
I'm... all right now.
Don't push yourself.

Can you walk?

Is she...?

Let's get outta here and back on track.

Now we just have to ring the bell in Egothor Forest.
Indeed.

What's up?
I was thinking, it's about time I say bye bye to all of you.

Do you really feel that way?
Why so suddenly? Do you not like traveling with us?
That's not it.
If you're just worried about troubling us over the whole Aifread thing...
I can't trouble you guys any longer. Even if it doesn't bother you guys... it bothers me.
Patty...

Why are you bringing this up now?
Rita?
Everyone is troublesome in their own way. What'll change so much if you join us?
Rita...
We're not about to hold you back if you want to leave to focus on what you really want to do, though.
I...
It'll be kinda lonely 'round here if you leave, Patty.

We've crossed the desert and fought many battles together.
Besides, you don't really need to make that decision right here and now, do you?
Also, if you left now, we wouldn't be able to operate the ship, so we'd be in a bind as well.

Why don't you think about it after you've cooled your head a bit? Then you can make whatever decision you want. Is there really any problem with coming with us until then?
...Got it.
So then, Egothor Forest is next, right?
We'll eliminate anyone suspicious, and then we just need to ring the bell.
Yes.

No, I don't know why we need someone to steer the boat when we can fly around with Ba'ul. Oh well.

Skit: Companion
...
Patty, are you all right?
Well, she's got no memory, and had no idea what her grandfather did. Seeing the truth of the matter must have been really discouraging.
*Whine*
She just looks so sad. I don't know what to say to her.
I think it's best to just leave her be.
Oh, Repede!
Woof!
Repede... What is it?
Woof!
Repede... You know...
Dogs are the best companions at times like these.
I hope she can sort out her feelings by doing so, even if just a little.

And with that, we meet back up with the 360 storyline.

Good filename. And man, that is prime avatar material if I've ever seen it.

It's kind of crazy to see just how much Patty there is though. It's kind of jarring. Not exactly fanfiction-quality just yet but it definitely has that feel of not quite fitting in with the original story.

Especially since she apparently hung out with a guy named Seifer, what is she a--BAH, beaten to it ^^^. :argh:

Note: The following is pretty technical, so if you're not incredibly interested in ToV's internal data structures just skip it.

Tales of Vesperia's game files are split into a couple archives, mostly *.svo files. The textures for things like the menu, the item icons, the font, and the area names are stored in UI.svo. We're going to take a look at those area names and how the game displays them today.

Each area name texture is stored in a texture named "TOWNMAP***.TXV", where the * are a three or four letter code for each area. For example, here's the textures in TOWNMAPCAP.TXV:

So how does the game get those on-screen, exactly? To figure that out we have to open up another archive: scenario.dat

scenario.dat contains event data, which is mostly data relating to cutscenes or non-standard NPCs (ie, ones that cause specific events or minigames or whatever to happen). scenario.dat contains 1475 (PS3 version) different, individually compressed and unnamed TSS scripts, which seems to be something Namco Tales Studio specific. I eventually found something like filenames for them in another archive (MAPLIST.DAT in map.svo), but originally I had more or less no idea which file was responsible for what -- the best thing I could do was guess based on dialogue strings in them.

At first I assumed that the data for those town images had to be in the file that contained cutscene dialogue for the scene where they show up. After randomly editing values in them and getting various effects from characters moving to different spots to the game outright crashing, I eventually figured that it had to be somewhere else.

As it turns out, the data for every single town and dungeon name image is in the very first file in scenario.dat, called "startup" by MAPLIST.DAT. I figured that out by searching for the different letter codes in the texture filenames, which lead me to a list of 0xAC sized blocks, what I call the TownMap Info table:

The important things here are the first couple bytes, the filename it reads the texture from, and the last eight, the amount of "tiles" or "letters" to process. Two 32bit integers, one for the Japanese texture and one for the English texture. Pretty much all language-specific content in Vesperia is stored in that way, with entries for two languages within the same file. (and yes, nearly all text and images from the English 360 version is still in the Japanese PS3 version, just inaccessible under normal circumstances) The rest is data like the screen coordinates to start rendering and the location and color for the background glow -- I didn't experiment too much with that since none of it is actually related to the actual letters it displays.

It took me a bit to actually find the letters, since the way it loads this whole structure is kinda convoluted:

- The TSS file header at 0x0C contains what is presumably the start pointer/offset of the "data" section of the script. This value is used later.

