I love Dr. Who cause it's just so much fun most of the time. Which means when it's serious/scary, it seems really really scary. The Water of Mars has a particularly terrifying moment in it, but without watching the series it won't really mean anything.

And somehow each doctor seems to be more charming than the one before. Which is astounding cause he starts off charming as all hell.

Edit: Mainly the show seems to find this perfect balance of serious and tongue in cheek/wacky.

We got some serious shit to discuss.

Doctor Who is basically if Doc Brown were younger, cooler, and smarter and just said "gently caress it, I'm bored, let's go on space adventures". Except instead of Marty McFly, he hangs out with attractive young women who are also pretty cool. It's just a fun show, there's no better word for it.

There are some definite bad episodes (Fear Her sticks out as quite possibly the worst) but I can't say I regret going through all the new Who episodes in the slightest. Very much worth watching if you haven't seen it before.

They just put on a bunch of 80s/90s series such like Jem, G.I. Joe, and motherfucking BEAST WARS!

The primitive 90s computer graphics are pretty hilarious, but it's honestly a really well-written kid's show and it actually stands up to the fond memories I have of it. I forgot what a ham Megatron's voice actor was. 'YEEEEESSS.' :3:

I'd recommend Redux, but it's a whole 50 minutes longer if that matters; this makes it nearly three and a half hours long.

The episode that ends with them finding the burnt out wreck of Earth.

There's no numbering skip, they just don't have the episode and no notation about it being dvd only.

I would definitely go with redux. You're going to need to devote an evening to it. But it's worth it.

The original is better in my mind. More focused while still deliberately paced. Redux takes too many tangents for too long a time. It becomes exhausting to watch.

If you adored the film enough to buy it I would go with Redux, as well as if you've never seen it before. But the extra scenes are all interesting but certainly not essential or really add more to the overall story so it's not like you're missing out by not seeing it.

Love and Monsters is great once you realize it's an allegory for fandom politics. A group of people united by their love for something mysterious has fun and forms a bond, but then THAT GUY shows up and ruins everything.

I enjoyed Dr. Who season 1-4 when I was watching them, but at this point I'd almost recommend just watching the Moffat episode(s) of each season and then jumping right into Season 5 because they're so much higher quality than the rest.

If you've never seen Apocalypse Now, you absolutely have to watch the original first. The people recommending Redux are mental; it's only interesting if you're already a fan and don't mind nearly an extra hour jammed into an amazing movie that severely fucks with the pacing and impact. I mean, it'll still be good, but not great.

Doctor Who is a weird show in that there really is no agreed-upon consensus at all, though, so anyone's best bet would just be to start with the Eccleston season (my personal favourite, to illustrate my point) and go from there.

Also, I've only seen the Redux version of AN, but the added scenes were definitely the ones that dragged the most, and if I could go back I'd watch the original. I might just do that now it's on streaming, actually.

Did the new series of Doctor Who ever evolve to something other than just wacky events that might feature time travel? The original shows always took him on wild adventures.

Meanwhile, I watched the first season but got pretty tired of an intergalactic traveller who never left Earth and likes dealing with the same 2 or 3 races over and over again.

Do you mean the guy before Matt Smith (David Tennant)? I'd say a tentative yes; Waters of Mars is the only one of the specials that is actually of decent quality - however bad The End of Time may be, it still does show how he regenerates into the current Doctor.

Planet of the Dead isn't on streaming, but that's all well and good since it's totally skippable and not very good.

For those who have already watched Doctor Who on Netflix, it may interest you to know that the latest Christmas Special just got put on streaming (not the good one with Michael Gambon, the crappy one they just did).

EDIT: Also, for those interested, I'm gonna be putting up our Drive rules/drink this Thursday!

Yep, very much so, the first season is super weak because they didn't have anything resembling a budget, so they couldn't afford to build a lot of sets or use a lot of special effects, so they had to make due. Season 2 on (basically once Tennant takes over) they suddenly have money and start taking the show in new directions.

Ah, gotcha. I'd say they're worth it for the most part, but the show's style definitely takes some getting used to - from the special effects to even direction and performance style, they're more akin to plays than they are single-camera shows like we'd recognize them today.

Spearhead from Space and The Ark in Space are a couple good old Who serials to try. Caves of Androzani, if that's still up.

No problem! Here are some other good ones, as I browse through the ones available on Netflix streaming:

The Aztecs
Curse of Fenric
Pyramids of Mars
The Visitation
The Pirate Planet (written by Douglas Adams!)
City of Death (this one too!)
Horror of Fang Rock

The rest are okay to horrible, depending on who you like. They also shift in style from 1960s stage play to 70s excess to super 80s cheese, so be warned.

I forget where, but I remember listening to a radio program where the writer of Species 2 was forced to include a whole bunch of things in the movie because every studio head and their brother told him what the film needed to be scary.

When Alien was rereleased in 1999 for the 20th anniversary thing, my mom took my sister and I to see it in theaters as a family movie night thing. I was 7, my sister was 11. So it's not completely unheard of.

My parents were pretty open-minded about what we kids were allowed to watch. Growing up, the Alien series were (and still are) my favorite movies. I think I saw The Thing when I was about 8 and it scared the absolute poo poo out of me.

Even so, Species was basically a softcore porn and you could tell my mom was not happy with my dad for renting it. Regardless, we all sat through it and watched it to the end anyway.
