I own a kindle keyboard, and a simple touch. Kindle has a cool ability to email your books to your reader so when you connect to wifi you can download them. Nook seems... less fragile. Big rubber backing on it. They use the same screen, cept the ST has a little IR led "field" setup to let you use it as a touch screen. That has it's good points and bad points. Good cause it's nice to tap a word and see the definition, etc. Bad cause if you get ANY dust on that bastard, good luck getting it to unlock. Both are good readers, I spent 60 on a ST and don't feel like I got ripped off or anything. I'd love to kick whoever decided there shouldn't be an option to disable locking right in the balls though.

The one single feature that makes the kindle the better choice for me is the personal documents syncing feature. I convert whatever book I have to mobi using calibre and email it to my kindle, then amazon will remember which page I read last and sync between my kindle and my android phone. Really handy for when I find myself delayed and want to bust out a chapter or two.

Most of the Amazon batteries have comments along the line of "This didn't work in my Nook," or they specify only certain model numbers and not others. That one does look like the best bet, but I don't have a lot of money to burn right now.

I read this works with the Nook app and Nook Simple Touch, provided you "close" the book each time you want it to sync on one or the other. I haven't tried it. It sounds like a bit more of a hassle, but that it does exist.

Could somebody with a graphite Kindle DX load this screenplay on it and take a photo of how it looks (skip a few pages in)? This is directly from Sony's website so it's legit. Just right click and save as. http://flash.sonypictures.com/video/movies/thesocialnetwork/awards/thesocialnetwork_screenplay.pdf

I've got a Wi-Fi Kindle 3. I have a Windows Phone. Apart from official Amazon downloads, am I able to have two copies of a file that will sync between both?

The downside to the sync feature is you need to have wifi on, which can eat up battery life. That being said, it's a small amount of battery if you don't LEAVE it on. Not sure if you can sync between your own files, but I know amazon books you buy from amazon will sync over all your readers on your account, be it touchpad, phone, kindle wifi, 3g, etc.

Does anyone have experience with the latest Sony eReader, the prs-t1? I'm specifically looking for three things; 1. Does it work with Amazon formatted eBooks? My mom isn't interested in the Kindle because it doesn't have support for the main electronic bookstores here in The Netherlands. 2. Can you do direct download from Amazon and other online retailers or do you have to pass through a desktop to install new books that don't come from the Sony Store? 3. How easy to use is the desktop-eReader interface? My parents aren't technologically gifted at the best of times and don't do well with complicated instructions. I've read a few reviews that say the Sony software pack is a buggy piece of crap, but I'd like some of your input. Thanks a lot!

Junior G-man posted:Does anyone have experience with the latest Sony eReader, the prs-t1? 1. No you can not use Amazon ebooks on it unless you break the DRM and convert the books. 2. You definitely can not use the Amazon store on it, and other stores that sell books that would work on it might not be accessible from any browser on it.

Junior G-man posted:Does anyone have experience with the latest Sony eReader, the prs-t1? 1: Nope. Only does epub and pdf files. All sony readers are like that. Only kindles work on the amazon store. 2: Nope. I think the wireless only works with the sony reader store. Some places like BN.com and other online sellers sell epubs that you can read, but there's no real storefront supported by sony other than sony. 3: They probably worked on the program for at least a weekend. Maybe even a long weekend. That being said, I love the sony reader, but I wouldn't recommend it as a first ereader to someone who isn't a technically oriented person.

I have a Nook Tablet and had a quick question about the .cbz and .cbr comic book formats. I think the Nook can read .cbz archives natively but can it do the same for .cbr? If not, is there an app that adds .cbr compatability? I could convert from one to the other but that would be a huge time-consuming effort.

Perfect View can do cbr but the problem is rar files take a bit longer to extract. I can't remember why that is. If you are interested, I wrote a python script that will take a set of cbr and convert to cbz. It just uses 7zip cmdline. I wrote it for my nook color as well.

Yep, they can get banned. Only way to really check is to add it to your account. You have to REALLY try to get it banned though. It's mostly for stolen kindles, etc.

Sporadic posted:$70 shipped Yeah at $70 I say buy it right now. If you turn out to not want it after a bit, they go for $100 usually. Only thing you'll probably notice is that it has the same screen type as the Kindle 2, original Nook, and original Kobo; which means there's fewer shades of gray than you're used to with the Pearl-model screens (in the 2nd gen DX, Kindle 3 and 4, Nook Touch/Simple Touch, new Kobos etc) and slightly slower refresh rate. Also it's 3G only and on Sprint's network, but you can still transfer things to it for free wither by USB OR buy converting your files, putting them up on web hosting you might have, and downloading them through its browser. Where with Wifi models you can do free transfer direct from Amazon over wifi with @free.kindle.com email address.

So the first two titles in the Horatio Hornblower series are not available on the Kindle - or so I thought. Turns out they're available in the UK but not the US. Now I know how it feels for non-Americans They're not available in any ebook format in the US from what I can tell.

I'm interested in the Kobo Touch; however the only store to deliver them to Finland happens to be the French FNAC. To that end I've got a few questions about "Kobo by FNAC":

Zat posted:I'm interested in the Kobo Touch; however the only store to deliver them to Finland happens to be the French FNAC. To that end I've got a few questions about "Kobo by FNAC": The Kobo Touch I got from France is pretty much a general copy with a FNAC-logo stamped on during sleep. When you start it, it'll just ask what language you want to use. And yes, it does have an English dictionary and supports ePubs you might find in the net. The FNAC part comes when you buy e-books from FNAC. AFAIK you then press sync on your Kobo Touch and those books will appear in it. That said, you can still buy e-books from within Kobo's own e-bookshop. You'll still have to navigate the French pages to get it, so Google Translate might be your friend. Oh, and if you're interested to know my opinion about the Kobo Touch: It's nice, although it does have a single gotcha with an undocumented factory reset that's activated when you press down the home-button during start-up. And considering it's a slow starter from cold, you can accidentally goof up. So save those non-Kobo ePubs just in case. Linux-support is... adequate, I guess. The Kobo is mountable and easily hackable. You still need Adobe Digital Rights to handle DRM'd e-books outside of Kobo (ie. Windows-emulation), but at least the Kobo Desktop has (unofficialish?) linux binaries.

I can send a PDF to both the Kindle and iPhone from my computer using the "Send to Kindle" app and it downloads it on both, but it doesn't seem to save the progress. edit: I tried it with a .mobi and the sync option is greyed out in the iPhone app and the Kindle says it's unable to sync to furthest read page, does it only work with ebooks bought in the Amazon store? mistermojo fucked around with this message at 04:44 on Jun 26, 2012 |