- The script executes and eventually reaches the following relevant section containing several pointers relative to the start of the data section:

0x156BC: Pointer to what I call the TownMap Info table. This is the structure I've already talked about above.
0x156DC and 0x15710: Pointers to what I call the TownMap Tile table. The first points at the Japanese data, while the second points at the English data. This is the data that tells the game how the individual letters/tiles are displayed.
0x156E4 and 0x15718: Pointers to what I call the TownMap Offset table. This data tells the game which of the tiles in the above table is the tile to start from.

The Offset table:

Eight bytes per entry, two integers. First integer for the Japanese data, second for the English data.
Both of these values tell the game how many tiles to skip before reading data in the Tile table.

So if you want the game to display 10 tiles starting at the 8th tile in the Tile table, you need to set the entry in this table to 7, and set the corresponding entry in the Info table to 10. As I said, kind of convoluted, ideally you'd automatically create these values so they match up and don't waste any space anywhere, but since all I needed to change was five entries I just did this manually.

The Tile table:

0x20 bytes per entry, 8 integers.
The first integer tells the game how many frames to wait before fading in the tile.
The second and third integers are the top left corner (X and Y) of the tile in texture, in pixels.
The fourth and fifth integers are the width and height of the tile, in pixels.
The sixth and seventh integers are the location where the tile actually gets drawn at on the screen. This is relative to some other values in the corresponding Info table entry.
The last four bytes seem to be unused.

By combining all these structures, the game eventually manages to display the area name when entering a new area.

As you might be able to imagine, it's rather hard to figure out how the end result of all this is going to look in-game without actually booting up the game and getting to the area in question for the first time. So I wrote myself a tool to approximate exactly that:

This was very useful for making the English images and display data for the new areas.

I dunno how interesting this is to any of you, but here you go.

Like an air pump (:v:) that's so goddamn efficient that it sucks all the air out of your apartment and leaves you to asphyxiate instead of just moving it from one place to another. I think there are a bunch of people who can create trailing images. I know some who could do this as if they were just going out for a stroll.

Last time we left off right before entering Egothor, where we're supposed to beat up a mysterious group and find the Krityan hometown, Myorzo. So let's go do that!

Watch the cutscene!

Huh, it's nicer here than I imagined. Not a bad spot at all.
Whoa, really? I thought you liked being cooped up in cold, dark labs and stuff...
...I wish I could have seen it in its original state.

But that's a hoplon blastia...
What do you mean by "mystery group?"
We weren't able to get any details... But Tort said he'd tell us how to get to Myorzo if we did something about them.
Would "doing something" include smashing that thing?
I wonder. I suppose we could if there were no complaints.
I'll fix it so there's no need for you to break it.
Oh? I'll leave it to you, then.

Skit: The Kritya
So...is Myorzo here?
I wonder.
I get the feeling it won't be easy to find.
Nobody we talked to had even heard of a town called Myorzo.
You'd expect to see more activity in this place if anybody knew there was a town here.
The difficulty of the road might be responsible for that, though.
Man... Why'd the Krityans have to go and build a town in a place like this, anyway?
Probably to avoid a lot of prying eyes.
We're just gonna have ta check it out for ourselves ta make sure, then.

I kind of hate this dungeon. You might wonder why, since on first glance, it doesn't seem too bad. It looks nice and has some calm music playing, the enemies aren't too bad, and there's lots of side paths for treasure and stuff. Soon, one of those things will change though.

On a more positive note, I equip Chain on Karol, which transforms his Punishing Smash into Twin Punishing Smash:

He spins around with his weapon in front of him a couple times before having a short recovery time.

After a pretty short walk, we reach some knights and a cutscene.

The Royal Guard... This is the Commandant's private force of elite knights.
What are the Commandant's forces doing in a forest like this with hoplon blastia?
Knight: I have no reason to answer your questions. And civilian activity is restricted by law in this area.
Hmmm, be that as it may, why are you pointing that weapon at us like that?
Knight: Bring it on!

Karol learns Gaia Bug here, where he reaches into his bag, pulls out a random item, and throws it at the enemy.

It's pretty silly.

So here's one of the reasons I hate this dungeon: Nearly every cutscene in this place, of which there are a couple, throws at least one of those knight enemy groups as you. It's pretty annoying, as it's always the exact same group of enemies.

