Now I'm nervous. Is it just a terribly lovely cliche to have an ex-military dude as a hero, or am I likely to gently caress it all up through lack of knowledge of things-military, or what?

Get a copy of the Hurt Locker screenplay, and make sure what you write is the opposite of that. EBB fucked around with this message at 23:46 on Jul 29, 2012 |

Staff Sergeant, and that's probably only if he didn't get injured before the five year mark. quote:2. What is the minimum believable level of damage for him to get a medical discharge with? It seems like higher and higher levels of disability are kept in the military; the discharge would have occurred in 2007. Loss of motor skills for a headwound would get the medical discharge process started. quote:3. What is the percentage of time he would typically spend in-theater (Afghanistan) during those five years? Depends on the unit, I doubt anyone who wasn't Special Forces would have been to Afghanistan more than twice from 2002-2007 but I'm sure I could be wrong. 40+ months in Iraq would've been possible though.

The last time I read a novel about an ex-military hero: - The protagonist AKA. Dad was too old for this poo poo, useless, but good with a rifle. - Mom was useless. - Son was useless, but was learning to shot a gun and somehow knew how to fly a plane. - Daughter was EXTREMELY useless as she was a vegetarian pacifist in a post-apocalyptic world. At the end of the novel she ends up being raped, being used as a gently caress-toy, still convinced that peace and love was the answer and very dead. On the other hand I also read a bool about an ex-air-force guy, that was a former Trekkie. He was working in an hotel during a Star Trek convention and suddenly zombies from outer space. It was actually bad rear end and funny. But its ruined by the fact that there is a scene about a hot chick in a Princess Leia costume, tied up to a bed, getting filmed and getting berated by a nerd on how much better star trek is compared to star wars. But don't worry she consented to this whole ordeal! They also imply they sell the video online to Trekkies and poo poo. Yeah...

It's not going to delve deeply into what active service is like, because I know gently caress-all about it. I just want to have enough background that it doesn't seem obviously phony to an ex-military guy.

I don't want to make him Special Forces-- too cliche-- just a high-performer. It sounds like I should give him experience in both Iraq and Afghanistan. I think a critical but not crippling motor-skills injury would fit him well. If anyone has any interest, I'd love to know classic mistakes writers make when portraying ex-military guys, so I can avoid them and not suck.

Just because I love posting it, this is what those "high-speed low-drag" folks are capable of: Not only did the driver hit a (parked, stationary) $30 million aircraft because he was getting a blowjob from the (probably not very attractive) female airman on patrol with him, but he did it traveling at such a high rate of speed that he managed to get the car lodged all the way up underneath the aircraft. Hooah Defenders, indeed.

I have a quick question. I have always wanted to join the military, but circumstances have always kept me away from it. When I officially decided I wanted to join and that I was ready to sign a contract (a few months ago), it was pretty much too late for me. I wanted to go active CG, but it was wayy too competitive. My next choice was AF, but they wouldn't accept me because of my past MJ use. Now, that out of the way, I should have a pretty good resume. Without giving up too much personal information about myself.. I am in great shape, I work for the department of defense (not a contractor) with a TS/SCI clearance, I have a police academy under my belt, I am in great physical shape, and I have a bachelors degree with >3.6 GPA. The question: Would the army, airforce or marine reserves be interested in me? And if so, would I want to go officer versus enlisted? I think I want to go the intelligence or foreign service route with my career, but I honestly can't say for sure yet. I just know that before I got my clearance, none of the military branches I talked to seemed interested in me because of my MJ use. I hope someone can give some insight into that.. but its been well over three years at this point.

CheerGrrl92 posted:Great. That doesn't answer my question, which is a "quick" one. It depends...seriously, the only way you are going to get a no kidding answer to this is to actually go talk to a recruiter and start working through the process. Since you have a steady (I assume) well paying job, with DoD no less, you really need to hold out for an officer slot, even if that means waiting a while and reapplying a couple of times, particularly since your GPA and clearance mean you should be fairly competitive. Remember that if you are looking at going into the Reserves (or Guard, for that matter) things are a little different...you have to meet the basic requirements for OTS/OCS/etc, but you also have to find a unit willing to hire you. If you are serious about wanting to go the Guard/Reserves route, start talking to units that you think you would be interested in working for and see what they have to offer as far as vacancies.
