So the other day at work we got posters for two Australian movies due out this year, have a guess which one will flop and which one won't.

I think Australians just have to accept that our movies will always look like poo poo from the advertisements. And will normally look like poo poo when you're in the cinema too.

Australian cinema is like American cinema's younger brother. Clearly looks up to them and wants to be like them, but just can't do it. ...Same goes for Australian TV, actually. Underbelly is basically the only thing we have that isn't shameful.

The Proposition had REALLY nice posters! Sure, that is just one movie but I really want to get people talking about The Proposition again. I love that movie so much.

The other problem is that it plays it horridly safe by following established demographic trends instead of attempting to create new ventures so you end up with a variation of the following:

1. Comedy - a surefire winner as they're cheap, aimed at all ages, can star whatever standup's on TV at the moment for bonus draw and all wish to be like The Castle.

2. Drama - Usually starring Gillian Anderson but from time to time Cate Blanchett or Hugo Weaving pop in to give it some "international cred". Aimed squarely at the 40+ market. Lantana is the poster child.

3. Horror/Thriller - Usually aimed at a younger audience and typically the domain of every film student graduate attracted to the Ozsploitation films of the past. Not much more than cheap scares.

And given the typical budget is $1 - 8 million all play it cheap and safe as the return is usually around $500,000 if it only stays in the country.

Oh and you forgot that every single one of them, without exception, is just as brutally Australian as they can be. Maybe it's a budget thing, but you can probably count on one hand the Australian films not set in a the suburbs, the outback, or maybe if they're really splurging a country town (that may or may not just be Adelaide or Perth). A surprising amount of them seem to be set a decade or two in the past, too. Not like, enough so that they have to go all-out to get the era right, but maybe just in the 80's or 90's.

Weirdly our made-for-TV movies actually seem to be more original. I mean sure, they're pretty much all dramatic recreations of some famous media or political event, but at least they manage to seem different.

No, you're not. I think it probably needs more crows to make it stand out more, but yeah, I think that's the intention where you see the murder of crows holding ears then pull back and see that they make up a skull.