Well, we're off to a good start.
So the mysterious group of people was the Imperial Knights...
But why did he attack us?
Maybe because they're doing something here that they don't want anyone to know about?
You mean...with that blastia?

Maybe, yeah.

Right about here, this music starts playing and plays for the rest of the dungeon. This is probably the main reason why I hate it, because it's a terribly annoying track, which just makes you want to get through this thing as fast as possible rather than explore all the side paths and areas.

...What did you just do?
Same as what she did in Heliord...! Estelle's power took the aer and made it dissipate!

I'm, I'm sorry! I just thought about how everyone was in danger, and before I knew it my power...
Her power is starting to unconsciously respond to her feelings...
That last attack came from that blastia. It was aiming straight at us.
Which means that Estelle will end up using her power every time we're shot at.

Hey hey, you saved us, didn't you?
Yeah, if that had hit us head on, we would've been goners for sure! We should be mad at the fact that they shot at us, not that Estelle protected us!
We've sworn to settle Estelle's problems along with the world's problems. Everything we're doing right now is towards that purpose. We shouldn't let the details get in our way.
But won't Phaeroh get mad if she keeps doin' stuff like this? Whether it's by a blastia or by Phaeroh, I don't wanna be barbecued alive!
Come on, this is simple. We just have to do something about that blastia, right?
That's right.
Let's pummel the jerks who are controlling that blastia!
All right, let's go. Try to keep a low profile.

Skit: Rita and Estelle

But you'd be putting yourself in danger, Rita.
We're all in danger, so relax. Or maybe you don't believe I can do it?
No no! I'm just worried about you.
Well, I'm worried about you.
Those two sure have come a long way.
Their little fights were fun, though. Oh well, I guess this way's healthier for everyone.
Yeah, I think so, too.
Hey, peanut gallery. Shut up or we'll leave you behind.
She's still got a couple rough spots to work on, though...

Moving along until we eventually reach the hoplon blastia that shot us.

Watch the cutscene & battle!

Get out of our way!

One more of the knight battles here. Exactly the same as before.

Skip past battle.

We might have stopped the Knights, but we've still got to deal with this guy.
Hmm... He's not a Hermes blastia, but the formula's been encrypted...
Care to explain in English?
Basically, without a key to decode the formula, we can't turn it off.
So I assume breaking the code isn't...
...No, it's not easy. Even if I could break it, that would take time. Hmm... Maybe if I...
I don't think this will take much time at all.

What are you doing here...?!
Perhaps he is this blastia's engineer.
Engineer: N-no! I mean, I am an engineer, and all, but I...I was just following orders. I...I swear I never wanted to get involved in something like this...

Engineer: Y-yes, of course, right away...!

Humph... Duh. I knew right away you were only trying to make me jump.
Oh...?

What is it...?

It's kinda hard to tell even in-game, but Yuri gets thrown off the cliff by the blast here.

Y-Y-Yuri...

Raven runs over to the cliff to help Yuri back up.

A-ah, right...!

Yuri...don't tell me you did that to keep me from using my power...!
Don't you think that was a bit reckless?
Indeed...do you have a death wish?
...This? This is nothing.
Yuri, I'm sorry... It was my fault...
Hey, you did the same for us before, right? Now we're even.
But...
Estelle, perhaps a simple "thank you" would do best.
I... Th-thank you.

Hey!
He's gone! That engineer got away!
Fast little bugger... We'd better catch him quick.
Wait. I'll just have to do it again. They'll find us with the hoplon blastia sooner or later if we just go tramping through the woods. And if that happens, somebody might get it in their fool head to go and play hero again.
Y-yeah...but you said it wasn't easy...
As long as the Knights aren't around, we don't have to worry so much about how long it takes.
Besides, who do you think you're dealing with? I'm the genius mage, Rita Mordio. If it's me versus a blastia, I'll win or die trying.

...Let's hope it doesn't come to that...
What are you doing?
If we leave it like this, someone could use it again. I'll just make a few adjustments. ...I'm sorry.

For somebody who's stood on death's doorstep, saying you'll do something or die trying isn't just a figure of speech.
Huh? Death's doorstep?
Didn't you say you almost died during the Great War?
Ah, forgot I mentioned that. ...Well... Only the livin' have the privilege of sayin' they'll fight ta the last breath. And words like conviction and resolve don't mean much to a dead man...
You okay, old man?
Here I am, runnin' off at the mouth. I get a bit sentimental when I start diggin' up the past. Come on. Onward!

