Ratios and Tendency posted:I don't like fun games with great mechanics either. At this point, I've seen the reviews fall into two main camps. Those that say that it's rough around the edges, but the core gameplay is excellent and lengthy enough to balance it out (above 80%), and those which say that the core gameplay is brought down badly by UI annoyances, voicework, etc (under 70%). It all boils down to just how nitpicky the reviewer is, essentially. It's almost a mirror of the Monster Hunter reviews. Dominic White fucked around with this message at 11:07 on Jun 1, 2012 |

My favorite reviews were some of the negative ones that came out about a week before the game did that were written by people who either had no interest in RPGs to begin with, or didn't bother actually trying to learn the game and gave up 4-5 hours in. Like entire multi-page reviews complaining about the game where you honestly couldn't tell if the person even ever managed to get to Gran Soren. That's one aspect of being a game designer that I can't even imagine. I get annoyed just watching people on a stream play games poorly, it must be pretty infuriating to see someone poo poo all over a game you worked years on because they clearly couldn't grasp a basic core concept or were just too awful at it to have fun.

I haven't tried them with swords or shields, but they don't get many decent dagger skills and all their bow skills feel really weak for their high stamina cost. It seems like they're just there for their attunements, which can be put on other classes. The flexibility and Dire Gouge really make up for whatever other shortcomings they may have. For dropping the big monsters that matter, it does absolutely mind-bending damage.

As much as I like this game, they really should have hired decent ui people, or at least had a competent person in charge of that area. The menus are awful and quest tracking (well, quests in general) are handled absolutely horribly. The base game is really enjoyable but I'm constantly feeling frustrated every time I'm doing something other than running around killing monsters. If they make a truly improved sequel then we might see the next really measuring stick for arpgs in the future.

Miijhal posted:All three of the Hybrid classes are significantly better than the others. Part of it is due to some really good skills, and part of it is due to access to low-charge time elemental skills that give a good boost to damage output, although Assassins are fairly lacking in that regard. Assassin is still probably the best class for soloing the game. He can do ranged and melee effectively, which is pretty important. The only thing he can't do is magic damage, but that can be fixed by using elemental weapons. I'm still planning on maxing out Warrior and Fighter for those strength augmentations, but I'm probably going to stick with Assassin in the end. I've already got 3100 strength at night

The really annoying thing is that some reviews seem look at the wonky UI and knock 10-15% off the score, while Skyrim got a free pass. While it's good that they're being a little more objective, they could have picked a better time to do it than with a new property which will probably sell based upon the first big press push.

I started using a Tyrion pawn from some goon (Gyoru?) even though he was way high level because I wanted the little Game of Thrones dude running around with me. I didn't realise the high level meant he would also know everything about everything. Wherever we went and whatever we fought he would be chatting away being a smug little know-it-all, it was perfect. "Ogres can be distracted by a corpse or a piece of meat. Or a woman,"

Every time you get a Cyclops with two misshapen eyes, they're in the middle of a very tense dramatic story involving Cyclopean society intrigue and murder that you interrupted by randomly climbing them and stabbing them in the face. Honestly you guys have no regard for the sanctity of monster life *edit* if they drop three it's just a Cyclops serial killer and taking the eyes is his thing (I don't think they can ever drop three).

The thief runs just as fast as you, but turns faster so you can never catch up, is immune to damage, and flips out if you even try to get close. It's not possible to grab him either, you slip off. Old post, I know but if you accidentally do this if you quit to the main menu and load your game again you'll go back to the last save you had instead of that checkpoint. I did this once myself trying to get the Ur Dragon to spawn (I'd spent his entire alloted time looking at the room with the rankings slab) and it took me all the way back to the inn, wasting two hours of exploring the final dungeon. Just went back to the main menu and loaded up and I was back in the Ur Dragon arena.

Im sure anyone who has played a Mage has realized that you only have a brief window to activate Levitate when base jumping or you're going to fall to your death. However, if you jump, Levitate, and then fire off a Light Attack, you can tackle much larger drops. More entertaining than useful, but I'll be damned if I don't launch my old man-faced child-body mage off every cliff I can.

Now that I have intimate knowledge of the game mechanics and how leveling works, I'm thinking of deleting my thrice-game-completed, level 80-something save and starting over from scratch. I'll max Fighter then Warrior for their Augments and then level Assassin for the rest of my time, hopefully build a melee damage powerhouse.

I think you may be able to copy a character to the cloud and then start a new character on your internal HD as well. Or just create a new profile on your Playstation, also painless. Basically create new profile, copy your current DD character to that profile as a backup and start anew on your main profile. Rinse/repeat if you ever want to store more characters. [e]If you want to share your pawns with yourself, you'll need separate PSN accounts though as I understand it. Rascyc fucked around with this message at 17:50 on Jun 1, 2012 |

Ratios and Tendency posted:If the game is fun and engaging and memorable then the flaws don't really matter much do they? That just goes to show how pointless it is to attach a number to something subjective and why game reviews are dumb. I don't see a review as "how much fun did I have on a scale of 1-10" as much as an objective look at a game to help people decide if they are gonna buy it or not. Dragon's Dogma is really fun but I think throwing a bunch of 10's out for it because it strikes a chord with some people would be dishonest. Plus game reviews tend to consistently dole out ridiculous numbers so 7/10 looks bad when it's really not.

The inherent relativity and unreliability of review scores has always made them an inaccurate way to judge a game and it's pretty stupid that so much of the industry still reveres Metacritic ratings. Using a number to dictate the quality of something as complex as a modern game is fairly ridiculous, at least in terms of how seriously some people take those numbers.Blunt Force Trauma posted:So why does every cyclops I kill drop two misshapen eyes? Are there any magic bows that come with a base enchantment? Its not so much a concern now my main pawn has maxed sorcerer and got the final 2 augments and gone back to mage so I know she'll enchant stuff fast but it would be nice. I'm glad to finally have a mage with all the spells I want as default. High levin (only attack spell and it was that or frazil), high anodyne, high halidom, high spellscreen and holy/fire affinity. I'm hoping the cast time boost makes a big difference. Also I checked and the sorcerer 10% magic augment definitely affects all magic.

Dunno where you're getting all those clicks from. It takes exactly 1 extra click to equip it this way over being able to equip it straight from the select/back menu.