So now we have to run back to where we met the first knights and branch off the other way to continue. Meh.

Through that cave over there we trigger another cutscene in the next area.

I'll live...
This time the old man looks a little worse for wear.
Hey old man, wanna sit this one out? We can go on ahead.
If you leave me behind, there ain't anyplace else for me to go.
Come on, even Yuri wouldn't leave you here for good. And anyway, you could always go back to Altosk, couldn't you?
Hmm. There's always that I s'pose, but they're...how do I say it...not the same as you guys.
Oh really?
Hmph...
Well, if you're okay, old man, let's get over to that blastia before it recharges and attacks us again.
Aye aye. Roger that.

And after that more of the same until we reach a save point.

To the right here is a completely optional area with a bunch more treasure as well as a giganto monster, which is way too strong for us at this point in time. So we'll leave that for later.

Continuing forward, we run straight into a new PS3 cutscene. This cutscene didn't help in making me like this dungeon more, in fact it kinda did the opposite.

That blastia is making some kind of weird noise.
It's reloading itself with aer. It won't be able to fire again for a little while.

We gotta hurry it up and slip past it. After that, the knights' hands'll be tied.
Haven't we already covered this?

They're over here, too!
We're surrounded!
We'll just have to stand our ground!

Great, another one of these. And after we win this battle...

Another one right afterwards! To be fair, this at least tries to mix it up by forcing your party to the four members that currently weren't in your active battle party, so if you don't know how to play with any of these you might be in for a rough battle.

It's still the same in terms of enemies though so it shouldn't be a big deal.

Is that all of them?
...!

Get a hold of yourself!

Maybe ya really shoulda stayed back at the ship and took it easy.
Aye... This isn't an easy fight. If I'm just in everyone's way, maybe I should--
Quit your grumbling! Now's not the time! Everyone's friends here, so don't worry about it!
Friends?
That's unusual coming from you, Rita.
Oh shut up! Come on, we've got to go stop that hoplon blastia.
I see. So that's how it is.

Patty, what're you doing? Do you want to be left behind?

I'm coming! I'm coming with all of you!

With that way too anime scene out of the way, let's head up the mountain to the second hoplon blastia.

Watch the cutscene & battle!

Knight: Those who obstruct the work of the Knights shall be treated as criminals!
Wouldn't have it any other way!

Skip past battle.

Just like I thought, this formula is protected by a code as well.
Think you can break it?
I said I'd do it or die trying, didn't I? This has nothing to do with getting us to Myorzo anymore. There's no way in hell I'll let those idiot Knights go on using these poor blastia like this.
Okay, I'll leave this to you guys!

I'm gonna keep watch down below, just in case more Royal Guards show up!
Well then, I'll come along and help out.

...It's Yuri's influence.
I guess the rest of us'll stay here for now.
...Yuri himself is as laid back as can be, though.
...True.

Time passes, signified by a few crossfades of the same scene with Yuri and Raven in different locations.

Looks like it'll be a while before she can crack that code...
Royal Guard, huh? I wonder what those guys were planning to do with the blastia anyway...

Knight: Aargh...!

And more of the same. Raven gets Azure Heavens in this battle, where he rains a bunch of arrows upon the enemy, but I forgot to get a good shot of it, probably because I wanted this dungeon to be over. Sorry.

Skip past battle.

I recommend to start watching the video now if you haven't been, there's a lot of cuts in the upcoming scene that don't translate very well to screenshots. Also, you don't want to miss the pretty good music in the scene, which is a godsend after the terrible one I had to listen to throughout the dungeon.

...It seems they're not going to let us rest.

Y-yeah... They're just waiting for us to get tired...

Estelle, fall back...!

Rita! What are you...?!
We have to destroy him...! You worry about the Knights!
Rita... But why?!
We're out of time! You can't possibly...
Rita...

Do you have no faith in me...? In us? Succeed or die trying, wasn't it?
We won't give in. Rita, do what you can and save that blastia.

...I will! I'll fix this thing if it's the last thing I do!

You joining the shining youth brigade or something?
Looks that way. But man...this guy must practice a lot.
I'm not too worried if you're still making jokes.

Stop goofing around, you guys! Fight!!

Rita!

Well, I'll be... She came through.

Why? Because the blastia stopped? I wonder what they were trying to do.
Let's not look a gift horse in the mouth. Now we've kept our promise to Tort. Judith, you take it from here.
Okay.

Ah, wh-whoa...
What is that thing...?!
The door has opened... That is Myorzo. Homeland of the Krityan people.
It's definitely...impressive.
Looks like they won't keep it open for us very long. We should hurry. Ba'ul!

Forget the city! What about that huge thing?! It looks like a living creature...
It's an Entelexeia. Though not one I've spoken to.
An Entelexeia?! How did something like that swallow an entire city?
That I don't know.

That is because Myorzo cut off contact with the outside world ages ago.
It's not gonna attack us or anything if we get closer, right?
Don't worry. As long as Ba'ul is with us, we should be allowed to enter.

And with that, we finish off Egothor Forest, for now anyway. Next time, we enter Myorzo and learn some things about this game's world!

There's a Monopenguin! :swoon:
Just a tad bit disappointed that there wasn't a section where the blastia fired at you and you had to avoid the shots. It might have spiced up the dungeon a little.

Edit: Also, glad to see that Patty has yet to let me down in bringing way too much anime to the party. She's the worst pirate ever.

I think there are a bunch of people who can create trailing images. I know some who could do this as if they were just going out for a stroll.

Last time, we were about to enter Myorzo, the hometown of the Krytia.

Watch the cutscene!

Hey, look...!

They're all Krityans...
A-are they welcoming us?

Female Krytian A: Well, well, so it was you who called on Myorzo?
Male Krytian A: And what is this? How strange. What curious ornaments you wear.
Hey, it's not polite to stare, you know.
Female Krytian B: How were such children as yourselves able to come here?

It's Ba'ul. Have you forgotten him?
Female Krytian A: Oh, you're the one who descended to the earth some years ago, right...?
Female Krytian B: ...I believe... Judith, yes Judith was your name. There was something you had to attend to, and...

Male Krytian B: Please, feel free to do as you wish.
Female Krytian B: He may be out for a walk again, though.

Okay, so they're a bit weird.
That's actually called "rude."
You're one to talk, Rita.
All Krityans are pretty much like that.
Like what?
Oh, easygoing, unafraid. We are dreamers and optimists, for better or worse.
So is the elder like that, too?
How should I put it...? He's the perfect elder for weird people.

This should be interesting...

Skit: Meeting the Kritya
The Krityans are different than I imagined...
Oh man, I totally agree.
What's so different?
You know, more like... I thought they'd be more like you, Judith.
Yeah yeah!
I'm seeing far less skin than I expected.
I mean, come on.
So that's what the two of you were looking forward to?
What're you looking at me for?!
I was talking about her personality!
Seriously, let's have some decency here.
Is it me, or are you a little disappointed too, Yuri.
It's you.
Ahh, men!

Myorzo is a fairly small town with not a whole lot of interesting things.

Right after entering we run into another cutscene.

Looks like the Krityans really were the ones who created blastia in the first place.
...Yes. Seeing all this blastia makes it very easy to believe that.
It sure would be nice if we happened upon a way to do something about your power, Miss Estelle.
Really...that would be nice, but...

Karol goes up to one of the blastia on the ground.

...It's not working.
It doesn't have a core. It's just the body.

Why would they do that?
Because that was the path we chose.

It's been a long time, Elder.
So you were the cause of all of this commotion outside! You've returned to us.
These children are humans who are travelling with me.
Hmph. This is...blastia, is it not?
Yes. It's my bodhi blastia that I use.
Hmmm. I thought that earth-dwellers had stopped using blastia like us...
Do you not use the blastia here because it uses a special formula, too?

Blastia is made by crushing apatheia, and processing those pieces with technology to produce cores, and through the absorption of aer...
Hold it! Cores are made from crushed apatheia?!
Indeed, that is what the stories say. It appears apatheia was too powerful in its original form. Even without that power, it is a stone more valuable than any precious gem. This it why its power was restrained by breaking it into pieces and carving formulas into it, and thus its numbers were also increased. Our legends tell us that cores were always produced in this way.

...A bit ironic, huh?
Yeah... The apatheia that comes from Entelexeia, who hate blastia, is necessary to make the very blastia that they hate...
Maybe Phaeroh didn't tell us about apatheia 'cause he felt uncomfortable talkin' about it...y'think?
Elder. There are many things I'd like to ask you about.
We're trying to find out what sort of role blastia played in ancient times. And if blastia ever brought disasters to this world, we'd like to know how they might have been stopped. Myorzo must still have some folklore, right? Perhaps you could tell us what you know.
Hmph. Very well.

Hey there. Where are you goin'?
I was in the middle of my daily walk. I'll return to my house before too long.
...
Apatheia, blastia, aer disturbances, Entelexeia... It looks like everything's connected.
We might see even more connections once he's told us the Krityan folklore.

The Elder's house is the large building with a differently colored roof than all the others.
Gotcha.

Before we go there, let's do the usual "new town" stuff.

There's a wonder chef in the bottom right:

There's also another warehouse to clean up near the town center.

Actually, we are...
Krytian: I heard you specialize in cleaning up warehouses... How about it? Would you lend us a hand? We will, of course pay you for your efforts.
Um... All right! Leave it to us!
Krytian: All right! Thanks a lot!

It's not very eventful and easier than the last one we did.

We get an extra 2000 Gald for getting all the items in one run.

Thank you! Brave Vesperia is at your service!

And that's about it. Let's go to the elder's house.

Watch the cutscene!

Do you think we should really just go in?
He's the one who told us to wait for him here.
I guess the Krityans really are different.
They don't seem ta be in any great rush ta get things done, that's for sure.
I know. They certainly are weird, aren't they?
Actually, you're kind of like that too, Judith.
That's funny. I don't see that at all.

W-welcome back.
I've kept you waiting. Now, please step this way if you will.

...?
This is the very means by which the lore of Myorzo is passed on.
But, um...it's just a wall.
Judith. Use the nageeg as you touch the wall, and repeat these words: ...City of dreams veiled in mist, reality's extension.
City of dreams veiled in mist, reality's extension...?

What's happening?
We Krityans possess an ancient power known as the nageeg that reveals the stories hidden in objects. These murals appear only when this power is joined with the proper incantation.
Th-this painting is kind of creepy...
"The Kritya. Stewards of wisdom, founders of the mighty Geraios, and ancient sages. Our misbegotten wisdom has sown only the seeds of ruin. The blastia we created granted us blessings, but also blighted the aer, lifeblood of this world."

You think this is showing a disturbance in the aer?
It looks more like the aer is trying to...eat the planet.
Hmm. It is said that a great mass of aer threatened to swallow the very planet whole.
"The blight grew ever stronger and brought forth a cataclysm..."

Adephagos...
"The world united to challenge the Adephagos, and banish the loathsome power which created it."
Hey, could that be the Entelexeia?
It does look a bit like monsters and humans fightin' somethin' off together.

The fact that we are all still here today is evidence enough of that.
So then is this painting showing the Adephagos being brought under control?
Hey, what's the last thing it says there.
...
Judy?

What?!
"The world's prayers... Life faded from the Children of the Full Moon..."
"Our world was preserved. But the story shall remain here for generations to tell of our sin. 240th year of Asule."
What's that supposed to mean?

Our ancestors created the blastia which led to the downfall of their entire civilization. They then chose to abandon the blastia and sever their ties with the outside world.

Estelle runs away.

Let her go.
This is all the lore of Myorzo.
Thanks. You've given us a lot to think about.
You know what's helpful? There's this magic cucumber that'll turn any dish into a gourmet meal...
I think we'll pass. Could we trouble you for a place to rest a while? I feel we may need to impose on you until our friend has calmed down.
Hmph. You are free to use the house next door. No one lives there right now.
Thank you. Okay, let's be going.

Skit: The Legend
Everything the elder said is true, isn't it?
His interpretation of the murals might not be perfect, but with all he told us...it was very convincing.
We knew this was a global problem once we talked to Phaeroh. He granted us time because he knew how we'd react when we saw this.
He probably wanted ta show us humanity ain't cut out ta handle the situation.
And to make us give up on Estelle...
...So, everything's just going according to Phaeroh's plan, then? I will NOT let that happen.
Never... I won't give up on her.

Before we leave and rest at the not-exactly inn, there's a Specific and a Treat hidden in the back of the elder's residence, which are always useful.

Going to rest gives us another cutscene, of course.

Watch the cutscene!

If that legend's true, then maybe the power of the Child of the Full Moon... ...isn't the only thing to blame for bringing up the Adephagos.
But what about the "hearing the world's prayers, life faded from the Children of the Full Moon" part?
Maybe they averted danger by killing the cause of the Adephagos, the Children of the Full Moon.
B-but, wait...

It might not be just the Hermes blastia. That legend made it sound like all blastia disturb the world's aer. Right, Rita?

I think that means the only thing that's different is how much aer each formula uses.
Even the blastia we're using?
Bodhi blastia are special, but all blastia utilize aer in a formula. They're all the same... And formulas need aer to work. The Hermes technique, the Children of the Full Moon... They're probably only part of the danger.

That's what I was worried about.
I didn't want to admit it...! Blastia couldn't be bad... The people who used them for evil were the bad ones. That's what I always believed... But...I was wrong.
So does that mean we have to stop every blastia? Like the people here in Myorzo did?

Barrier blastia, aque blastia... Bodhi blastia, too.
Yeah, you're right... I couldn't take on a really tough monster if I didn't have this.
Yeah...
I wish we could use blastia without worrying about consuming aer... But I guess that's just a dream.

What's that?
All things exist due to the sublimation, reduction, formation, and dispersion of aer. Some think that a still undiscovered theory could freely manipulate those essential mechanisms of aer. Formulating that theory is the ultimate goal of current magical research by mages around the world.
So that's the Rizomata Formula?
If it's found, manipulating aer will become so much easier. Of course, we need a formula to reconstruct aer from power that was originally converted from aer... But Estelle's power is actually directly manipulating aer. Estelle is the closest thing to the Rizomata Formula. If we can use a formula to interfere with and neutralize Estelle's power...
I don't really get it, but...

So by that logic, if we could control the excess of aer, we could prevent provoking the Adephagos.
Awesome!

Now you're really dreaming...
I will figure out this formula!

Yeah, you do that...

For a walk. All this talk about savin' the world, the ultimate goal of magical research... This conversation's a little much for ol' Raven to keep up with.

Yeah. For now, we have to find whoever is making the Hermes blastia. Otherwise it'll be too late, just like Phaeroh said.
But how are we supposed to find whoever that is?

Cores are made from apatheia, after all.
So Flynn and Nan and their friends...
Yeah.
I wonder if we'll have to...fight them...?
That's kind of up to them.

Suddenly, a big rumble from outside!

What was that?

Outside...

Something's written here... Warp blastia...?
So in other words, someone used this to leave Myorzo?
It looks that way.

What could a functional blastia be doing here?
It appears that someone's left the town.
Estelle... where's Estelle?
Wait, and where'd the old man go?
Huh? You don't think...both of them used this?
Hmm... The blastia in our town should have all lost their cores back in ancient times...
A core was probably brought in from outside the town. It should require adjustment to function properly, but Estelle's an exception to the rules. If she can interact directly with aer, she might also be able to reconstruct aer to fit the core's formula.
But why would she...
Elder, could you get everyone to help us search to see if our friends are in town?
Hmph. Very well.
Let's look for them, too.

Skit: They're Gone!
I never should have left Estelle alone. Maybe I couldn't have done anything,
but I should've stayed with her. She was so depressed...
You're not responsible for this. Beating yourself up over it won't bring her back.
I know...
And what happened to Raven?
He was acting a little strange.
Do you think they're working together?
I really doubt they'd both disappear at the same time.
But why just the two of them...?

...Don't make me start questioning your loyalties, Raven...

We can ask around town to see if anyone's seen either of them, but...

They seem to be gone.

Going back outside triggers the next cutscene.

I wonder what could've happened to them.
Anyway, let's go back to the surface and look for them!
Perhaps the two of them went on a walk?
A walk that involves leaving the town without saying anything to us? Not a chance!

Yuri thinks of something at this point. Short flashback!

And words like conviction and resolve don't mean much to a dead man...

And another!

Ah well, just when things were gettin' good.

I've got a bad feeling about this.
Hurry! We have to follow them!
I understand how you're feeling, but please try to calm down.
What! Aren't you worried?!
Of course I'm worried. That's why we should calm down and think rationally, right?
Oh, right... Yeah. I see... I'm sorry.
Got any ideas?
Ah, yes. The master of Myorzo might have some idea.
He's an Entelexeia, after all. Maybe he felt the flow of aer from the blastia.
Did you hear it? Could you tell us where it was?

It's not too clear, but a desert town...I think it's Yormgen.
That's the town in the Sands of Kogorh, where we met Duke before.
Let's head there now.

Everyone except Judith and the elder runs off towards Ba'ul.

I am.
You don't need to shoulder such a burden. Haven't you suffered enough?
Thank you, Elder. But I'm not suffering anymore.
Hmph.

For some reason, we get some Dragoon Boots from that scene. I dunno, but I'm not complaining.

Aerial Guard: Able to guard in mid-air.
Aerial Magic Guard: Able to use Magic Guard in mid-air. Stay in mid-air during the effect.
Step Away: Avoid staggering when hit during Backstep.

Now, off to Yormgen! Well, not exactly. This is a Tales game by Team Symphonia, so of course an optional scene unlocked just now back in Myorzo.

So we just head back in and rest at the empty house again, and...

Watch the cutscene!

I should be asleep too, for that matter...

Yuri gets up and follows Judith outside.

The only thing they eat is aer. Any aer that doesn't become an apatheia gets metabolized and makes them this size.
And they can live on just that?
Aer contains all the necessary ingredients for life.
Huh. That's a little trick we humans can't do.

It takes time. Many, many times the length of a human life.
So, that's why they keep to themselves, even though they're all part of the same group.
Yes. Humans knowledge can't compare to the knowledge the Entelexeia accumulate over their lives.
But even though they're smarter than humans, they don't use magic.
The Entelexeia have no need to rely on magic to defend themselves. Unlike humans.
Okay, but magic can be used for other things besides self-defense..
I guess they had no desire for power other than to protect themselves.
So they had a totally different set of values.

...And the two sides had to come together somehow to defeat the Adephagos in the past... Man, you gotta wonder how crazy that must've been.
I don't know... Ba'ul's still young. He wasn't alive during those times...
Even so, he's been around more than a hundred years already, right?
Heh, yeah... But that would only make him around 20 in human years. ...I imagine Phaeroh would know about the events of that era...
I wonder if he'd be willing to tell us about it.
We won't know until we ask. ...Shall we meet with him so you can ask in person?
We will soon enough. We haven't solved any of Estelle's issues, so he'd probably just yell at us again.
You're right...

Next time: What happened to Estelle and Raven? What's going on in Yormgen? Who's behind the plan to gather up Apatheia? Stay tuned!

Wow, I thought I knew almost everything about this game, but I never knew about the last scene between Yuri and Judith!

Yeah, same. Just makes me wonder what else I've missed :psyduck: It kind of sounds like there's at least one more scene after that one.

No one left uncured.
I got you.
This game is just full of all these little sequences that you will never see if you're not playing with a guide, because they're just... so... arbitrary...

Judith is at the center of pretty much the biggest, dumbest, most finicky one of these.

I think there are a bunch of people who can create trailing images. I know some who could do this as if they were just going out for a stroll.

You'd think so, but no. They always group related scenes together in their filenames, and that scene was in files EP_0021_010 (in the house) and EP_0021_020 (outside next to Ba'ul). The file directly after that is EP_0022_010, which is the start of the dimensional rift & memory dungeon sidequest. So unless this scene is supposed to be a hint for that somehow, that's all there is to it.

Are... are you quite sure you really want to say that?
Taco Defender
Blastia are made from crushed sentient beings...

[Tales of Symphonia] It totally is Exspheres by a different name!

How did the Krytians hear about Brave Vesperia from up in their floating village? And wait, Karol is ROBBING the warehouse and that gets him extra pay? How does that make sense?

The two party members disappearing is interesting. ... Wait - Yuri's flashbacks: is Raven really just basically [Symphonia] Zelos the double-triple-quadruple agent? That'd be kinda lame. But then again, we've also got [Symphonia] Estelle as the doomed Chosen One.

Team Symphonia isn't very original when it comes to plot points, yeah. That said, they still do a decent job at mixing their elements up so it isn't completely the same every time.

Around this point (this becomes obvious in a couple updates) you kind of start to feel that they either forgot about or had to move away for some reason (executive meddling or whatever) from their original story plan to do something more JRPG-typical, which is kinda sad, but it still remains engaging at least until the end of act 2 so I can't blame them too much.

So this page is getting kind of image-heavy, it would be good if we got to the next one before the next update. Anyone got something to discuss or share with the thread for the next five posts?

1: Rumors about box shifting are the hottest rumors, didn't you know? Also I think Krityans come and go from the city more often than you might assume, they just don't tell you about it and/or let other people there.

2: RPG mechanics in action!

Of all the directions they could have taken the Kritya, making them a bunch of slightly daffy pseudo-hippies is probably the best. I was dreading another riff on the pompous, superior Fantasy Space Elf stereotype, but instead they're all but tripping over their own feet in their eagerness to meet new people.
